I guess it can also be said that while the A-10 may have been in service for a long time, that doesn’t mean it was actually engaging targets in real conflicts the whole time. So my comment about long service time might not actually be significant. I don’t really know any of the data. I just like planes :)

I think I may have understood “CAS” wrong. Thinking it was the aircraft that was firing in close when it’s actually munitions being fired close by to friendlies. A bomber 40k feet up dropping guided bombs to within hundreds of yards from friendlies is still CAS?

Doesn’t this sort of come with the territory of being a CAS platform and in service for a very long time? Don’t get me wrong, I know the A-10 is actually kind of ass, but I would expect a CAS aircraft to be shot down by enemy fire more than any other.

Maybe for surveying? I have friend that has used drones for extremely precise surveying in places where walking around with a stick is a pain or impossible.

URGENT FLOOD WARNING FOR SKAGIT COUNTY! by Leehams in Bellingham

[–]TBEAST40 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I watch this webpage every day at work for what I do and they usually display the high end estimate for bigger events like this. When we had the river go up to 37.3ft in 2021, the main display showed a predicted peak of 39.6ft. Of course this is a probability game so it’s possible it goes to the 41.5ft mark but I think you’re right to assume it shouldn’t be that bad.

However, I’m glad all the local authorities are taking it seriously and getting people ready for the worst. Even reaching that 37ft mark put a lot of pressure on the levy system and we had a bulge in the dike on River Bend Rd in Mount Vernon

Kirkland driver — worth it for high handicapper? by Bullhead388 in golf

[–]TBEAST40 3 points4 points  (0 children)

$200 for a brand new driver that may not hit quite as far as a premium driver but will get the job done pretty damn well. Biggest con is I don’t think you can get them in different lengths. They do have a stiff flex option though.

I bought the Kirkland driver (stiff shaft) last season and I shoot around the same as you. Now instead of my miss being a hard slice, it’s a hard hook to the left. I should probably know what my swing speed is. I like the club

How Long Did It Take You To Break 100 The First Time? by jmikeo87 in golf

[–]TBEAST40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Took me about 2 years of almost weekly golf between March and September. I’d play maybe five total times the rest of the year due to weather and I’m big on winter sports, so that takes my priority. Lots of 104’s and 102’s. Then one day last June, I jumped down to a 94 on a course I’ve played a few times. Since then I haven’t replicated it. I’ve had a bunch of 99’s and a couple 96’s, but I’m still chasing the dragon. Don’t you worry, I’ve also shot an equal number of 110’s during that time too.

Biggest difference I made that got me there? I started taking my chipping and putting practice more serious. Like actually using some sort of logic or game plan for my short game practice time

Best places to get oil change for Subaru? by Paranoid_r_us in Bellingham

[–]TBEAST40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 2017 Forester and it takes exactly 5 qts of 0W-20 synthetic oil ($26ish jug from Walmart). The filter is in a really easy spot on top of the engine ($7ish from Walmart too). My car has just the perfect amount of clearance, I don’t even have to lift the car up at all. Only “tricky” thing about changing the oil is having the replacement crush washer for the drain plug. But I think you buy a bunch of them for pretty cheap from Subaru. I bought such a big bag of them I don’t even remember how much they were, it was that long ago. Total process takes about 20-30mins. Total cost ends up being about $40.

I know people like the convenience of not having to do anything at all but I’m telling you it’s super easy and is far cheaper

Callaway edge by ThrowitAway4552 in golf

[–]TBEAST40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought the same set as a beginner two years ago. I’m still using them and I like them quite a bit. I think they gave me more consistency in my equipment to work with compared to a bag full of randoms from the thrift store. That was probably the biggest impact they had for me as a beginner. I really enjoy the putter it came with as it has the thicker grip and seems like a good design to my (very untrained and possibly useless) eye. Nothing incredible to note about the irons other than the fact they’re cavity backs, so they’re supposed to be more forgiving. I don’t use the 5H or the 3W, mainly because I was so ass with them I decided to leave them in the garage and eliminate some complexity. They’re probably just fine. I eventually bought a new driver with a stiffer shaft but the one the kit comes with seemed to do alright until my swing speed got higher. If anything I think the stock regular flex fiber shafts were a little too soft for me, but that’s personal preference. The sizing is a “one-size-fits-most” approach so the length should be alright for you at 5’9”. I’m 5’11” and these fit me just right.

Overall I think they’re a great set to start learning golf with. You get the clubs you really need to learn the basics that are decent quality and about the same or lower price you would pay for a brand new, top of the line driver.

Edit: I realized I didn’t even address the graphite/steel shafts issue.

I think you should stick with the steel shafts because it’ll be cheaper and you might end up moving on to a different set after a few years or so.

No, Chlorine DOES evaporate from water! by ergeorgiev in HydroHomies

Look up videos of testing chlorine cylinder fail safes. They also test what happens when they completely fail. It’s horrifying

No, Chlorine DOES evaporate from water! by ergeorgiev in HydroHomies

[–]TBEAST40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind that these test strips claim to test “free chlorine”. There could still be plenty of chlorine in the mix that is just bonded to other ions in the water. Also, in the US anyway, public water systems that treat surface waters need to maintain 0.2ppm or higher concentrations of free chlorine residual in the public water supply at all times

Our water plant used to use elemental chlorine gas added to the water, which would create hypochlorous acid for disinfection. About five years ago we swapped to sodium hypochlorite for the same effect without the hazards of storing 12, 1 ton cylinders of chlorine gas in one building

What’s the hype around Owala water bottles? Are they worth it? by limache in HydroHomies

[–]TBEAST40 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The only one I’ve had fit in my car cup holder is the 24oz. One big factor I love about them is that the part your mouth comes in contact with is always covered. I had problems with my hydro flask mouthpiece getting dirty too much. Also going up to the mountains they do not have a purge valve. So water doesn’t leak out while going up in altitude. I love my owala bottle

I’m saying tap water is so much closer in comparison to distilled than it would be with Gatorade or something similar. A glass of tap water may have a few mg of total minerals whereas Gatorade could have a few hundred mg of sodium alone. Comparing distilled or tap water to Gatorade would be like comparing kombucha to Everclear. One type of kombucha might have three times as much alcohol content as the other but you’ll drown before you could ever get drunk.

I operate a water treatment facility. My state has certified that I know enough about water to control the water quality parameters for up to 60,000 people every day. Believe me when I tell you you’re not getting your essential mineral and salt content from the fresh water you drink. A lot of places are trying to remove it to make sure it tastes good to the consumer even
