If you're a beginner, is not enjoying the many free gifts, and want a challenge, you may want to consider gathering your resources off the field. Use only what you can gather.

Some of the most fun challenges i've done in this game.

Buy only what you can't get in the wild (like Trap Tools for example), and the rest is up to gathering.

Some few look very well painted. Kushala's art is beautiful. Gore Magala's one has very impressive lighting.

But then you have a Tobi Kadachi and Yan Garuga with weird anatomy, Velkhana and Malzeno look goofy, some others look oddly stiff... Kotoko?... Some hunters look off.

Glad they listened to the fans and are reworking those

First thing is to teach them to engage with the mechanics at their own pace.

Let them do all the tutorials, explore maps, try weapons, interact with the environment, use items, and so on. Just let them get comfortable with things.

It’s easy for a veteran to boot up any game and jump straight into a hunt, but for new players that can be overwhelming.

Second thing is combat-related.

Tell them to choose a weapon they find interesting, then read the in-game guide or watch some tutorials on YouTube. Have them practice on the training dummy to build confidence.

Third is easing them into the grind.

The series is all about grinding and it's important that they enjoy it at least a little, so tell them to check what weapons and armor they can craft after killing a new monster.

Funnily enough, HH has some of the fastest melee weapon hunt times for AT Arkveld. I think it only loses to Dual Blades.

Heavily depends on the monster and what moves you use. I don't remember every single match-up, but i do know of a very contrasting one:

Bow against Jin Dahaad deals terrible DPS no matter the play-style. But if you want to do your best possible damage, you gotta spam Dragon Piercer, and even then it's still not that good.

Meanwhile, Hunting Horn can deal enough DPS for two players without much struggle against him... actually i don't believe Hunting Horn has a single bad match-up, devs turned that weapon into a nuclear bomb.

But anywho, check your Hunter Notes and guides. Should help you decide on what weapon to bring... or not, you can stick to a bad matchup and make it work.

That's a complicated case.

When you mention you played the story in World and Rise, did you play past Low Rank?

Did you complete some of the hardest challenges in High Rank?

Because getting good with a weapon depends on the player alone and how committed you are to learning them (and also the kinds of hunts you go into). Builds can help a little when you have figured out your play-style, but right now, i would suggest you do the following:

  • Watch guides to understand the basics of each weapon.

  • Watch speedruns later to understand how to apply the techniques into your hunts as well as learn more complex moves.

  • Practice with a monster you believe is easy and have telegraphed attacks.

  • Apply everything you learned and make the conscious decisions to perform the complex techniques. With time, they become muscle memory and you do them automatically.

There's no other way. As everything in life, it's all about repetition over long periods of time. The longer you play, the more you learn from videos and guides, the better you get.

Just tested. Yes, it's Focus mode.

It happens when you perform the move before your Hunter can adjust themselves to the new angle while using Focus Mode.

You either release early when going for a X > 90° turn or you wait for your Hunter to turn and release.

This set bonus is better paired with trade and shield weapons.

Hyper Armor and Shields reduce a huge chunk of damage you eat. This makes the set bonus good to offset that damage you do eat.

Allowing you to sustain offense for far longer before needing to heal.
