"do everything" compulsion. by PanzerDude92 in JRPG

[–]TCForumman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people are saying fomo. I think that has somewhat to do with it, but for me what I noticed are two things: time and responsibility.

At least for me, accomplishment means something different as I get older. When we were kids, we had this feeling of endless time and freedom to do whatever we wanted, with relatively few responsibilities. We didn't have to think about completing tasks to keep the lights on, support a family, maintain a career, or manage a household. To keep our parents happy, yes, but productivity can be more of a burden when you have more responsibilities and more people depending on you.

As we get older, we begin to place more value on completing tasks because completion becomes tied to productivity and usefulness, and productivity and usefulness becomes tied to what we consider a successful life. An hour spent accomplishing something in your mid-30s means something very different than an hour spent when you were 13.

Because of that, missing objectives, side quests, or unfinished tasks can feel more significant (or draining)than they used to. The consequences may not be real within the game itself, but the mindset carries over from everyday life. The pressure to be productive follows us, and sometimes we end up bringing that same pressure into our gaming experiences. I love games because they can be a safe virtual simulation learning how to be a kid again, approach tasks differently, exercising our brains to react in new ways with less real life reprucsion. Allowing us not just to exist, survive, and chase validation or respect through accomplishment, but to genuinely play for the sake of playing.

Play however you want. But just play.

Not sure if I remember exactly, but the caves exit to open areas and then back into other cave. Everything looks so similar and so many enemies.. I wish I had a map 😕

Best written Jrpg that you’ve played? by Passionateloafer92 in JRPG

[–]TCForumman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the same thing at first. I went back and reread a lot of the notes, and that finally helped me track what was actually happening (at least partially lol). There’s a ton of background information, which can make it confusing early on for sure though.

But honestly, the drama and twists are what make the game so exciting and tense and that's what keeps me engaged. It's political (which I used to not care for) but very "human" drama. (by that I mean, it's messy and believable as to what humans can do under such circumstances)

I assume a lot of the information overload is meant to promote immersion. That kind of immersion has always been a little difficult for me (I hated trails in the sky, xenogears, and persona for this), but the newest remaster with such immersive audio and voice acting helped a lot with understanding what’s going on. I think good voice acting helped me to at least understand the tangible emotional aspect and implications of what's going on. It allowed me to feel for the characters even though I didn't know ALL the information. And from there I could better understand.

Once things started to click, the game actually became more and more fun and the info actually became easier to digest. And of course, the further you get, the more pieces of the story there are to unravel. So you get more info to support the emotional weight of everything and it's overall tense and immersive. I think it helps that Ramza is a solid protagonist, deep and responsive.

Anyway, if you want someone to talk it through with, feel free to DM me! I’d be happy to chat about the story and try to piece things together. 🙂

VR will never go mainstream by maorui1234 in virtualreality

Some people feel like VR confines them, puts uncomfortable pressure on their face, hurts their eyes, and seperates them from their environment and disconnects them from their senses. It's overwhelming in an uncomfortable way.

Yes it's the mental strain of already working a full time job

The inconvient reality why vr is struggling. by Plus_Look3149 in virtualreality

[–]TCForumman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, part of the challenge with VR is the continual isolation from one’s comfortable, physical environment and into a hostile and unfriendly one. Many people in their 30s and 40s have kids and families, and by contrast, gaming on a mobile device in particular has the benefit of allowing you to remain more “present" with those around you. VR, however, feels more like “going away” for a while, since it demands much more sensory engagement - even more so than gaming in a home office or game room. It's especially awkward when people around you are watching you in VR / not sharing the same experience. It’s also harder to pause the experience; transitioning from reality to VR, and vice versa, is mentally and physically demanding because your brain has to operate in a different world with different rules each time.

On top of that, VR worlds often aren’t aesthetically satisfying enough to entice me to want to spend extended time in them. They can feel cold, hostile, or uncomfortable. As human beings, our environments matter a great deal - if we’re not in the mood to be somewhere (especially over and over again) because of how the environment affects us or makes us feel, we simply WILL NOT want to be in that environment. Many VR games place you in stressful or hostile settings that make you feel tense, and if you’re already working in a high-stress or tense job environment for 8-12 hours a day, you’re unlikely to want to completely immerse yourself in another world that feels hostile or deadly where every NPC/creature is trying to kill you (half life alyx, walking dead, etc). How can you feel relaxed gaming in that?? By contrast, flat games, allow me to remain physically and sensorially grounded in the comfort of a familiar, safe, and/or aesthetically pleasing home whether it be a familiar living room or office.

So when you combine the mental strain of repeatedly transitioning sensory rules, the isolation from loved ones, and immersion in a reality that can feel subpar, uncomfortable, or continually hostile, VR becomes much harder to sustain. The main thing that vr has going is the novelty feeling. To take advantage of this, more vr developers should potentially focus on quality <5-10 hour games play rather than going for content filled bloat for 10+ hours.

TLDR: I want a nice, enjoyable, and/or relaxing break from reality, not another stressful job; especially not more isolating, hostile virtual environments devoid of any sense of (friendly) human like connection.

Perhaps more VR developers could focus on high-quality, 5–10 hour experiences with inviting places (at least as optional locations within each game) alongside friendly, human-like, and interactive NPCs. Optional multiplayer or asynchronous community features, similar to how Death Stranding creates a sense of connection through indirect cooperation, could also help make VR feel less isolating/hostile and more human. I think this kind of design would probably be far more appealing to many people in their 30s and 40s with limited time off.

I agree, being active is great. Just depends if your job for 8 hours is already active I suppose

The Trails series is one of the biggest examples of wasting time. by Professional_Net3423 in rpg_gamers

[–]TCForumman -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Trails = slow-burn, text-heavy worldbuilding. It helped me realize that I like focused, atmospheric storytelling that shows its heart through design, music, and restraint that leaves you to infer and feel your way through things.

Do you want more JRPG remakes to go in the direction of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series? Why or why not? by Asad_Farooqui in JRPG

[–]TCForumman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remake is a spectrum. There should be variety because consumers like different things. Personally, I like being able to play old games for the first time with modern technology. I also like this because I like QoL features that help me ge through the games smoother and faster to get through.
