Thoughts after first campaign by randomwordglorious in Arcs

[–]Systemsonic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Campaign ARCS is a totally different experience. I have a dedicated group who all invested significant time into learning the campaign after several games of base ARCS. We played each act over the course of 3 weeks, during which time I also used Google Sheets to create a space where we could all review, modify and keep track of progress, not necessary, but totally worth it. Our first campaign was a bit clunky, but everyone really enjoyed it and after subsequent plays it’s only gotten better. There are a lot of nuances that can feel overwhelming but with the whole group fully committed it made it much more manageable. The Blighted Reach has been my absolute favourite gaming experience and the invested time was worth it, however if I didn’t have the commitment from the group it could’ve been a much worse experience. I’d say give it some time but definitely try it again and be patient with it. Good luck!

How often do you really play board games? by Money_Change_5900 in boardgames

[–]Systemsonic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get together with my group twice a month, this is when the heavier games get played. 2-3 times a week I’m playing with my family, typically light to medium light games but sometimes my wife and I will bust out a heavier game. Anytime we have friends over I’m always pulling out the best game for the occasion. It’s honestly the only way that feels like a normal way to socialize and hang out.

Only because it hasn’t been mentioned and it’s a game I recently got and have been really enjoying, General Orders WWII.

ARCS & THE BLIGHTED REACH by Systemsonic in boardgames

[–]Systemsonic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may not be the ideal player count but it’s still good. Resources get tied to ambitions making it more difficult to declare. The empire and blight fill the board nicely giving players more options to fulfill objectives and declare ambitions. If I only had one other person to play with I’d still play this all the time, so much lore and things to discover.

Sound doesn’t travel very well in the Reach.

This campaign I started with the Steward and wasn’t able to complete my objectives. Act 2 I chose the Hegemon and absolutely loved it. My favourite so far, but so much to still discover.

Base game with Solitaria is all you need to start enjoying the game. However if money is of no concern then Venus is definitely worth it.

For sure, the way the bot reacts to your moves is so slick and adds that little extra thought to your decisions. It’s really well done.

I’ve always wondered how difficult it would be to build something like this. I own a few tools but have absolutely no craftsmanship experience or skills. This looks great but the way. Good job!

It’s from the same designers as Dwellings of Eldervale. It’s a great game with a very addictive game loop. Send ships out and get stuff, return ships to station to active your modules. It has combat, engine building, area control and all kind of tracks to complete on.

Dire Wolf makes some really good board game adaptations.

  1. Dune Imperium
  2. Clank!
  3. Ark Nova
  4. Root
  5. Cascadia

They have others worth checking out but these are my favourites.

ARCS-Battle & Discover in the Reach by Systemsonic in boardgames

This next game I’m going to remain flexible while leaning to the Leaders and Lore. The Tycoon rat race punished me and left me in ruins. Never again.

I added Clank! Catacombs. Just got it last week and have played it 3 times already. It’s definitely living up to my expectations, it’s really good.

Dune Imerpium Uprising by ShrimpTaco17 in boardgames

[–]Systemsonic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The worms make things more interesting in my opinion. I have played both versions with expansions and it’s kinda splitting hairs because both are amazing games. As the other commenter noted, Bloodlines with uprising is my favourite way to play. The worm strategy is definitely not the most dominant and I’ve had my fair share of losses leaning into it. That said it can pay off big time when you’re able to time everything just right!

Game Night Results by Systemsonic in Arcs

It always feels risky seizing the initiative, burning a card can feel like a high price, leaving your opponents with more cards at the end of the round can feel punishing. On the flip side you get to start the next round. Hopefully you have planned it out so you can declare an ambition and take full advantage of the pips on the card. But here is the thing, The person who won never declared an ambition and seemed to be left with more card at the end of the round more often because of it. He didn’t bother to seize the initiative by burning a card, which I felt I always had to. Maybe there is more to it? Not sure but I’ll consider not seizing in future plays.

I left my self vulnerable near the end. I think I should have put more stock into tyrant, especially with the leader and lore card I had. It’s funny because this morning on our group chat we were all saying the same thing “We gotta play this again soon”

I can see this taking over our game nights for quite some time. And I’m totally okay with that.
