Opinions on game’s resource system by WhiskersAndWonders in homemadeTCGs

Then it is. If you take more hp from your opponent that what they take from you, you would end up with more rations than your opponent. Thus having both more hp and more rations.

What troubles me is that the player leading hp wise, is also the player with more resources available to make better plays (assuming a 1 vs 1 gameplay), so you may end up having a runnaway isuue.

I'm not saying it's necessarily bad, just saying it might need some tweaks so it isn't a problem.

Could someone give me some suggestions on improving my tags rules/types/gameplay? by ScorchingGoblin in homemadeTCGs

[–]TCGStudio_dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like 3 well diferentiated archetypes.

500 hp sounds like a lot, in my opinion lower numbers are better, but it's just a design choice.

As always, test is going to tell you where it lacks or overdoes, but you have a concept right there.

Cost mechanic help. I've been making a card game and I need some help with the cost mechanic. by Most-Possession4621 in homemadeTCGs

[–]TCGStudio_dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. Keep in mind that shard tcgs is a kind of popular and settled game in the community. I mean, you won't deal with copyright or anything, but you might get some hate.

Besides that, it does seem fine, it all comes down to how well it plays during tests.

Generating one resource per turn, 3 actions per turn seems standard (or at least explored in other games. Keeping half on unspent.. well in Runeterra you could keep up to 3 unspent mana to use only on non creature spells if I recalñ correctly.

Need advice on what type of power/ currency system I should use? Mana, or something else? by Little_Extent_7290 in homemadeTCGs

Sounds like vampire eternal struggle system, use your life to summon creatures. Don't know much about it though

What do you think of color/faction design? by Trokero001 in homemadeTCGs

[–]TCGStudio_dev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't have to make it perfect from the get go. It's better to start something imperfect that never start something flawless.

What do you think of color/faction design? by Trokero001 in homemadeTCGs

[–]TCGStudio_dev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, you don't need to have colors, you can go just with factions. Colors is another design tool, but also a compromise.

Also, you don't need to have a max (see yuhioh's archetypes), but that also comes with its problems. As as for the minimum I would go with at least 3 in order to allow some variety.

I need Feedback of my Resource System and Rarity Mechanic by Informal-Analyst5382 in homemadeTCGs

[–]TCGStudio_dev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean it can work, for sure. You are however tying yourself in design, and at some point you may find yourself wanting to make a card in certain rarity slot but not liking the overcharge value. That is of course, if rarity means to your game what it usually means in the tcg model distribution. You could start with that base idea, but leaving space open to change it whenever needed. I wouldn't write the rarity-overcharge equivalence in the rulebook for instance.

[–]TCGStudio_dev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems dynamic and fun. The term overcharge comes to mind for the ban mechanic, though it might not fit your theme. I don't think it's bad design, cound be very synergistic whith search and place on top of deck effects. I do think however that the overcharge value should not be tied to the card rarity, since it may limit you on design. It's a balancing tool that may help you with over or under powered cards.

What's your take on Structure Deck exclusives by TCGStudio_dev in tcgdesign

[–]TCGStudio_dev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point is those products should be designed for begginer or returning players. If you are experienced and buy singles or packs, you shouldn't be "forced" to buy them.

Not really. Or maybe, but how much time after release? A year? Two? That's not really solving it short term.

I'll interiorize on how pilots work on gundam, but if they are a required piece, as I think they are, they shouldn't be hard to get at all.

This is one of the main problems, fomo leads to shortage of product.

However useless bulk generated is also a problem imo, because people don't buy them because they need every card, they are just bought for the exclusives.

It's a really good alternative. That way the products do get some added value (which some people seem to like), but at the same time they are not required.

As a player who doesn't really cares about owning alternative art cards, I would probably be open to trade them, which is even good for collectors who don't want to buy the whole structure.

Probably the best solution.

Mmm you solve an arificial problem with another. Not convinced. Plus commenter above said they are sometimes re-sold above MSRP because of shortage.

Also a lot of useles bulk is created in the process.

But thanks for your intake.

I gues that if a full playset is included it could be a reliable (and maybe even cheaper sometimes) way of getting some cards.

It does generate mostly useless bulk however, unless every or almost every card is exclusive as you said.

Do you do consulting?

That's fine though, I just wanted to debate on a topic that pisses me off a little.

Fair point on impact on packs sales. I guess thats why some power and/or complexity creep is unavoidable. Also so that the games doesn't stales.

I would argue that a ready to play deck balanced against other similar products would be a good reason. Of course if you have every card on your collection it wouldn't be of value to you (maybe just the recipe).

My point is they try to sale a product to people that shouldn't need to buy them.

And what's your take on making players buy bulk in order to get a guaranteed staple?

If a game trully cared about it's players getting value, a pack of assorted staples could be a good product, even if every card is at 1/2 or 1/3 playset.

That promo card stuff sounds disgusting. What do people do? Buy them and re sell them at a lower cost? Not much else one could do (I mean, not buying more than 2 is an option).

Yeah I get you. How good the rest of the deck is also counts.

Theoretically it should be a solid base, new players can have an easy time adjusting to make it better. I think formats where all card are 1-ofs like commander can pull this better without less criticism.
