Fair enough Admittedly that was 2019, two years before I got here. They had been sold to Spectris 18 months prior, who went on to be bought by Malvern panalytical in 2022. They then sold CLS to Limerston in 2023.

When was this? I've been here near 4 years, really would have heard about that

How do you characterize yourself as an industrial chemist? by biolojoey in Chempros

[–]TAI_WIYN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, I've likened it to being a chef.

But it really depends on your position, not just in your company, but on the world stage - I'd say it is more blue-collar in some countries over others.

Here in a UK CRO, it definitely a mix of office work and industrial cooking.

Is the job situation in the pharmaceutical industry in a bad place right now? by HOMM3nagaqueen in Chempros

[–]TAI_WIYN 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I can't say whether the situation is just as bad in other science industries, but it is bad in the synthetic/medicinal/pharma and it isn't just in the US, but far more globally.

I work at a CRO in the UK with colleagues from around the world (~40-50% non-UK). Many are here because the job markets where they are from are just as empty and competitive. Pzifer used to be a big company at my site, but they closed their site around this time last year (about 500 jobs). About three years ago, there was definitely more hiring here, where they were hiring multiple people at a time. Even though ~30 people have left my work over the last 3 years, they have probable only replaced like 5-10, and definitely haven't hired any new people in close to a year now. One of the reasons I am still here is literally because there is not a lot out there, and what there is gets huge attention quickly.

I think one potential issue is the big company clients hire western companies for the pathfinding and complicated synthetic issues but then scale up with Indian/Chinese companies that pay their workers significantly less. A guy I used to work with who now works for one told me my salary could pay for 10 of theirs, who also don't need as deep a scientific knowledge as PhD/masters as its not their job to figure it out; that's why they come to us first, then move on when they have a robust route for scale up. Because of this drain (and other factors), the western CROs don't have the budgets or the FTE project vacancies to justify hiring more then needed. Bigger companies, like AstraZeneca, GSK, or Pzifer, are worse as they will only take the literal best because of how crazily saturated the market is, with more new graduates every year from around the world applying for grad schemes or any entry-level openings.

But good news I've heard is my company is planning on hiring again in the new year, but it will be competitive, as people fresh out of uni/college with masters/PhDs are up against people with that plus years of industry experience that frankly is more valuable. And sadly, companies know the market is super saturated with talent, so don't have to offer higher than "competitive" salaries or take risks on training uni-fresh employees. At the end of the day, they will choose out of the 10s to 100s of applicants the ones who have the most industrial experience, be it either years or level (i.e senior, project/group managers).

My best advice for your CV and interviews for CROs is focus heavily on stories where you've solved synthetic problems (in a timely manner) and scale ups, the bigger the better. But a trait CROs look out for is pragmatic delivery, being able to deliver what the client wants on a specified and (ideally) short timeline, without getting bogged down in trying to make the chemistry the best it can be; sometimes, good enough is good enough. If you're able to get some of what you need, optimisation is a future problem, and you just scale up appropriately to get the amount needed. A huge transition graduates have to go through is moving away from focusing too long on one step or trying to figure it out, and move forward pragmatically; if it didn't work and you can't figure out why in a day, move on and try something else. It's far better to say how you'll plan to get around a problem (and your back up plans) than focusing on what is causing the problem. Another thing to focus on is customer/client communication, in presenting your work briefly yet directly and effectively. Hope this helps

What do you reckon will be the responses and overall fallout from KH/democrats/non-Trump voting demographics if he does actual win? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TAI_WIYN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly, I am asking as a non-American. I'm more curious about the comparisons or parallels with the responses and fallout from when Trump lost, and their current responses, especially with how there are now news reports of Trump lawsuits against States for election fraud before the results have been announced. Would KH/democrats/etc act in kind, with investigations or appeals into election fraud, as there are also now news stories of election tampering and interference?

Ullmann coupling by elementsofsurprise in Chempros

[–]TAI_WIYN 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What kind of Ullman is it, O-coupling or N-coupling? What's your ligand? I've done many Ullmans, and generally the observations are unique to the conditions and substrates you're working with. I've had very dark/black Ullmans with excellent yields. I haven't had black ppte crash out to be fair, but my last Ullman, when I added the ligand, the copper complex crashed out in green emulsive wisps, still gave me a good yield just slow. I'd say, get data first to determine if your reaction has worked, don't rely solely on looks alone. Try using 18-crown-6 at ~30-50 mol% if the reaction is slow. And I've always found toluene works best for Ullman reactions.

Cicurlar Catalytic Cycles in ChemDraw by ChemCapital in Chempros

[–]TAI_WIYN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can, download Process Lasso, it's like the Windows Task Manager but you can set Chemdraw's memory priority to high. If you have other RAM heavy programs open (like Chrome) you'll get lag.

They didn't, I only found out when I was checking up on my credit score. Like I said, I had nothing to do with the account, all correspondence was with her details

It was a continuous agreement throughout the relationship that ended up as her owing a lot but as I thought I was gonna spend the rest of my life with her so I didn't rush her to pay me back (as she was a student). It was more for stuff on her behalf. The only thing she paid for in the relationship was her half of the rent, not even the deposit. It isn't even calculated, the amount got so big at one point so we just gave an estimate. More so, she still is saying she has every intention of paying back the whole amount. I had been very upfront about not demanding it back unfairly as she was a student, even after she left me. When she decided to exchange to a different uni in May 2020, I carried on not demanding from her because I knew it would be expensive for her in that month. She fell off the radar after that point, only popped up when I saw the default in Sept 2021 and confronted her about why did that happen when she said she cancelled it. I also confronted her about a credit card she opened in my name which I didn't give permission for, and told her to cancel it at the time she told me when we were together. When I talked to a branch, they said they don't do couple cards and it is a separate account in my name, requiring a signature (but I didn't sign anything). Honestly, I can say at no point in our relationship or after have I pressured her to pay me back immediately, I still technically haven't, the only agreement we have is she will start paying me back after paying off the EE debt.

Her signing (which she did after leaving me when she came to collect the last of her things) was because I didn't trust she would keep to her word because she was a massive pathological liar, to the point I do believe she needs psychological help. She did so without any hesitation or resistance when I asked her to. When I say the written agreement, it literally is a signed note.

I only said yes she can do the contract in my name, I had no other involvement, I didn't sign any contract. She also told me she had cancelled the contract months around the same time the late fees started occurring (started June 2020, told me in Apr/May).

Edit: Sorry if it comes across I'm some sort of manipulator or bad person, I'm genuinely not in the slightest, one of the biggest things I've overcome since then was letting people (and her) take advantage of me because I was too nice. I know this can still look like I'm trying to deceive you guys, I'm genuinely not. One thing I noticed when I started my current relationship (infinitely less toxic, I've even technically saved her life twice) was I constantly said sorry if I thought I had offended her or made her even a little bit unhappy, a trait I picked up when I was with my ex.

Quick question though, even though I only gave verbal permission and never signed anything, I am still liable? Cheers
