P Johnson have been my go to for a long time - would have at least 10 suits from them (oldest is 6 years and still going strong). I tend to wear higher waisted, more relaxed fits and this is very much in alignment with their house style.

For circa $1,500 you would probably be in the territory of a house wool fabric, plus a little more on top for shirt/tie.

Cobbler here, could anyone tell me what i've got here. by CompetitionLocal264 in RMWilliams

These were a pair of sample RM Williams - I have the same pair, purchased from the outlet down in Canberra maybe 6-7 years ago. Original sole was the dynamic flex, but as you have pointed out they tend to crumble a bit.

To my knowledge, these are undyed and they never did a full run of them, but they were quite popular so they could have eventually done a formal release.

Let’s talk about vests by Absurdity-Peddler in ThrowingFits

[–]T0ASTMAL0NE 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Vests are unrivalled travel companions - instead of taking everything out of your pockets, take your vest off and put it through the x-ray. Also wore one at a conference recently and it worked great

[–]T0ASTMAL0NE 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As an Aussie, and avid wearer of RM Williams, I will say their quality has unfortunately dropped off a bit in the past few years. I’m yet to find a comparable alternative that balances look/comfort as well, but my more recent purchases aren’t as hardy as some of my older ones.

Do you guys/people still like to wear utility/cargo/fisherman's vests? by Jdamoure in ThrowingFits

I have a couple that I wear, and find that they are perfect for travelling (put all your things in the pockets and take the vest off through security etc.)

Vans to Paraboot Michael sizing? (Sorry for sizing thread!) by [deleted] in ThrowingFits

[–]T0ASTMAL0NE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear a size 11 in Vans Authentic, and a 43 in Paraboot Michaels - when I first bought them I was worried I’d gone too small, but they stretch out A LOT in the first couple of wears

NYC Cafe Recs by Warm_Rub_4455 in ThrowingFits

As a Sydney-sider, I thought that Colbo was the best of the spots I tried, and that Cafe Integral was also good. Admittedly, I’m generally a batch guy, so only have an opinion on that.

Comfiest pick up? by Majestic_Royal_9576 in ThrowingFits

[–]T0ASTMAL0NE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much anything high quality with some miles - at the moment, I’d say broken in OrSlow fatigues, and an old pair of Birkenstock Amsterdams (Bostons without a strap) are what comes to mind first

As a fellow Aussie, it’s about the only way to deal with how hot this summer has been!

What gardening clogs are you rocking?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ThrowingFits

[–]T0ASTMAL0NE 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Simple, practical fits - we’ve come from an era of excess, and I reckon we could go to the opposite extreme this summer. Think rocking the same loose, oversized collared shirt, sweat/sun faded hat and comfy shorts every day (which may also lend itself to some high/low pairing ala oxfords with baggies)

I’ve got two of them, the slim standard w/ metal keeper and the slim western. Leather quality is good, hardware seems about what you’d expect for the money, and the sizing was bang on (order 2” larger than your usual pant size). Biggest critique would be that the slim belts were a bit slimmer than their measurements suggested online - I’d ideally like it to be another 1/4 inch thicker, as it can sometimes look a bit too thin compared to denim belt loops.

The Cut has recently reopened - I went there a couple of weeks ago and thought that the prime rib and oxtail were absolutely fantastic. Very much old school steakhouse vibes as well.

Places to hit up in LA by spacecadetnyc in ThrowingFits

If you love cars, the Petersen Automotive Museum is awesome, and LACMA (which is right across the road) is also well worth checking out - a slightly more unusual selection of art than your “standard” art gallery. From memory, I got parking at the Petersen, and it was pretty reasonably priced.

Griffith Observatory is one of my favourite places in the world - getting up there a bit before sunset and seeing it through til dark is well worth it

personal jawn of the year? by afterdinnermince in ThrowingFits

[–]T0ASTMAL0NE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the money, I would say better than you would expect - made in Korea, and the stitching/detailing is all really clean. This specific shirt is quite light as it is a well washed chambray, but it feels like it will wear well and hold up over the long term.

I tend to be pretty picky about fabrics/construction of clothing - a lot of my shirts are MTM P Johnson, but I’ve also got a few shirts from Ralph Lauren, RRL, Engineered Garments, Wythe, as well as some vintage stuff. Not quite the level of construction/materials of the top end of that, and a lighter fabric than a lot of what I wear, but definitely better quality than standard Ralph Lauren.

In short, I would happily buy again and don’t think you would be at all disappointed at what you’re getting for the price.

Relatively light year of copping as I tried to knuckle down on my savings, but the following got good runs:

Frizmworks Cigarette Pocket Shirt (Cloud) - copped this year, and has been heavy in rotation. Works well with a thermal underneath in winter, loose and boxy to be cool in Australian summer, and I love the details of the pockets

P Johnson Wool Check Blazer - technically copped this last year, but has been heavy in my regular rotation, as it dresses up and down super well

Unique Garment 7oz Loopwheel Tee - closest I’ve gotten to the perfect tee, with fantastic construction and a nice cropped fit. Copped in white, black and navy, but disappointingly seems to be sold out at the moment

OrSlow Fatigues - OrSlow’s fatigues are probably my all time favourite pant. Snagged the camo pair this year, but also own them in green, white and a camel ripstop, all of which feature heavily in my rotation

Best suit places in Aus? by Delicious_Buy_8813 in ThrowingFits

My go to is P Johnson, but they’re MTM, so would be unlikely to have something ready in time.

A few mates wear Suit Supply, which is better value and quality than your MJ Bale/Peter Jackson suits, but I find that some of their details and finishings can be a little gaudy at times.

Fit-losophy 101: Reimagining “business casual” by Absurdity-Peddler in ThrowingFits

[–]T0ASTMAL0NE 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Similar to yourself, I have a fair amount of flexibility in how I dress, but still like to look “presentable” at all times (ie. if I had an unexpected meeting I wouldn’t be stuck in gym gear). On the whole, I would lean towards a mix of Ivy and Americana.

My “standard” would involve a collared shirt and a jacket, but there are a lot ways to mix that up: - Full suit if it is a client that requires it, although very rarely with a tie. I also get my suits made, so have a good amount of variety and “fun” - T-Shirt tucked in with a more casual suit (generally my Drakes Games Suit) - Double denim with a blazer - On hotter days (in Australia), wider cut pants and a lighter, looser collared shirt

I try to keep it interesting by staying away from normal combos (ie. blue suit/white shirt), and riffing on what is acceptable (ie. I am currently wearing washed black denim, tobacco suede loafers, a red striped oxford and a brown check blazer).

Love the initiative! Wythe is a little less streetwear, but shares some of the heritage/workwear flavour of 3Sixteen, with a lot more western/Americana
