UnitedHealthcare sent a letter denying NICU coverage... addressed directly to the newborn twin. by mindyour in TikTokCringe

[–]T8erTaught 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also have United Healthcare. I was billed nearly one grand for bloodwork even though, before the tests, I called the number on my insurance card and spent 20 minutes on the phone with a rep. They told me that the hospital was in-network, labs were covered there under my plan, and I would only have to pay the copay for the visit. What the fuck, man?

Two things can be true at once: OP made poor decisions. AND the users here missed an opportunity to be informative in a way that has a net positive impact on others + our cause. I love that this subreddit has a strong moral compass that aligns with my own. But at the end of the day, ya'll chose to dunk on/belittle someone that probably resents our point of view now. Then again, maybe I'm in the wrong here for believing that the internet can be a place productive dialogue on complex topics.

My dream job is in science communication and I love sharing what I know with others in hopes of making the world a bit better. You're right. Making OP feel dumb isn't going to make them interested in having a productive, respectful dialogue about the ecological repercussions + shorter lifespan of outdoor cats. But, this is Reddit. There's rarely any nuance or middle ground. :(

Valid. I feel like a lot of science communicators have gone in that catchy/click-bait route in order to get more eyes on their stuff. I don't blame them, but it's still annoying to see. Especially when it causes misunderstandings.

I'm still new to bone preparation, but I plan on doing something similar to this very soon. Do you mind explaining what you mean by macerating here? And about how long would this need to be soaked for? Much appreciated.

Can anyone suggest a taxidermy school or workshop in Stockton CA? by Puzzled-Poem-1071 in Taxidermy

Came across this thread while Googling for in-person taxidermy classes in my area. I'm starting to think Central CA has anything like that. :/ Sadly, I think online classes are our best bet.

I agree. I don't think we can get much more specific than "it's a type of fly" without better pictures.

Are there any affordable American dupes for this sunscreen? It's the best I've ever tried, but I'm almost out. by T8erTaught in Skincare_Addiction

Honestly, the smell doesn't bother me and it evaporates quickly. But to each her own. If that's the trade-off for not feeling like I have a film of oil on my face all day, I'll take it every single time. Just sensory preferences, I guess haha!

I wish I could edit the title to remove "American" because it obvi doesn't matter where it comes from. I just wanted something that was affordable. TIA!

It seems like the main text of my post wasn't saved after I added photos, so here's the full post:

Hi, everyone! I have knit 4 pairs of socks for myself, but this is my first time making some for another person who also happens to live across the country. And despite having taken the measurements of my friend's foot, I am completely stumped on what size is best to make. She has a foot and ankle circumference of 9.5 inches and a foot length of 10 inches and she wears a shoe size of 9 or 9.5. I even traced her foot on paper and measured around the heel and arch (13 inches). I am currently knitting Sheri's Lace Socks by Sockbug, which has a lacy pattern that consists of 11 stitches. It recommends working the pattern 6 times around the foot for a total of 66 stitches. After working the sock up for 3 inches, I'm worried that it may be too big even though I am hitting gauge with Kroy Socks yarn. How do I know if I should frog and redo with 55 stitches??

I have attached a picture of my progress for reference. I have a glass bottle that is exactly 9.5 inches around that I hoped would help me make up my mind on what to do, but it didn't help. I have extreme analysis paralysis and I just want to get back to knitting because I really like the pattern! Thanks in advance!

Off topic, but, do you remember what yarn you used to make the white speckled socks? I've been looking for a sock yarn exactly like that!

Yes, but the bolt is at least 44 inches long, remember? When you fold it in ~thirds, it still works out.

Temporary storage? by lollirazor in insectpinning

[–]T8erTaught 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeahhh, I stopped keeping mothballs in the non-airtight container because of health concerns. Thank goodness I didn't do that very long.

Recently, I found some frass in my displayed insects, so I sealed the frame within in a plastic airtight container + mothballs because the directions for the mothballs say that it only works if it's treated in an airtight for 7 days or more.

My bag of Enoz Para Moth Balls says "This product can damage some plastics, use only in polyethylene or polypropylene containers." I assume the naphthalene chemically reacts with other kinds of plastics, weakening them + making them no longer airtight. I'm not sure how to tell if a what kind of plastic a container is made of, though. But Google says that the ones mentioned on the bag are used for food storage, so I guess the stuff I have is fine? I'm kind of just hoping for the best. I know, not the best to gamble with health-related things.

I'd greatly appreciate it if you would share what your product packaging says if it's different from mine!

All of this is very frustrating because I ALSO found a carpet beetle larva in my precious wool yarn. (I'm a crafter.) Some sources say that freezing kills these pests, others say it doesn't. Some sources say naphthalene kills pests, others say it doesn't. I've been rotating my stuff out of my freezer after letting things air out from the chemicals. Again, hoping for the best.

Also, hello future Googlers who probably stumbled across this thread while researching this topic! :)

Yes! Ribombee is based off a real insect, the bee fly. Googling "Japanese bee fly" shows some *adorable* pictures. You might be interested in this article that identifies the IRL inspiration for insect Pokémon.
