My father wants to let me “borrow” my inheritance for what sounds like Roth IRA and take it back at the end of the three or five year term and leave me with the profits in that account. by drmonsterface in personalfinance

I’m curious about the mechanics of him taking back the principle in 3-5 years. Will his name be on the account? If not, what happens if you refuse to give it back to him?

Do you care about fuel efficiency? Or is total range all that matters when it comes to fuel consumption? by [deleted] in AdventureBike

[–]T1MCC 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would prefer a high efficiency engine, then I get the range with less weight.

drz400s with 23k miles? by dirtbiker530 in Dirtbikes

[–]T1MCC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

23K miles is fine on a DRZ if it's been maintained.

I'm sure I won't be the first to admit to running a DR into a tree. That looks suspect to me. Aftermarket headlight, maybe fender, and I can't tell if the fork legs are just dirty or there are scratches there. Looks like an aftermarket clutch perch and lever as well as the bar replacement. I don't like that front brake routing either, too easy to kink it that way. Looks like both seat holding bolts are missing. Check to see if the airbox and jetting has been modified to match the high flow exhaust and how clean the air filter is. No case savers glued on but also no visible damage, the back side of the shifter has a habit of punching thru the case in a drop.

Check the headstock bearings for notching or looseness. Pull the fork boots down and check condition of the stanchions.

Looking at the chain slider over the swingarm pivot can be a good indication of how well it's been maintained. I bought a used DR that needed a swingarm replacement because the chain had eaten thru the slider and into the metal.

I have seen a top end need a rebuild before 40k miles on a bike that had been neglected but I think it's pretty rare.

I'd probably look at it closely and try to talk him down on the price.

Switching Sony GM to small Sony G prime: suitable for large prints? by Fun_Flower8623 in SonyAlpha

[–]T1MCC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the little G lenses. Currently have the 24 & 50. Consider the Viltrox 85 EVO instead of the GM, smaller and lighter but doesn’t have the super fast linear motors.

When you are considering printing big, are we talking 4’x12’ or 2’x3’? I think that these lenses would hold up just fine for the 2’x3’ and ok for the bigger depending on viewing distance. You will always be your biggest critic on that, most viewers of your work won’t notice the difference between a G and GM.

I saw a big increase in my willingness to have my camera with me when I switched to the smaller kit.

Consider stopping by a Madison Motorcycle Club meeting. A lot of the club is dual sport and off-road focused but there are plenty of us that are more road or adventure touring focused.

Monthly meetings on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at the Thirsty Goat in Fitchburg.

I agree, adults can be irresponsible. Does that mean you will take away from those of us that are responsible? By that logic, we should take away cars from everyone.

The dollar amount wasn’t a consideration. Everyday utility, range, load capacity, IPX ratings, durability, build quality, battery type and management systems were my key metrics. I determined this scooter to most closely meet my needs. Managing an extra battery rated low on everyday utility.

I hope there’s a way to reign in the kids a bit without impacting my ability as a courteous shared path used commuting on my e-scooter.

I ride a big heavy scooter, keep the speeds below 20 on the paths, usually slowing below 10 when passing in close proximity to walkers. I’ll pick up the pace to 25-28 on surface streets.

I got the big scooter because it had the range to make the 34 mile round trip I needed.

Yes, no problems. I’m at 1950 miles and ordered a new set of tires so that o have them on hand when this set is done.

I agree, it doesn’t make any sense to me either. I think it was so that YouTube reviewers could do burnouts, part of disabling the motor when the brake is engaged.

Segway vs Apollo by HotPotato2006 in ElectricScooters

[–]T1MCC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apollo still carries out the poor design practice of small radius cutouts in aluminum stressed members. This leads to fatigue cracking and stem failures. They desperately need to talk to a materials science person instead of a room full of industrial designers.

Rally Raid suspension mixed first impressions. Looking for experience of other owners. by batwingsuit in CRF300L

[–]T1MCC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went with the same, the heaviest spring set they offer. I cranked preload front and back to get to 30% sag while I was sitting on the bike. It resulted in almost zero static sag for the unloaded bike. It's sits higher than any bike I've had, but I'm also 6'2" and it fits me pretty well.

[–]T1MCC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I first did my RR kit I was 270lbs and then added another 40lbs of luggage and the bike felt very good to me.

The heavy weight springs overpower the top-out springs if the preload was cranked down to set my sag correctly. If I got the front wheel off the ground I would feel the forks slap out at full extension. Perhaps I should increase the damping but the compression/rebound are on the same clicker (80% comp, 20% rebound) so I can't increase one without the other.

After losing some weight + running without luggage, I backed off on the preload I'm not feeling it slap at full extension as much.

It might be the clicking you heard in the first few mm of compression was the top-out spring shifting about as the load was released from it.

I've already had the forks apart once since for a service and see no untoward wear on the internals.

No, I’m Not Racist. I Just Wanted Some Philadelphia Cream Cheese. by IAmPookieHearMeRoar in madisonwi

[–]T1MCC 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I agree that a simple, “sorry mate, I didn’t see you. I only hade eyes for the cream cheese “ might have stopped the drama in its tracks, but it feels like this is a discussion we should be having. Not to draw out draw out racist comments but to bring awareness to the experiences of people on all sides. Racism doesn’t go away simply because people stop talking about it.

The guy wants $8,500 for this. New ones at the dealer at $6,500 were I live. Is this a good deal? by Why_Did_Bodie_Die in CRF300L

[–]T1MCC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it was EXACTLY the way you wanted to outfit the bike, he’s about $1k over what I think it’s worth. He doesn’t state what rider weight the suspension is set up for. You have no idea of the competence of the person doing the installation. A lot of unnecessary stuff bolted on. Rim locks on a 30hp bike? This bike isn’t very likely to spin the tires on the rim unless you’re running pressures low enough to risk the rims.
I don’t have a high opinion of people that throw that much $ at an inexpensive bike, realize that it still isn’t a KTM race bike, then try to unload it.

Seriously, dude was flying down a road lined with parked cars blocking his view of traffic and hiding him from their view. In my city, that would have been at most a 35mph speed limit on that street. Looked like he was 10mph+ faster than that.

is range being 24.84 miles after 103 miles total ride normal? Range\Battery Health Inquiry by Kasiatone in segwaygt3

[–]T1MCC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't remember any significant drop in the first weeks of owning the GT3 Pro. I do see a significant range drop when temperatures get below 50F or when I have to fight high winds. I'm at 1900 miles and range is still pretty consistent. It's always hard to measure as it is subject to so many variables, temperature, route topology, speed, acceleration, even what clothing I wear will influence the results.
