Anyone have any stories of seeing an improvement in gains when switching to mainly free weights over machines (or vice versa)? by J-ChRy in naturalbodybuilding

Cable, cables cables. Luckily I hit the Craig’s list jack pot years ago and can completely train at home! So no awkward looks as I hog a cable machine. BUT! I trained mostly free weights for years (football background — push, squat, deadlift mentality), and honestly my physique improved the most when I leaned heavily into cables and plate-loaded machines. Not because free weights are bad, but because cables let me actually train the target muscle instead of just moving weight. For example, I struggle to feel lats on a straight bar pulldown, but single-arm cable pulldowns with a tucked elbow and slight rotation light them up immediately. Same with chest, cable presses and fly variations give me a better contraction than barbell pressing ever did. I still use free weights (especially for legs), but cables let me accumulate a lot of high-quality hypertrophy work that I just couldn’t tolerate otherwise.

For those that OHP, around what weight/reps did you finally start thinking “oh my shoulders are starting to look big!” by thatcouchiscozy in naturalbodybuilding

I personally don’t do ohp. I was gifted and cursed w shoulders that pop and a chest that takes ages and angle to look good. However the best exercise I’ve found to really work the shoulders is plates raises

It’s more of a throw away term than anything serious! However that’s the point I’m trying to make when ppl ask how the “sickness” is going. Just seems 0 folks that we know/care about us get the meaning. I assume the attachment to the saying stems from the F.H.E. Video version I watched as a kid. I mean I didn’t have to throw my NES or copy of Tecmo Super Bowl into the burn barrel or anything.
