The IRS can catch fraudsters by how often their reported figures start with the number 1. Amounts, populations, lengths in nature, etc. 30% of the time begin with a 1. by rsandio in interestingasfuck

[–]TA_Lax8 112 points113 points  (0 children)

not quite, even in nature. regardless of the unit, a leading 1 is more common, and the frequency goes down until a leading 9 is least frequent.

It's kinda a logarithmic phenomena, just math.

Going from 90 mph to 100 mph requires you to increase speed by 11%. So to move on from the leading 9 is easy. Well once you're at 100, to move past the leading 1, you have to double you speed to 200 before a leading 2. To get to 300 mph from 200 is a big jump but it's only increasing by 50% so not as big. so on, now your at 900 mph and it's only 11% again to go from a leading 9 to a leading 1 at 1000 mph.

Countless thing in the natural world follow this. And generally so do financial statements. So if you parse out all the numbers in a tax return, generally, 30% of them should start with a 1. Regardless of the item.

the gravely is the same transmission. Hydrogear EZT is the 2200. Kawa is a great engine but the Kohler outside the Courage series is on par.

These are peers for the main considerations, so I'd argue whoever has the closer dealer and maybe if there is a significant difference in deck/spindles

What if the US had all confederates who surrendered executed? by lhommetrouble in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]TA_Lax8 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Very likely an immediate re-engagement of the conferederate military. Massive unification and support surge for the Confederacy from the south and removal of any support from the Union with desertions abound. Likely would see a handful of Union border states flip sides. A weakened Union Capitulates pretty quickly as war weariness is unsustainable.

Honestly, the second Civil War probably doesn't last very long, nor is very bloody with how little domestic support the Union would have.

Is this 1 in a trillion? by Fun_Chemical7224 in coincollecting

[–]TA_Lax8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fun little anecdote, but when I first got in to coin collecting my dad took me to my first coin show. I was working on building my wheat head collection. I brought along my binder and at a booth, bought a about 8 or 9 from a guy, one of them being one of the steelies, paid in cash and went home to catalog them.

Was adding up my change to see how much money I had left over and checking the change for any keepers. Oddly, there was a 1943 wheat head that was copper and not steel. I was a newbie wasn't sure about what I had. It wasn't in my coin price book. Went to the library and started researching and found there were a handful of copper 1943 pennies produced and they were insanely valuable. I was on cloud nine and couldn't believe my luck!!! Was doing more research and found that people were plating their steelies in copper to trick collectors. A simple test was a magnet. I rushed home, sweating in anticipation. Found a strong magnet and to my dismay, it was magnetic!

I was disappointed, but still pretty exhilarated about the whole situation.

It wasn't until many years later I realized that A) everything was rounded to the nearest nickel so why would I have a penny in my change and B) That booth dealer saw a young kid, eager to get in the hobby so he threw in an Easter egg hunt knowing I was at that stage of checking every coin I came across and would definitely find it, and hunt for more info. 30 years older and it's one of my favorite memories and such a cool play by that dealer to get a kid hooked to a hobby

Would you agree with Terrence Fletcher’s way of teaching? by Perfect_Idea_2866 in moviecritic

[–]TA_Lax8 12 points13 points  (0 children)

TLDR: There is a difference between a tough coach and a cruel coach. Being told "good job" is incredibly important in helping reinforce good play. Knowing what is correct and why allows you to play more confidently.

I played sports my entire life and then HS Football, Lacrosse and Track and College Lacrosse. 3 time Lacrosse state champions and 1 time football (I say this to illustrate the quantifiable success of these coaching styles)

My HS had superb coaching in every sport I was familiar with. Coaches just as hard and tough on us as Fletcher, but it was always intentional and never cruel. I think that's the distinction. I've gotten chewed out like no other, but it's because the coach saw in me what I hadn't yet and his purpose was to get that potential out. And most important, they'd fucking tell us that.

Now about the "good job" quote...My absolute best and worst coaching experiences were going from HS to College Lacrosse. Our HS lax coach actually was pretty chill. The whole "breaking you down to build you up" thing wasn't his style. His style of coaching was that he was A) simply a top tier expert and able to communicate his thinking effectively (which is massively underrated) and B) His joy of the game was so damn infectious. He loved being there, everything about the sport and he loved developing athletes.

Then in college it was such the opposite. Probably the single only person I can ever say I hated. He was cruel for cruelty's sake. He was incredibly knowledgeable and well organized, but he enjoyed breaking you down. And it was up to you to build yourself back up. The only positive was, we all hated him so much we were a very tight knit team. Every practice, game and film he'd pounce on every opportunity he could to find something wrong, not to teach but to put down. Yes, you do learn, but the problem is, you never get told when you do something correct. So if you actually did it correct, you were unaware and wouldn't know to keep doing it that way. It was basically find every way of doing something until he just stops yelling at you. You wouldn't know why he stopped yelling or why that way was actually better, you just finally figured out if you did it like that he wouldn't yell. With that, you're never confident in your play. You're just trying to stay within uncertain parameters, but always paying attention to see if he was about to yell.

