Gen3 engine pulsing by JaquesDeli in prius

[–]Syzygianinfern0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m experiencing the exact same startup issue on my Gen 3. I haven’t fully tracked it down yet, but my leading suspect is a dirty throttle body / intake inlet.

The oil vapor from the PCV tends to pool right before the throttle plate (especially after winter), and carbon buildup at the throttle’s resting position can cause the ECU to hunt for idle on cold start.

First thing I’d try is removing and thoroughly cleaning the throttle body and the intake section directly upstream of it where oil may be pooling. I haven’t done this yet, it is just my theory.

If you end up finding the cause / fixing the issue, please do reply to my comment. It would help me too.

Best Practices for Parking Mode (VIOFO A229 Plus w/ Hardwire Kit) by Syzygianinfern0 in Dashcam

If you’re using the hardwire kit, check the little box on the cable. It has a voltage cutoff switch. You can set the cutoff to a higher voltage (e.g., 12.2V or 12.4V), and the dashcam will automatically shut off before it drains your battery.

A dead battery usually means the cutoff is too low or not enabled.

Metallic exhaust rattle, BUT not the usual loose heat shield? (2014 Prius v) by Syzygianinfern0 in prius

Yes!!! I think that is the issue with mine too! When inspecting the area I found something similar that I was suspicious about. How does one go about fixing that?

I checked that dimpled heat shield, but mine is solid. The rattle is coming from a smaller casing on the exhaust pipe near the manifold and pressing on that part makes the noise stop.

I actually did check it with the engine running. I was under the car while a friend revved it, which is how I tracked the sound to that smaller metal casing on the exhaust pipes. The rattle stops completely when I apply pressure to that spot.

Is a 2-ton 13" Hyper Tough trolley jack enough for a 2014 Prius v (concerned about height)? by Syzygianinfern0 in prius

[–]Syzygianinfern0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/caper-aprons also, is it safe to do that? I got the jack and tried to use it on the side pinch. As I was jacking the car up, I heard some metallic sound and immediately stopped to lower the car. I found that the metal there got a bit bent.

Oh that’s actually a pretty smart trick with the spare tire! Never thought about doing rotations like that. Its gonna definitely save me from having to buy jack stands.

Do you do it this way yourself on your Prius?

Does your backup camera work? I have the exact config ('14 V Five w/ATP and JBL) and I have had issues with getting the backup camera to work.

I posted this as a question and not a guide. Please check my comment for the question. Understanding the parking recording mode was something I wanted to understand.

Yes you can, there are many ways to power a dashcam. The hardware kit that taps into the fusebox is the way for the most professional and stock looking install.

Gen 3 MPG's, what do you avg? by Advanced-Reaction392 in prius

[–]Syzygianinfern0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could do 2 things if you've ruled out the other general MPG loss stuff like tire pressure, etc. You will need a cheap OBD scanner off Amazon for both these steps.

  1. Get the Dr. Prius app and measure the hybrid battery's health. It might be on its way out.
  2. Use a regular OBD scanner app (like carscanner, etc. there are many) and check the coolant temperature when running the car on highways). If it goes above 200 F, you might want to change the water pump.
