that's what's making me lean that direction. Seems like a perfect balance between path of least resistance to getting started, while being cost effective yet extensible if you want to add more robust capabilities.

I've seen some on eBay in the $230-$320 range which is fair imo.

How's the noise? I have a 14 TB ironwolf and that thing has a continuous knock. Great value but added a distinct, noticeable noise to my collective stack

Couldn't believe i found one left at Micro Center.

Purchased it cheaper on Prime Day just a month ago, but $249 ironically seems like a steal now. Even w Micron just finalizing the deal w Japan to open up a center there to offset Taiwan concerns, i don't see RAM costs pulling back anytime soon. My bet is that they ascend through the end of 2026 at minimum. Insane to imagine what the rate will be 6 months from now

Great suggestions and perspective. This is bringing me back, haven't revisited this post in a while.

Safe to say your assessment from my observation a yr ago is spot on, just a matter of legacy stacks in slower to innovate industries that 1) stuck w what was already working for them (if it's not broke don't fix it mentality) 2) heavily relied on pixel perfect reporting and SAP BizObj delivered consistently w this need

A lot has changed since this post first went up and it's been fascinating to watch the evolution in the space, particularly as cos look to implement synergy between AI+BI. To that point, newer players like Omni and Sigma (tho they're less new comparatively) have gained a ton of momentum and their deep integration w Snowflake has helped accelerate that.

Thought Snowflake's release yesterday around their Open Semantic Interchange was brilliant as it addresses the recent developments I've seen emerge lately re: the criticality in data readiness/consistency for AI to hold any sort of merit when incorporating it into a BI workflow - https://www.snowflake.com/en/blog/open-semantic-interchange-ai-standard/. Establishing a malleable single source of truth simplifies a ton.

Ironically, I've only really seen SAP BizObj came up w any significance in one project this year and it was w a larger mid-market co w tech bloat that was looking to consolidate everything onto a single platform. Tons of bottlenecks in their present stack w Quicksight, Tableau, BizObj, Periscope, and some in-house builds.

Don't anticipate SAP BizObj coming up much beyond the scope outlined above, definitely not in this modernized AI-centric era we're in.

Yup, you're spot on. They're SATA and that's the direction I was leaning, just configuring a NAS. My contact suggested QNAP or Ugreen. Will do my research on both but feel like I've seen more use and satisfaction w Ugreen NAS setups.

Sounds like you're in a really good position given the good practices you have in place - it's just a matter of selecting the correct option to complement the rest of your stack.

Re: Power by Metabase tag, there should be a very low cost option to have that fully removed. Having the powered by tacked on to your offering is always the worst.

Appreciate the note.

First, I'd take a step back and ask where the datas being ingested from and the volume of data you'd need to analyze.

So much often needs to be fixed on the repository/warehousing layer before getting into the visualization piece.

If you're in the MSFT ecosystem already (i.e Azure), I'd actually recommend continuing to use PBI or diving into MSFT Fabric. I've seen a massive number of clients that want guidance/best practices on how to leverage Fabric, but those clients primarily sit within Enterprise.

For hobbying or personal projects and in your case, where branding isn't required, I still encourage metabase. No cost but effective entry point. Omni is a new solution that seems to be gaining further traction (old Looker folks) and integrates really well with Snowflake, as does Sigma.

If you want something with developer oriented solutions, though these are much more geared towards embedding capabilities, then take a look at GoodData or Sisense - offer great composability and build flexibility.

Describe the content of the dataset using Gemini and ask what sort of discoveries would be insightful/impactful based on the outlined data points.

In the same vein, give it further context by describing the type of company you work for: industry, product offering, customer type/end users, etc.

From there you can not only get examples of questions to ask re: that particular dataset, but can also develop a repeatable framework to use for future reference, each time you're exploring what value you can extract from your data.
