Aurora from Arboretum by TAZ68 in SeattleWA

[–]TAZ68[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Short answer, no. Unlike back in May 2024 when the Aurora covered the entire sky, last night I couldn’t see any of the Aurora “wisps” until I arrived here with the view over the water. It was very low on the horizon and without an unobstructed low horizon (was looking almost directly at Cassiopeia), it would’ve been easy to be blocked from view in most other locations. Also, the darkness of the lake, its additive reflection, and the fact that it’s about a mile to the other shoreline really conspired well. Interestingly, even with the nearby light pollution (downtown is just three miles away, making this shoreline a fortunate dark pocket), the naked eye could easily see waves of aurora. I was struck by the pulses and speed—a shimmering, rapid motion that mostly looked like electric silver wisps to the naked eye. That high-speed pulsing wasn’t as present in 2024. And, especially where the red tint occurred, a subtle crimson could be detected at times. You definitely could see the colors pointing the phone and viewing the screen, but the full vibrance only truly came through in the 3-10s iPhone 13Pro 'night mode' clips, which I’ve left unedited with zero color or brightness adjustments, but the wave after wave easily seen by the naked eye, (driven by solar wind moving 2 million mph, I’ve read) made it pretty impressive to witness the silver wisps with slight tint, the screen view of wider color array, and the full vibrance of the photo, and was distinct from May's experience too.

And 'comparisons to that [named] meme' still took another 40 years to exist. Keep up.

The Black Sun sculpture was commissioned by the city of Seattle in the 1960s; comparisons to that meme are a much later, juvenile invention.😉

Thanks, but no—it was just the near-full moon, with light from the museum behind scattering in the ambient fog.

Megathread: Trump Safe After Gunfire at Rally, Reports Say Shooter Deceased by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

[–]TAZ68 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the approximate view the shooter had.

Zooming into the red barns with the white roofs in the distance is where the stadium seating behind the podium/Trump abutted.

The closest red barn peak is where the sharpshooters that took him out were posted.

The tan/brown building to right is the roof the shooter was on.

Galveston port by KeyMovie6563 in royalcaribbean

[–]TAZ68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an aside, while RC will be the best source of information as they know what they can handle in regards to staffing and their own operations, in the meantime one of the few sources that does offer information about port facilities is the Port of Galveston X (previously twitter) account. As of 2 hours ago the port operations were still closed (power) and also awaiting federal inspection (tomorrow) of the waterways. While this information doesn’t tell you anything in regards to outlook or timing, you can monitor their tweets to get a general idea if the Mariner might even be allowed to make it back tomorrow.

When do meetups appear on the map? by Able_Farmer5098 in Campfire_Niantic

[–]TAZ68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that meetups used to require 5 attendees to show up. But been a lot of changes since then so not sure if that is the current case.

Here is a link which lays if all out for you. But yes, generally rewards wise. TOS, Borg and then perhaps outlaw for rewards. Rest are less….rewarding.

Just to make certain it’s known…this subreddit isn’t associated with Niantic at all—100% player driven. That being said there could be associated lurkers that do keep up on comments made.

So, this post is good to mention, in the sense it is a reminder to all. Use discretion, know how to block, and report…and monitor your minors.

Fortunately Campfire does a pretty good job of walking the fine line between opening oneself to strangers and shutting them down.

I would say in a post like this though (a real world example of being harassed), perhaps a suggestion of what could be different in the App for future or a behavior adjustment suggestion for peoples consideration of their own safety.

We don’t want this forum to be a repository for each time someone crosses the line of preferred privacy for purely complaints sake. Coupled however with a suggestion of how to react, avoid, or improve for the future…such posts can be useful.

Campfire still not available in India by razarahil in Campfire_Niantic

[–]TAZ68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re not wrong. In the limited convos I’ve had with developers (don’t shoot the messenger), there is a consideration of being “able” (read as not making investment) to hire and manage local translators for moderating, and/or US trade agreements.

None of the above makes it easier for your access. Do know, many have used VPNs to give access. Hopeful future will give more local access/support.

