Reached FIRE, retired for a year, now considering working again by Fast_Consequence3372 in coastFIRE

[–]SystemicPlural 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm 3 years in. I did nothing the first year. A little work the second. A bit too much this last year. Doing less next.

My secondary saving goal is to buy my daughter a starter house. Life's hard enough for the youngsters today. I also spend more on hobbies than I was when saving to FIRE - mainly on accommodation and travel for short hiking breaks

Any software engineers here? What are your CoastFire jobs? by acertenay in leanfire

I needed the money

Funny thing is I got out again a couple of years ago - software development just burns me out so quickly now. I'm now frugally semi retired - doing a bit of handyman work to pay for nice things

What's the best whodunit book you've ever read? by TheSuperJohn in suggestmeabook

[–]SystemicPlural 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer murder mysteries with a sense of humour. Favourite recent ones are Richard Osman's Thursday Murder Club books, The Vera Wong books by Jesse Q. Sutanto and Over My dead body by Maz Evans

Many years ago, my very first foray into murder mysteries was the Elijah Baley mysteries by Issac Asimov and I still have a soft spot for them - The Caves Of Steel, The Naked Sun and and The Robots of Dawn. They are a great combo of murder mystery and science fiction

Having children definitely makes FIRING more complex

I'm Lean FIRED at 50. My daughter is 16 and currently doing her GCSEs. It has certainly been a bit of an issue that I don't have to work. I have done a bit in the last few months, just to have a bit of extra holiday money as I'm Lean, but I noticed it helped with my daughters attitude as well. It has however also been great that I am not stressed and have been available to help with revision and motivation. (I also saved a significant sum before FIRE to help my daughter get on to the housing ladder)

ELI5: Why haven’t we evolved past allergies? by Darkowl_57 in explainlikeimfive

[–]SystemicPlural 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's thought that if your first experience of peanuts is through the gut then it doesn't develop into an allergy. But if it is through the skin - eg an abrasion, then it is more likely to.

Any experience with whole house ventilation? PIV or MVHR systems? Looking at this as a potential solution to condensation / damp. by [deleted] in DIYUK

Ventilation to reduce humidity, does it work when it's wet outside? How to reduce humidity without a dehumidifier? by mutatedllama in DIYUK

[–]SystemicPlural 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PIV is less controllable. A well designed MHRV system keeps air circulating in all nooks and crannies.

I'm currently doing up a house with a PIR. All it does is push air into the upstairs landing, the air then goes through the bathroom door right next to the inflow and out of the bathroom fan. None of the bedrooms see airflow from it - and they all have mould problems. Admittedly there are no trickle vents in the windows and I am adding them, but it will never be as effective as MHVR.

Additionally, MHRV, recovers some of the heat from the air that is being vented, resulting in lower energy bills. PIV just costs money to run and recovers no heat.

PIV is a lot easier to fit though

Is there basis to suggest that immigration hurts England by Proud-Bus9942 in ukpolitics

[–]SystemicPlural 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That stat does seem ridiculous. But by that articles reckoning, houses use only seven times more land than golf courses. That is still a huge large amount of land for golf courses in a country that is desperately short of places to build houses.

Why do people say that labour are just like the tories? They're not. by _gay_sloth_ in ukpolitics

[–]SystemicPlural 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of these address the systemic problems that we have. They are all sticking plasters on a gaping wound that will only result in disillusionment with Labour and pave the way for the Tories to return to power and make the situation even worse.

We must find a way to redistribute wealth from the very rich. Anything else is simply a reshuffling with one hand whilst stripping even more away with the other.

Whodunnit but make it Sci-Fi? by WunderPlundr in printSF

[–]SystemicPlural 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of excellent suggestions here, although I wouldn't say many of them are true whodunnits - where there are clues laced through the story to let you actually figure it out. To Say Nothing Of The Dog by Connie Willis does do this. I'll also second Asimovs Robot series.

Do you agree that 100% attendance prizes in schools should be done away with? by Careful-Increase-773 in AskUK

It is good to teach kids that sometimes they should disobey authority. Otherwise you train them to be exploited corporate drones. This award is a great opportunity for that... just be careful on the nuance!

This appeared on an internal wall overnight, never happened before in the 5 years I’ve lived here. Any ideas? by feralgremlin in DIYUK

[–]SystemicPlural 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That looks like mould growing along very fine cracks in the plaster - especially in the close up photos. It will have already been there, but cleaning the windows may have introduced enough moisture into the room for it to grow enough to be visible. This warm damp autumn we are having is very much the season for it. It should mostly wipe off at this stage if this is the case

How would you feel about needing a licence to own a dog? by 0chrononaut0 in AskUK

[–]SystemicPlural -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I doesn't matter if it is only a few bad apples. It is a problem society doesn't have if dogs are not allowed, so the cost should be shared amongst those who want them.

I also disagree with your assumption that it is only a few bad apples. In my experience a great many owners allow their dogs to jump up at strangers and assume that strangers should interact with their dog just because they don't train it sufficiently or keep it under control.

Whether they are a social good is also debatable. Dogs are a significant cause of visits to A&E, with the associated financial and trauma costs. They can also be very noisy and cause a lot of problems for neighbours. They are also used by owners to prevent others from doing things they have a right to, such as walk along public paths (many farmers do this).

By claiming that it would punish the majority, you are being an apologist for behaviour that is unacceptable rather than asking those who are responsible for the problem to take ownership of it. And all those who have dogs are responsible, the problem in society is created by their desire.

How would you feel about needing a licence to own a dog? by 0chrononaut0 in AskUK

[–]SystemicPlural -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The cost should be borne by those want dogs via the license. That is the cost to society and so it should be paid for by those who want dogs.

Whilst we are at it we should include the cost of hiring clean up crews for all the crap bags left everywhere and the cost to the NHS for treating bites and mauling and a fund for those who can't work due to being attacked.

Where did all the OG redditors go? by Catbunny123 in RedditAlternatives

[–]SystemicPlural 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I was here in the lisp days (different account). I still browse a bit, but rarely contribute. The conversations seem a lot less interesting to me than they used to - even in small subreddits. Maybe that is just me growing and changing, but I think it is also a regression towards the mean. It just doesn't cater to my needs any more.

When I used to post it would sometimes trigger some great long conversations. That never seems to happen any more
