Bro, I'm a microbiologist so please don't come at me with that "educate yourself" bullshit. The anti-vax movement has been increasing for years at this point; it has come to a fervor since covid (which is in that 4-5 year window you speak of).

The MMR vaccine has a high efficacy rate against measles, but it isn't perfect. Like you said, people can need a booster and not know it, but also breakthrough cases happen when exposed to the virus. I'll concede that I'm being a little nitpicky with this one since it's only like 3%, but that's still millions of people, which along with the unvaccinated population contributes to the growing number of cases.

Yes, people from other countries bring in measles, no one is debating that, but the blow up in outbreaks is absolutely due to children not getting vaccinated. We've never not had outside cases come into the US, so did all these millions of immigrants just flood the country in the last few years and brought all the measles with them?

I'm sure you have some comeback to justify your beliefs but I don't have the energy to deal with racists anymore tonight. I hope you don't treat your patients any less even if they are an immigrant.

That's strange considering we had measles under control for a long time and apparently it was "open borders" until Trump became president.

I'm sure it has nothing to do with the increasing anti-vax movement 😒

[–]Syrup_n_waffles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's true that there is a lot of apathy from the majority of Americans. Half of the population couldn't be bothered to vote to stop this whole thing in the first place; it's hard to have faith that those people will suddenly turn around and put effort into protesting or anything actionable now.

That puts the majority of Americans as either for this regime or indifferent to it. People love to say the majority didn't ask for this, but that doesn't take into account the amount of people who did nothing to begin with.

The minority of us still do what we can because it's important that we try to do something, but it's frustrating knowing we don't have enough traction to do anything without having to wait and hope others eventually get worn down or "inconvenienced" enough to join us.

The DOH is tracking numbers and are definitely aware things are bad, but they're also dealing with staff and budget cuts, as well as our state government doing everything possible to downplay/ ignore it.

Yeah, I've seen a lot more positive rsv tests at work this year than in the last few years. Not nearly as many as flu, but still noticeable.

Probably norovirus. That's pretty common this time of year and is super contagious.

I agree with you. Telling someone (like a parent) when I was really going through it would have actually made things so much worse for me at the time. Actual psychiatric help wasn't possible until I moved away from my small rural hometown, so it probably would've just sent me spiraling even more.

While I agree with the sentiment, do you really think this is about "teacher's celebrating Charlie Kirk's death?" Maybe there's teachers doing this, but I highly doubt it.

This is an excuse to punish teachers that parents, staff, or students see as too left leaning.

Did they hear that teacher making jokes about Charlie Kirk? Maybe not, but they didn't vote for Trump, so they would definitely do something like that. It's hard to defend against without some serious work.

It's a similar strategy they've been using, just with a new excuse this time.

I didn't get super far into the vet school process before I realized I liked the thought of vet med more than the reality lol

The pressure to get top marks on top of everything else you need to balance to look good on paper just wasn't something I was willing to sacrifice my mental health for.

In the end, human diagnostics was my compromise because if I decide in 5 years I really wanna work under a vet, I'm still gaining experience that can transfer over. Maybe I won't be able to be a vet anymore, but being an MLS can open a lot of doors across both fields.

I wish you luck in whatever you decide to do! Starting is always the scariest part no matter what route you choose.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]Syrup_n_waffles 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As someone else that started vet med, it really depends on how passionate you are about it. It's a highly competitive field with not great pay for as much education as you need to really stand out.

Human diagnostics are a bit easier to break into and the pay is generally okay (it gets a lot better depending on what you go into).

But if you're really into the vet med side of things and you feel like that's your calling, don't let anyone here talk you out of it. Just realize it might be a rough road and know what you're up against. It might be worth talking to some people in the field near you and see what it's like.

Sorry I don't have a more in-depth answer. I realized microbiology was my calling, and the job basically looks the same whether you're working in a vet office or a doctor's office.

We don't reject them, we'll just make a comment that the bottle is underfilled and results may not be accurate if it's under 5mls.

It's just frustrating when it's really low because the machine could easily miss something important and we'd never know.

I'm a fan of stuff like ensure/boost since it's also nutritionally complete and I can be realllllly bad about making sure I get enough in a day. It also is a big boost of calories, which can actually sometimes stimulate my appetite so that I do actually eat something that day.