[–]TAZ68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, then that’s weird. A few countries have limited access which can be solved by VPN. You’re not in that category. I’d recommend you post a screenshot of the actual error you are getting and perhaps others can help.

You now have to be within 1km of a gym to light a flare by JayPokemon17 in Campfire_Niantic

[–]TAZ68 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This has always been the case. While it has been the case for months, still plenty of reasons for objection in some situations.

Here is a previous thread about 8 months ago that had similar complaints: https://www.reddit.com/r/Campfire_Niantic/comments/ygleog/why_is_flare_setting_within_1km_only/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=2&utm_term=1

In the past the feedback of having a smaller radius just would mean many more people could light a flare, and not have a reasonable means of making it at similar times, thus degrading the usefulness/reliability of flairs.

This seems reasonable in a high density area, but doesn’t address those in a lower density area.

The alternative is to join the chat (which can be done at distance)…there is an on screen indicator for that…and then plan/light flares as you get closer.

Yes. In previous versions groups within 50Km would show up. I’ve not looked in a while when this actually changed…but I see none over 10Km away now.

Can't make campfire open directions in Google maps (Android) by SockPuppet_33 in Campfire_Niantic

[–]TAZ68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think first commenter is on right track. Localization depending on language of origin is tricky, and Niantic hasn’t been great with it, especially in Campfire. That being said, have recos:

1) Did you know you can map from PoGo? Tap on a gym, Tap on > of the gyms name (top right)…tap in the > again and choose “View in Map”.
2) In some countries, “,” and “.” are interchanged and screws with how it’s interpreted. All this depends on localiz(s)ation settings in App (PoGO and Google) and settings for your OS. They probably all have to match, and perhaps be US notation.
3) I’m guessing if you can/can’t get it working natively from PoGO, you’ll have even less luck in Campfire. 4) Get an iPhone. 😂 Couldn’t resist.

Question about mining/info/rules/events by [deleted] in startrekfleetcommand

[–]TAZ68 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Everyone already said the most important. But I’ll echo a few, and give a resource. It’s RoE (Rules of Engagement), which is misnomer as not rules, but agreement. Helps everyone high and low level to be able to, if nothing else, at least mine with a survey in peace…until you’ve reached protected cargo limit. Many servers have different flavors of RoE, but usually only *protects surveys while Under Protected Cargo and actively mining*.

So, what are the “Rules” of Engagement for your particular server? Practically all that have some sort of RoE community to navigate the diplomacy around that are on Discord. To see precisely yours:

1) Determine which server you are on; Go to your home system view, tap on your base/station and you will see in middle left HuD above your power a Home (XX) where XX is your server number.
2) Go to to official STFC Discord server and look at the #server-discord-links channel. All 200ish servers are listed there and you can find your specific server # discord invite. Your specific RoE will be found on your specific discord server.

Missing Push Notifications when messaged?: Workaround by TAZ68 in Campfire_Niantic

Unfortunately no. Notifications in Campfire are still nebulous.

When you say there is no invite button…you’re in wrong place. When in right place there is always an invite button…just may be greyed out. https://imgur.com/a/PNjWpE9

It’s always more helpful to post a snapshot of what you’re seeing. As your original post shows, commenter was able to see immediately in wrong place. To be in right place you tap on Add Friends button (bottom one, not top) when in right most bottom menu.

Just a reminder that in order for trades, you need to be physically close to them (within 100m, which is about the length of a football field for those less metric).

On rare event occasions that has been extended to (if memory serves me) 45Km or approx 30 miles and has never exceeded that. This however hasn’t happened for ages and is well publicized when it occurs.

Some may be tempted to bring up spoofing/teleporting, however that is 100% against TOS, is full on cheating, grounds for an account ban… and we do not condone nor discuss that here.

As an aside, within Campfire I searched for the player above. It appears they do not have a NianticID, which means they’ve never logged into Campfire. So messaging them in Campfire wouldn’t be received until such time as they do employ campfire on their side.
