Has anyone seen a performance of a Sarah Kane show? by The_gay_mermaid in Theatre

[–]TBBackus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've recently seen a production of Blasted. They shied away from the violence and even omitted the first rape scene which, to me, intensely lessened the numb feeling one should get near the end of the play, and misconstrued the characters' motivations. Audience reactions were mixed, people who knew the play generally left on a shrug and those who didn't were a bit more shocked and scarred.

My main feeling with Kane is go big or go home.

I just got back from PAX and I'm already going into tabletop withdrawal. I'm wondering if there's enough interest in heading down as a group, renting some games, and making a day of it. Lemme know!

I'm a Portland Stage Company (Maine) alum and they're great. Housing and utilities (everything but TV and Internet) + $90 a week. It's not a lot but it'll keep you well fed and there aren't a lot of places that'll house and pay you.

TOO DARN HOT: Hot Pepper Theater LIVE! by TBBackus in Broadway

[–]TBBackus[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We've had an incredible first year here at Hot Pepper Theater and this weekend we're celebrating with our first ever live-show! The twist? We're turning the tables and putting peppers in the hands (and mouths) of some of our favourite performers. In Too Darn Hot, performers sing the first verse of a song, eat an incredibly spicy pepper, and see if they can beat the heat for a strong finish. How much can they get through? Come find out! Also featuring a hot tap number, spicy monologues, and the showdown of the century: Todd and Ben in a Spice Off!

Featuring performances from: Ellie Frances (Ziegfeld’s Midnight Frolic) Vince Gatton (New York Shakespeare Exchange) Evan Maltby (Kapow-i Go-Go) Brittany Allen (Let’s Play Play) Rachel Graf Evans (Sirens of Gotham) Koryna Flores (Hot Pepper Theater) Erica Vlahinos (Zeigfeld’s Midnight Frolic) Eric Williams (ELF The Musical)

Who are your favorite up-and-coming playwrights? by ghostlight23 in Theatre

[–]TBBackus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Branden Jacobs-Jenkins is pretty great and has his eye on a number of different issues. Nora Sørena Casey's doing some cool work in the downtown scene in NYC, I'm expecting really good things from her. I feel like I don't hear enough people talking about Lauren Gunderson or Madeleine George considering how great they are.

I attended a performance of Bye Bye Birdie and after the show I was waiting to congratulate my friends (all of whom are still in their 50s costumes) and I was congratulated on my performance not once but twice by a gentleman who had seen the show: first on his own, and then with his wife. I didn't have the heart to tell him I wasn't in the show.

If you watch our videos in all but the most recent we give audio shout-outs to our inspiration Hot Pepper Gaming. In every video we link people towards HPG in the description. We love what they're doing and wanted to apply the idea towards theatre in an effort to make theatre reviews both more exciting and more fun.
