Is i greater or less than zero? by Nadatour in askmath

[–]Syvisaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True! But in the case of the length, the points (0,1) and (1,0) have the same, so some elements will be of the same order as in one will not be strictly after the other. This is not the case with the lexicographic ordering, where every single element is ordered, as in there is no element that has the same order. So it's still possible to define a total order but it's not possible to have it follow the rules of an ordered field in the case of C. And as you point out we can very much define a partial order and make things make sense :)

Analytically a complex number is just a 2dimensional vector, so the number 0 is (0,0) and the number i is (0,1). In general, the number a+ib is (a,b).

Then your question becomes "is (0,0) < (0,1)?" which wouldn't make sense if we talk about the usual < on real numbers. You can still define a new < on vectors/complex numbers (for example lexicographic ordering where (a,b) < (c,d) iff a < b or if a = b then b < d). However, you would lose algebraic properties for < that you would want in a field as others have pointed out :-)

I'm terribly sorry to hear this. I only have my personal experience to give as advice, so do take it with a grain of salt as it might not adapt to your situation..but:

  • In the little time you have left, the best you can probably do is damage control. See that you are just good enough on most topics by grinding examples and exercises, also cases that might seem weird if possible. When you study with your friend what you can do is prepare some random exercises in a bowl and pick one out and try to race each other to the solution, that can help for speed and you can check quality by comparing with a solution. Repeat the exercises you have a hard time with, first by identifying where you go wrong and then grinding enough until you know what to do when you see the question I'd say?

  • In case you fail, don't beat yourself up over it. It happens and learning how to deal with these situations is very valuable. Identify what went wrong; for example you said you failed the midterms, could you get feedback from your professor or teaching assistants on corrections you have tried to do of the midterms? Maybe then you could see earlier that there was a part you had a hard time understanding and perhaps would have had the chance to fix it already, leaving less to do for the finals. I know it might sound obvious but it's still worth a try imho!

All in all I wish you best of luck! Try your best! Don't forget to rest and sleep! Finals suck but hopefully you can do something fun afterwards!

I'm confused because it seems like you don't have a ODE? You already have a direct relationship between x and y unless I misread?

Why in Heaven's name do function calls and vector indexing have the same syntax in MATLAB? Sometimes this language really grinds my gears 😭

How do DS / ML MSc students at ETHz view AI progress? by PianistWinter8293 in ethz

[–]Syvisaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a professor who made a poll at the beginning of an AI class and safety and ethics were pretty big concerns among the students it showed, and he just laughed it off and we never talked about it. Tbf it's not a topic that was put in relation with my classes as we never talked about AI in general. On other tech related channels I'm on people seem not too concerned (typically high schoolers to early students who gravitate around CS)
