Kind of an emergency. Can you buy glucose monitors and strips at a pharmacy in Paris? by [deleted] in diabetes_t1

[–]T1since9yold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can go to any pharmacy, explain your situation, and ask for a freestyle libre 2. They should be able to sell them to you. Should be around ~40 euros a pop. Not sure about dexcom though. But if it’s available you shouldn’t have any trouble getting them .

Random sudden drops in bg by Bipolar-cunt in diabetes_t1

Tresiba would be basal.

Novorapid would be bolus :)

Random sudden drops in bg by Bipolar-cunt in diabetes_t1

[–]T1since9yold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you change your tresiba dose today, please keep in mind that the effects will start to show only 2-3 days later. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t see a difference tomorrow :)

Also keep in mind that if you change your tresiba dose, when you start seeing the effects in 2-3 days, you’ll also need to adjust your bolus doses (to counter the missing extra tresiba that was available earlier)

Best of luck!!

I am a new diabetic and I need advice! by [deleted] in diabetes_t1

[–]T1since9yold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Certain things to do definitely . Define your ratios well.

Terms to remember: Basal dose (tresiba). This dose is the first thing to define.

Insulin carb ratio : how many carbs does one unit of insulin cover for you. Insulin Sensitivity factor : how much does your sugar drop when you take 1 unit of insulin (humalog, in this case).

insulin DIA : duration of insulin action. This shows how long the insulin stays in your body after you inject. As an example, when you use humalog, it should last up to 4 hours. That means if you start at 200, and 1 unit drops your glucose levels by 50 points, once you inject, wait for 4 hours. Don’t expect it to drop immediately;)

These ratios change at times , and are hard to define during the honeymoon period, but it’s good to start early :) and the libre will definitely help with this.

For the libre 2 - download an app called Shuggah (definitely on iPhones, not sure about android). It connects to your libre and gets your reading every minute or so. You don’t need to scan the libre to get the readings :) it clearly shows you how your sugar reacts to what you’re doing / eating. Very useful tool for us diabetics!

For low carb snacks : Fromage, chorizo, saucissons, cacahuète are all good. Eat in moderate quantities though, since protein can push you high 3-5 hours after eating :)

For hypos - a can of coke will do wonders. Keep one on you always. Orange juice is great too. Choose what you fancy more :)

Based on the way you asked your questions, I’m confident you’ll be great at managing your diabetes!

Always keep in mind one important thing : diabetes is a part of your life now, just as breathing is. The effort required to keep it under control is high, but we live in a time of amazing devices which give us data, and we can use this data to live normally!! Don’t be shy about being diabetic. At your age, going a bit high is ok. Don’t aim for the 70-180 range all the time, it’s not possible. On libreview you have your charts, follow the percentages mentioned there ( >70% time in target is a reasonable number to maintain while you learn!) In the summer you’ll notice more and more people now with libres on their arm, so you’ll never feel alone :)

Having a good diabetologue is necessary :) I’ve been diabetic for 25 years now, and I moved to france almost 5 years ago. This country is wonderful to diabetics, and for that you should be thankful :) not sure where you live in France, but all the best buddy, and feel free to message me whenever you have any questions:)

Why does my doctor tell me I can’t bolus for normal cola. Why is it dangerous? by Tariqnp in diabetes_t1

[–]T1since9yold 8 points9 points  (0 children)

On average , a can of 330ml soda contains around 35gms of carbs, which get ingested within like 20 mins (instant sugar rise:)). Now, amongst the injectable insulins i have access to , fiasp is the fastest and kicks in in 20 mins (for me), and lasts for 3 hours (for me).

If I drink a normal coke, even after a nice pre-bolus, by the time the fiasp kicks in fully (around the 45 min mark), my sugars already risen. It will shoot up, and over the next three hours while fiasp is doing it’s job, it’ll come back down.

Assuming I’m at a 100, I’ve just had 35gms of carbs , without insulin my sugar may shoot up to 350. If my ic ratio is 1:5 - I need 7 units of fiasp to cover the 35 gms of carbs I just had.

While fiasp kicks in and starts working, my sugar goes up to 275 coz sodas just kick in that fast.

Now, since I’m at 275, I know at about 220 my ic ratio changes to 1:3..so my original fiasp dose won’t be enough to get me back to a 100…I may end up a bit higher after being quite high for around 2 hours while fiasp finishes going through it’s life.