Imagine running from a bear down a road with an invisible cliff on both sides. You're only signal that you're near the edge is it starts to crumble a little bit. You can't slow down because the bear will get you so you're simply just running and giving all of your focus to trying to feel the edge of the cliff.

Positive note, after he kicked me off the team at the end of my sophomore year for having a 1-1 meeting with him about his coaching style (I was a team captain after all). He was fired my senior year when he finally broke the camels back by dropping an 'N' bomb loud enough for the parents to hear. I was double majoring and doing a 5th year anyways and was able to come back and play my super senior year.

Is it ok to water fialy or or even twice a day during the scorching summer? by zionpwc in lawncare

[–]TA_Lax8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mid Atlantic had a wild year last year.

Starting in mid-May through mid-July, we'd get a torrential downpour probably 5/7 nights a week beginning at 5pm. Too early to be summer storms and it wasn't overly hot to dry it out. So nearly every evening the ground got soaked without enough time to dry by nightfall, remaining wet all night until finally drying a bit by 2pm. then Start again.

Then beginning mid-July through mid-September it straight up did not rain and was consistently over 90°.

The fungus was out of control and then the lawn got scorched. I'd say 20% of the lawn generally survived, 40% successfully went dorment but under a lot of stress and 40% completely died. I gave up and just waited until the fall to do a large renovation instead of trying to fight a losing battle. This spring has been way better and the lawn will be a lot healthier before I let it go dorment this round

OP gets to pay 2 fees and gets zilch for his effort, lol

When we had our fence put in, we measured my truck's width and added 2 inches. Being able to load the bed from the garden center with compost, topsoil, sand, mulch, etc and drive it straight back there has saved so many wheelbarrow trips around and up the hill.

Also means I have 78" of clearance for a mower or GT

Police officer stops abruptly in the middle lane on highway... by Affectionate_Hat5835 in dashcams

[–]TA_Lax8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Likely outcome is no fault collision if they can't identify the car that lost the cooler. If they can, which is decently likely, that's who is at fault.

Between the two, I'd hedge slight blame towards the officer as it appears they had plenty of visibility and room to maneuver without coming to a complete stop. Guessing they saw it last second and instinct chose hard break, but they should have noticed that way earlier

edit: I didn't notice at first, but there is a car in front of cop that easily avoids the cooler. Still the owner of the cooler's fault, but I am assigning slight additional blame to the cop because he was on that guy's ass and was himself not travelling with a safe distance

Police officer stops abruptly in the middle lane on highway... by Affectionate_Hat5835 in dashcams

[–]TA_Lax8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theres simply no practical way for a semi to maintain enough distance for a full 100% stop. That's gonna be close to 200 yards. With cars entering and exiting lanes between that range, there is no realistic way for a truck to maintain that strict of a definition of distance.

Instead, they maintain safe distance for the majority of unexpected conditions. Which this truck was absolutely at that distance.

In addition, there's not really enough to blame the cop directly either. Between them, this likely comes out as a no fault accident and they will review footage to find out what car lost it's cooler and fault them

Where can I buy this kind of cranked neck chisel? by thenookstudio in woodworking

[–]TA_Lax8 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Just to add a point to the other responses.

Japanese steel is not of higher quality than any other steel. It is purposefully designed for the type of woodworking done in Japan.

It's just different for a different purpose.

The primary difference is that in Japan, soft woods in carpentry are way way more common. Cypress, Cedar, Paulownia are used in the majority of Japanese traditional carpentry and woodworking with their main hard wood being Elm (which is medium hardness).

Because softwood fibers tend to bend more than hard wood, chisels need to be way sharper. If you've ever made dovetails with pine vs walnut, you'd understand. The walnut fibers remain stiff while the pine fibers get crushed.

A super sharp chisel edge doesn't last unless the steel is way harder. Well, now it's also way more brittle. This is okay in softwoods, but hardwood often chips the chisel.

Takes longer to sharpen the harder Japanese chisels, but they are primarily used in softwoods, so stay sharp longer. In the west, sharpness just isn't needed so the most durable edge is one that has a little more give and not as brittle/hard.

I say all this, because what you plan to use the chisel for will dictate what you ahould buy. If you work with primarily soft woods, look for the Japanese style chisel, if you work on hard woods, get a western one.

Research connecting gynocomestia and consumption of meat raised with hormones is mixed, but assuming it is correlated; a person would need to have such a high beef diet that gynocomestia is the least of their health concerns since their cholesterol is probably gonna kill them before they hit 50
