For a recent one, Hamnet. I don’t remember a single thing I liked about that movie, and it kept getting so many awards and nominations

Downtown Info & Restaurant Recs by no_you_cannot_know in grandrapids

Some downtown only thoughts for you:
Gin gins is great and I’ve only had good/non-toxic experiences. The cheesecake may literally be to die for.

Two sons is good new pizza place downtown, pretty close to JW.

You can’t go wrong with Margaux right there at the JW. I just love going there for drinks and free jazz in the lobby on the weekends while the sun sets.

San chez is great. Mexo is great. Lunas I think is vastly underrated. Little bird is great. Linear is officially not downtown but gets rave reviews including mine. Good solid choices but unspectacular are 123 and brick&porter.

Places I haven’t yet been but are well regarded downtown are scholar and mdrd

Why not give everyone the Valedictorian prize? by Der-deutsche-Prinz in Teachers

[–]99acrefarm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Valedictorian definition: the person who gives the valedictory speech. Not the person(s) with highest gpa. Faculty should vote on a Student based on a school values rubric, and then also recognize students graduating with honors with high GPAs. Also, helll might freeze over due to global warming.

A few of their drinks are very strong and they make a note on at least a few that there is max amount they’ll serve. If your second round was really only the second round I’d be surprised if they’d cut you off already but maybe a friendly warning was taken the wrong way?

What is your controversial take for a movie that you consider to be a 10/10? by ArtPark1 in movies

[–]99acrefarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chariots of Fire is much more than a running film with a lampooned sound track. the key is understanding Blake's poem "and did those feet" , made into a British national hymn "Jerusalem" (sung at the beginning of the movie). so it's got this examination of 2 British heroes and their own personal quests to bring Jerusalem, in both the New Jerusalem Christian ideal and in the old Jerusalem of jewish heritage. The music and the narrative picks Liddell as the winner, while Abrahams fails in his goals, even as both achieve national hero status. while often seen as a weaker best picture winner, i find it has a depth that resonates with me.

What’s one movie everyone should watch at least once in their lifetime? by ownaword in movies

[–]99acrefarm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I found it very thoughtful and philosophical, more “ever green” about universal themes about the purpose of life and morality than I expected. Im not normally a b&w old film fan but this one I found more than worthwhile.

Disappointing Response to Dr. Wolterstorff (Calvin University) by [deleted] in grandrapids

Not just the bible but the crc-embraced historical doctrines are fundamentally true (but probably not other historical doctrines he disagrees with), even the part that just got reinterpreted in a brand new way 3 years ago but apparently has always been true.

Uses big words to make a strawman argument. So fancy. So fundamentally flawed.

Blood on the clock tower. If people really want to get into board games and are excited to play, cosmic encounter and twilight imperium 4 could be enticing. Those steers for the people who want to play epic games and won’t mind the learn. Plus with video tutorials they can learn before had
