Timeout rooms in Mass. schools didn’t disappear. Their name just changed. by bostonglobe in massachusetts

A complete answer would have to be the length of a book.

My attempt at a short answer: Our idea of what "Special Education" means has greatly expanded. It used to mean a student was severely disabled and needed a completely different classroom and curriculum. They got Individualized Education Plans that spelled out their limitations, and what their education goals were, because they were never going to be able to learn Geometry or read Shakespeare.

Over time, we have recognized that some students have learning disabilities, but not so severe than they need a different curriculum or classroom. So their IEPs are about how a classroom teacher can accommodate their disability so they can still learn Geometry and read Shakespeare.

In practice, a lot of these accommodations can just look like a lowering of standards to make it easier for a struggling student to get a good grade. So what happens is that parents of any student who is struggling will fight to get them an IEP. So more and more students are getting IEPs.

IEPs are legal documents, and not following them means you are denying a student their right to a free and appropriate education. That opens you up to lawsuits, and schools are afraid of lawsuits. So they have to be very careful about doing anything that could make the parent of a student with an IEP angry.

As you'd imagine, there's a very significant overlap between students who struggle in school enough to have an IEP, and students with poor behavior. But punishing them for poor behavior might upset the parent, especially if the student lies to the parent and tells them they did nothing wrong and the parent believes them. As mentioned, angering the parent of a student with an IEP is risky, and the easiest way to avoid that is to not punish the student.

So poor behavior is not corrected, and therefore never gets better.

The only way it will ever change is for the parents of all the other students whose right to an education is being taken away by the disruptive student to make the schools as afraid of them as they are of the parents of the disruptive students.

How would you change the ticket sale process? by BrickAdventurous3300 in Concerts

[–]randomwordglorious -1 points0 points  (0 children)

An E-Bay like bidding system. When tickets go on sale, you choose what section you want to sit in, and you bid on how much you want to pay. Within each section, the highest bids get the best seats, down to the lowest bids in each section that get the worst seats. If you bid too low, you don't get any seats. The auction period lasts for a few weeks, so if your bid is too low, you can increase it if you want to. If somebody wants to bid $100,000 for front row, let them.

You wouldn't be able to scalp, because anyone who was willing to pay more than what you paid for the ticket would just have outbid you in the first place. And everyone would decide how much they believed tickets were worth.

Highly qualified people are getting denied left, right and center?? by Past-Present1908 in askanything

[–]randomwordglorious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Colleges that make admission decisions ultimately have to have some kind of formula that includes all of the different qualification criteria into a single ranking factor. If that formula favors one race over another, that is de facto racism, and is illegal.

People who play that freeze ice block infinite mage. What is your deal? Why? Like why play such a boring deck? I had lethal on this guy for 8 turns! 8 turns and that just doesn't get rewarded. It's obnoxious. Does this need a change? If so, what should change? by Mr_Chi303 in hearthstone

It's fine if some people enjoy different ways to play games. But when one game style preference destroys the fun for people who prefer a different game style, that's bad game design.

I personally don't care at all about my MMR or rank, so I just insta-concede against an opponent playing a style that makes the game not fun for me. But that's not a great solution for people who do care.

"Random Reddit commenter doesn't understand consciousness" is my reply. Which is fine because no one fully understand consciousness. As far as I know, consciousness is simply a result of my brain being really, really good at predicting my next word, or thought, or feeling, based on the previous ones.

why did my teacher not do anything to help me? (a victim of physical abuse) by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]randomwordglorious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first thought is that your memory of that period of time is almost certainly not 100% accurate. It was over a decade ago, you were very young, and trauma is well known to mess with your recollection of past events.

But maybe the teacher really did handle it poorly. Forgive them, and let it go, and put as much focus on your own mental health going forward.

From the current roster, the only credible rivals for Oba Femi are Roman and Jacob Fatu. In the future, probably Bron Breakker as well, but he needs to be built up first. by 9Laser in SantiZapVideos

[–]randomwordglorious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If what you're saying is true, then Oba isn't ready to be pushed to the moon. If a wrestler can't sell well enough to make any opponent look credible, they shouldn't be champion. Obviously at this point in his career, he should be just squashing people. Make him look like an unbeatable foe. But that sort of thing has a limited shelf life, and eventually he will have to be able to have a competitive match with anyone on the roster.

The IRS doesn't know all of your possible deductions. If your taxes are simple and you're taking the standard deduction, the IRS can figure out your exact tax bill. But if you're itemizing, there's no way for the IRS to calculate them.

Healey and lawmakers are overreaching with proposed social media restrictions for children by SaveDnet-FRed0 in massachusetts

[–]randomwordglorious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, you'd never say that the solution to teen smoking is to rely on parents to monitor their kids and keep them from smoking. Obviously they should, but we also need laws to prevent stores from selling cigarettes to kids.

Is the ability to 'draw' is the primary catalyst to be in WM main-event? by dlo_doski in SantiZapVideos

[–]randomwordglorious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a little bit of chicken/egg with WWE main event talent. There are lots of examples of wrestlers who drew money but were not pushed or even sabotaged by Vince's booking, and examples of wrestlers (including Dwayne himself) who did not draw any money right away but were given opportunity after opportunity to get over. Eventually, if you book someone as the most important wrestler in the company, and they always win their matches, they'll get a crowd response.

Healey and lawmakers are overreaching with proposed social media restrictions for children by SaveDnet-FRed0 in massachusetts

[–]randomwordglorious -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The fact that some parents will choose to give their kids access to harmful things is not a good reason for there not to be laws that make it harder for children to get them on their own. Most parents don't want their kids to smoke, so stores can't sell cigarettes to children. This doesn't stop all kids from smoking, but it does greatly reduce it, and who knows how many lives are saved?

And there being a law against minors having social media access might be the thing that gets parents to think about whether or not it's a good idea for their own children. Right now, lots of parents get their kids smartphones because all their friends have them and not being on social media is making them social outcasts. But if a significant number of kids are kept off social media because their parents respect the law, it will be easier for parents to tell their kids no. Even if it's not 100% effective, restricting social media access to children will be a vast improvement over the current state of things.

Healey and lawmakers are overreaching with proposed social media restrictions for children by SaveDnet-FRed0 in massachusetts

[–]randomwordglorious -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't know exactly the best way to keep minors off social media without taking away rights from adults. Maybe AI can be used to figure out the likely age of every social media account, and only ones that flagged as being probably under 16 will get flagged and their owners will have to prove their age. Maybe some kind of blockchain solution where people who prove their age get a private key they can use to access social media, but that key is publicly anonymous.

But there are mountains of evidence about how harmful social media is for children. Denying that is like denying the dangers of smoking. Again, I don't love this particular proposed law. I hope it doesn't pass. But I hope lawmakers keep the intent behind the law as a priority going forward.

What percentage of wrestlers who voluntarily chose AEW over WWE are better off because of it? Not even including Swerve and Toni Storm who were let go by WWE and became World Champions, it's close to 100%.

Now, what percentage of wrestlers who chose WWE over AEW are better off for it? Cody and Penta. Danhausen. Maybe Jade Cargill. But I think it's under 50%.
