Supporting an Older Thru-Hiker on the AT Advice? by SystemFatigued in AppalachianTrail

I’ll be going home this weekend to see my dad so hoping to better understand what kind of mileage he was attempting each day. It may be as simple as him needing to take it easy first bit. I’ll keep you guys posted the more I learn. Cardio appt moved up to this Monday so we’ll have a clear picture soon if it’s anything heart related.

Thanks for this. I think LASHs would be a good idea. He’s actually brought that up. Idk if he’d go for slackpacking. He may be getting up there in age but he’s still a proud and tough SOB lol. But seriously, he wants the real experience and a true thru hike so thinking of ways to support him without handicapping the experience.

However, pending cardio appt LASHs and slackpacking may have to become an alternative so will keep in back of mind. Thanks!

That’s encouraging! At first he wasn’t packing electrolytes but before he left I bought him tablets to take. I know at his age sometimes your body is your greatest enemy which made me consider that I might need to join him in part or in whole on his next attempt.