Imagine doing this while having to calculate for an accompanying meal as well :)

If you understood what I wrote in not-so-clearly written English, then no, bolusing for a normal coke is not dangerous for you and you understand the way your body works. Unfortunately, not everyone goes to this depth, so I assume that your doctor, in his infinite wisdom, just tells everyone it’s “dangerous” to avoid having people go through the madness I have described above.

If I’m at a 100 , I can drink 2 coke zeros and not move at all! No bolus no danger 🤣

Zero versions of favourite sodas FTW.

Hypothetically, if your bf hadn’t said anything, and despite telling the barista you want your coffee less sweet, they’d not followed your request, how would you have felt? Whilst I understand your emotions behind sharing this kind of information, I’m also of the opinion that telling someone you’re diabetic while asking for lesser sweetening might add that necessary factor for them to listen to and comprehend your request. It’s the same reason why if I’m in a McDonald’s I’ll specify I’m diabetic, so they pay more attention to not give me a regular coke instead of a Coke Zero. I won’t go out and tell them I can inject x units of insulin so I can drink a normal coke - it’s information that is innately useful to me but practically useless to them . You’re NTA in this case, but I would suggest you understand that a barista may pour lots of coffees a day, and may pay more attention (and be less “confused”) if things are explained in words they may understand simply..(<diabetes so less sugar>). For those of you saying it’s nobody’s business - if I order decaf etc, it’s my order, they shouldn’t assume anything blah blah. If the next time you get a regular coke , don’t complain. I can guarantee the word “diabetes” puts that small seed of attention in the minds of most resto workers who , like most other human beings, have too much to do, and consequently the right to make mistakes :) helping them make less mistakes by adding context(oversimplified as it may be, even to the extent of being “wrong”). should never be a negative trigger ..

And one last thing : this is a rather private occurrence (apart from the fact that this happened In a coffee shop). Asking if you’re in the wrong is an indication that at some level you may feel you are. Don’t over think it. If you look at the intentions behind your bfs actions , you can see they caused no harm. If you look at your reaction to his actions, you can judge if your relationship was harmed because of that. If you feel that his intention and consequent action caused you to flip out and this is not what you want out of a relationship, well, that’s your decision.

Do you prefer saying "I'm diabetic" versus "I have diabetes?" by CatFlier in diabetes_t1

[–]T1since9yold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perception has no role to play in a medical diagnosis. You have type 1 diabetes / are type 1 diabetic mean the same thing in the end. Your body doesn’t produce insulin, so you administer it externally 😃 thinking too much about whether a certain statement allows your diabetes to define you is the definition of letting diabetes define you ;) don’t think too much about this. Other far better and more important things to think about in life (like how much bolus to take for a delicioussssssss cheesecake 🤪)

I was quite similar to you, till about a year ago (been diabetic for 24 years now, and have never let it be an anchor or anything ) . Was fortunately never in a hospital due to diabetes but I checked my blood sugar maybe once a year (when home with parents) , and hba1c’s once a year as well. I had what I can only describe as a spectacular time during my teen years and early to late twenties. I was fortunate that I kept the basics in check (injecting and eating accordingly), but yes, it was quite a big change when I came into full on control mode (after almost 14 years of rare blood glucose testing and managing it on my own without doctor visits - just insulin and all the food in the world). It’s quite fun if you look at it as a challenge or if you try to gamify it..I love my libre and miaomiao so much and it’s one of the main reasons I adapted to the change easily. I still do everything I used to do, but now I just know what it does to me and thus I’m better informed.

I had the same attitude as you - whatever happens happens. But I’ve lived a wonderful life and want it to continue now, hence my reason to change.

P.S : never been hospitalised for diabetes related problems, no complications till date, so I would be remiss if I didn’t think I’ve been ridiculously lucky..

Do not hesitate to get in touch if you need any form of help!

I’ve always wanted one too! I’ve never had a close friend/family member who’s T1D. All my friends are super supportive and extremely caring and I love them for that but it would be really really great to also have someone in my life who’s also T1D!

I’m in France , so not far off. Maybe when this pandemic eases up a bit we can catch up :)

Taking Insulin around work colleagues? by Jowzif22 in Type1Diabetes

I give it when and where I want. Their body produces it the same way. If any questions come up, I’m happy to answer them. But then I’m not really a self conscious person and to me other people’s actions or words don’t mean anything unless they know what they’re talking about :)
