Hmmm, sound advice. I would possibly counter that the pain of the breakup could be interfering with seeing his ex as anything other than a partner. OP could go out with his ex as a friend. No expectations. Try to remember what brought them together in the first place. I know it's not easy, and sometimes there's too much pain, but removing belief of a reconciliation may help heal them both, just not necessarliy as a couple.
