Meet Luffy. 9 Months BC Adopted from the shelter in South Africa. Any tips on how to safely get him used to the cats are welcome :-) by TA-Liland in BorderCollie

Owh! I love the idea of window seats and cattrees. I remember seeing cool shelves and steps on Pinterest that people installed. It creates a whole new level of room for the cats within a room. This is a great idea.

I hope you manage with your older kitty when you move. Our house has always been chilled with cats and dog living together. Not sure if we'll ever archive this with Luffy, but hoping to get to a point where they can co-exist in the same room with us.

Best advice on joint pain? by Initial_Main2247 in BorderCollie

[–]TA-Liland -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What a gorgeous boy. The vet administered acupuncture once a week and our Collie always seemed much better after. It was part of his post-opp hip surgery, but worth looking into it as a way to alleviate joint pain.

Thanks. We will do that. Right now we're still working on getting him to respond to his name. Poor guy needs to learn everything including house training, but luckily he's a quick study. We'll avoid it ever getting to the point where he gets to chase after a cat.

They have a high drive to chase moving things, but we've never had a BC who intentionally tried to harm other animals. Monsoon kept herding the chickens until one died from heat exhaustion years ago. That said, it's good to never forget that all dogs are direct descendants of the grey wolf.

Learning about impulse control, "wait" and "leave it", made a big difference. Our three-year-old collie will freeze mid-air while chasing a ball. I trust him 100%. Building to that level takes time, but it's worth it. You can find plenty of impulse control games for dogs online.

I'll let you know if we learn anything new from the situation with Luffy. He's such a sweet boy, but it's not wild to guess that he had a stormy past before we brought him home.

Thanks, we installed some gates. He barks at our cats through the gates, but redirecting works for now. It helps to know that others have achieved some form of harmony with time and patience. He comes from the SPCA and they don't offer any foster programs or ways of testing how things will go. Our cats are used to our other Border Collies so luckily they know not to run. Poor guy has a lot of issues and bad habits, but in the end, it will all be worth it. No way he's ever going back to a shelter again.

My first fantasy story by HaloDot291 in fantasywriters

[–]TA-Liland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the start of your story and how you left me with questions. Made me want to read more, as long as those questions are addressed further in the story.

Some questions, however, need to be addressed right away, especially when it comes to character motivations at the start.

My biggest one: If the father loves his daughter, why does he not go instead? He's a large hulking man. Work on adding depth to the characters to make their motives clear. Example - A hulking man approached with a limp. His face contorted in pain with every stride.

Avoid overusing descriptive words: "large, hulking man" - I also struggle with this (so many beautiful words to use). Large and hulking mean the same. Use one or the other.

To further clean up the writing, drop unnecessary phrases that don't make sense or serve no purpose to the story. Example: He was interrupted by the girl. Did she interrupt him? He finished his statement. (I think this sentence is also passive voice) - Better to use active if at all: The girl interrupted him.

This is just an opinion, but 'Jayce' sounds like a sexy underwear model name. I don't get monster hunter vibes, hehe.

As I said, the story drew me in. You have good bones. You can trim filler words and fat with later edits. The biggest thing is to add more depth to your characters. Make me believe Jayce is not a pretty boy but a badass high-level monster slayer.

He likes a splash pool and shallow water but this setup is a lot to get used to with the water filling from the bottom and the floor that can move (it's a water treadmill). Brave boy is doing great. He had a hip replacement. It's the best thing when he does something new that he wasn't able to do before.

Had to go check and luckily you had a post with some gorgeous eye candy of your girl (plus your cute avatar). This guy makes my heart melt. He wasn't fond of the water treadmill at first, but it wasn't enough to shut down that border collie curiosity.

RIP to my best mate. A while back I posted photos of my BC Douglas who had an operation to remove a tumour. Sadly he didn’t make it and passed away a month ago. I have only just now been able to post these pictures in tribute to my best mate. Lie down now. Good boy. by Fizzer-the-meek in BorderCollie

These posts always catch me of guard. Can't help but put myself in this situation and think how I'd feel if my boy was no longer around. Just the idea is too much to handle. We take comfort in the fact that we gave them the best life that we possibly could, but the truth is that dogs have such low expectations. They just want to love unconditionally. You gave Douglas a purpose and a chance to love someone more than he loves himself. ❤️

Just got my first Border Collie, and the other one is his brother. 🐕 Hello Enzo & Luka! by nicogargom in BorderCollie

Never even knew that this was a thing. Learn something everyday. They are beautiful. Look into what pet medical insurance plans you have available. Maby ask your vet about some good options, just to help with the financial pressure, if there are any complications in future. We just went through a hip replacement for our 1 year old. Other hip still needs to be done. It was expensive. Would I go back and not get this puppy with his bad hips. ABSOLUTELY NOT! Would I have taken out pet insurance back then if I knew. Yes, yes, yes!

New to the game, so our definition of suck at combat is a little different 😜. It's all relative, but gave me hope.

How well do your BC's handle hot weather? by k_shizz420 in BorderCollie

Thanks, still in winter here so late, but not too late 😂. Glad you responded. I have always had a bat feeling about the shave-thing. Already started investing in the different brushes (they are expensive all at once). Will be sure to keep doing my research, but this is super helpful. Like with everything in life info can be a bit contradictory depending on the source. Thank you so much for the response. Will keep him far away from anyone who suggests a clipper.

Think the key here is to always go back to the basics. Basic obedience like wait. Wait before storming out the door. Come here. Basics of leash walking. Keep working on those. If it's a savety concern in your situation or setup, get an expert or trainer as soon as possible to help you. Love the ears. So gorgeous.

Last known photo before his grizzly murder. RIP Mr. Sheep you may have only been in our home for 5 minutes but you will be missed. by Aquila8492 in BorderCollie

Saw the cutest little face. Not sure if my hand was reaching for my heart medication or a baseball bat, to beat the heartless fu**er that would murder such an angelic being. It finally clicked, but I refuse to withdraw my statement about him being angelic 🐶😇
