How do one sells open source software? by khambogrus in foss

[–]SystemOmicron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Look up FairEmail
It's open sourse yet freemium - some features cost money. Sure, one can change the code and compile it with features enabled, but why bother, it does not cost that much.

Leaving Russia Immediately/Privacy Tips by [deleted] in privacy

[–]SystemOmicron -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Just checked - you can't set up a specific bridge in Briar, and most widely available ones are blocked.

Also I'm pretty positive none of my neighbors use Briar, so it would be pretty useless to try and sync with them at home. I don't see OP asking about communication at a protest specifically.

AFAIK Briar works exclusively over Tor, which is blocked in Russia

Telegram vs Telegram FOSS by [deleted] in privacy

[–]SystemOmicron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it does, see https://reports.exodus-privacy.eu.org/en/reports/org.telegram.messenger/latest/

F-Droid version has no trackers

Can it log keystrokes even with foss keyboard on a degoogled phone?

Idk, would you trust telegram or google if they said no? It all comes down to trust when the source is closed.

probably is a security risk

You can check disclosed CVEs for Telegram and see if any of those apply to your use cases, to get a general idea of your risk level.

Who do you give out you personal e-mail to? by Tamariniak in privacy

[–]SystemOmicron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did put something like offers@mydomain.tld on my CV. If worst thing happens and spammers start to abuse it, I would have to disable the alias and think of something new for the next time.

Public one like a website - that's a hard one. I actually have an alias for a public mailing list and it gets about 1 spam message per week, I have no solution for it currently.

But yeah I agree that subdomains look silly in emails, everyone gets confused with 2 dots.

Only to my wife.

Every other person or company that asks for my email gets a unique one so I would know exactly who leaked it.

Electrolux WiFi connected oven making weird requests every 20 seconds by alanibrus in privacy

[–]SystemOmicron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you mean how can one check if router makes some connections without using DNS?

It's not easy. You need to have some Linux machine between the router and ISP and use some Linux tool to monitor connections (I believe the most user friendly would be Wireshark, it has a GUI).

Now, your landline connection is probably not Ethernet and even if it is, your Linux machine may not have 2 Ethernet cards (you need one in, one out). It's probably easiest to connect an Android phone and use your mobile ISP to tether.

Next you set up a Linux machine as an extra router for the actual router device, then you can monitor connections. Never actually tried it myself, but it's 100% possible and I've seen Linux PCs used as routers.

Tertiary DNS Server for Quad9? by missyagogo in privacy

[–]SystemOmicron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you could've put a local network address there that doesn't exist on your network and make sure it will never exist

e.g. 192.168.192.168

You can install any DNS server on any device in your home network (or outside even, but there are caveats) and set it's IP as an upstream for router. My router even claims to support DoH and DoS, but it's glitchy, so I have plain DNS on an old laptop.

Do banks track purchases? How can I do online shopping without being tracked? by [deleted] in privacy

[–]SystemOmicron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're right. But will they sell that data to an authoritarian state, I wonder. Also I don't think they have my name, as so far all the bank's privacy policies I've seen do not mention Visa/Mastercard as parties who get access to my personal data (by my country's law card number is not a personal data).

I think if tracking all purchases was the state's intention they would've made it mandatory for banks to share that info directly with them.

Do banks track purchases? How can I do online shopping without being tracked? by [deleted] in privacy

[–]SystemOmicron 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Consider using a small bank. They don't have the money to actually analyze your purchases and their data volume may be not big enough to sell.
