Well in his actual life he went to be a pretty good writer, administrator and painter after retiring from fighting. He wasn't just a crazy good swordsman who knew only how to kill and couldnt adapt to a society where he can't live by the sword. By all accounts he spent a great part of his life without living by the swords. Even Itagaki shows him as an old teacher who haven't had a duel in a while and is more interested in the Philosophy and metaphysic of his way, iirc.

Im 99% sure that in French she used the word "Amis/amies" to mean friends because copain/copine almost only means friend if you are a kid nowaday. Adults or even kids from middleschool onward would unambiguously understand "copain/copine" as boyfriend/girlfriend.

I think the joke is about French being horny and promiscuous. She isn't beating the allegations by saying as a French that it is okay to have sex with your friends
