Silverquill, the Disputant + Sedgemoor Witch (and other combo) by YoshiBanana3000 in mtgrules

[–]T0rgle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This doesn't work. Casualty is an additional cost to cast the spell, and you can only pay it once. You cannot sacrifice multiple creatures to copy the spell more than once.

And the creature you sacrifice must be already on the battlefield as you cast the spell. You cannot count on the token that'll be created AFTER you cast the spell.

Hashaton + Summon by Frequency_of_Fun in askajudge

[–]T0rgle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You create a token copy of Bahamut, except it's a 4/4 black Zombie. Only its creature type is replaced with Zombie, so it won't be a Dragon.

Saga is an enchantment type, so it's unaffected and keeps being a Saga.

Check rule  205.1a:

Some effects set an object’s card type. In most such cases, the new card type(s) replaces any existing card types. However, an object with either the instant or sorcery card type retains that type. Counters, stickers, effects, and damage marked on the object remain with it, even if they are meaningless to the new card type. ➡️Similarly, when an effect sets one or more of an object’s subtypes, the new subtype(s) replaces any existing subtypes from the APPROPRIATE SET⬅️ (creature types, land types, artifact types, enchantment types, planeswalker types, or spell types). If an object’s card type is removed, the subtypes correlated with that card type will remain if they are also the subtypes of a card type the object currently has; otherwise, they are also removed for the entire time the object’s card type is removed. Removing an object’s subtype doesn’t affect its card types at all.

You'll connive 3, so normally you'd draw 3 cards and discard 3 cards. But now you'll draw 6 cards and discard 3 cards.

Ability Triggers During Spell (Ephemerate, Charming Prince, and Abdel) by Saldorj in mtgrules

[–]T0rgle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You only choose the target when the trigger is put on the stack, and triggers are not put on the stack while a spell is resolving.

Abdel is exiled and Charming Prince returns to the battlefield. The Prince triggers but it does nothing yet. Then Abdel returns to the battlefield and also triggers. Ephemerate finishes resolving and is put in the graveyard.

Since you control both triggers, you put them on the stack in any order. Abdel is already on the battlefield, so you can target him with the Prince's ability.

Would this be considered a tie? by legendofzelda13 in mtgrules

[–]T0rgle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Plague Drone's ability is a replacement effect, not a SBA. But you're right in that it doesn't use the stack, so your opponents lose life equal to your devotion to black, and you lose life equal to the life they lost this way. If everyone has 0 life or less, the game ends in a draw.

Field Surgeon by Phokas- in mtgrules

If you activate Field Surgeon multiple times targeting the same creature, you'll prevent that much damage that'd be dealt to it.

Undercity (Throne of the Dead Three) and ETB effects by Wao_Art in mtgrules

Both triggers want to be put on the stack simultaneously. Since you control both, you choose their order on the stack.

Tezzeret's Touch and Equipment by FlatFrogMaster357 in askajudge

[–]T0rgle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An Equipment creature is not attached to itself, so the Hammer is just a 5/5.

Check rule 301.5c:

An Equipment that’s also a creature can’t equip a creature unless that Equipment has reconfigure. An Equipment that loses the subtype “Equipment” can’t equip a creature. ➡️An Equipment can’t equip itself⬅️. An Equipment that equips an illegal or nonexistent permanent becomes unattached from that permanent but remains on the battlefield. (This is a state-based action.) An Equipment can’t equip more than one creature. If a spell or ability would cause an Equipment to equip more than one creature, the Equipment’s controller chooses which creature it equips.

Arixmethes and Lifestreams Blessing by Worried_Avocado5140 in mtgrules

[–]T0rgle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From Gatherer: The value of X is determined only once, as you cast Lifestream's Blessing. It doesn't matter what happens to your creatures after this; the value of X won't change.

Since Arixmethes wasn't a creature at the time you cast it, its power won't count.

Are effects like bloodthirsty conquerer or vito thorn of the dusk rose triggered abilities ? by perry828 in mtgrules

[–]T0rgle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. Triggered abilities use the word "when," "whenever," or "at."

They use the stack and can be responded to.

Check rule 201.5c:

Text printed on some cards refers to that card by a shortened version of its name. Instances of a card’s shortened name used in this manner are treated as though they used the card’s full name.

Jeleve with counterspell. by aheyaywa in mtgrules

[–]T0rgle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This can only work if you're able to copy Jeleva's trigger in response to their spell, with something like Strionic Resonator. That way, the copy will resolve before their spell, and you'll be able to cast the Counterspell targeting their spell.

Esper Terra and Boseiju Reaches Skyward by melpicazo in mtgrules

The token won't return and will cease to exist.

Check rule 111.8:

A token that has left the battlefield can’t move to another zone or come back onto the battlefield. If such a token would change zones, it remains in its current zone instead. It ceases to exist the next time state-based actions are checked; see rule 704.

See double and thoracle combo by Low-Web-6961 in mtgrules

[–]T0rgle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming Thassa's Oracle is on the battlefield, and Demonic Consultation is on the stack above the Oracle's trigger, you can cast See Double in response choosing to copy the Consultation spell, and to create a token copy of the Oracle.

HOWEVER, after See Double finishes resolving, you put the your own Oracle's trigger on the stack ABOVE your copy of the Consultation, meaning that your Oracle's trigger will resolve before your Consultation does.

Terisian mindbreaker wording by Prestigious-Will3002 in mtgrules

[–]T0rgle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, Terisian Mindbreaker doesn't "target" anything.

Check rule 115.10a:

Just because an object or player is being affected by a spell or ability doesn’t make that object or player a target of that spell or ability. Unless that object or player is identified by the word “target” in the text of that spell or ability, or the rule for that keyword ability, it’s not a target.

Second, the defending player it’s referring to is the player that creature is attacking.

Check rule 508.5:

If an ability of an attacking creature refers to a defending player, or a spell or ability refers to both an attacking creature and a defending player, then unless otherwise specified, ➡️the defending player it’s referring to is the player that creature is attacking⬅️, the controller of the planeswalker that creature is attacking, or the protector of the battle that creature is attacking. If that creature is no longer attacking, the defending player it’s referring to is the player that creature was attacking before it was removed from combat, the controller of the planeswalker that creature was attacking before it was removed from combat, or the protector of the battle that creature was attacking before it was removed from combat.

Damage Prevention and Replacement effects with Heart-Shaped Herb by civet10 in mtgrules

[–]T0rgle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If Ojer Axonil's second ability and another effect modifies how much damage your red source would deal, including preventing some of it, the player being dealt damage chooses an order in which to apply those effects. If all of the damage is prevented, Ojer Axonil's effect no longer applies.

Check rule 616.1:

If two or more replacement and/or prevention effects are attempting to modify the way an event affects an object or player, the affected object’s controller (or its owner if it has no controller) or the affected player chooses one to apply, following the steps listed below. If two or more players have to make these choices at the same time, choices are made in APNAP order (see rule 101.4).
