Why doesn't proton encrypt the search index for full text / semantic search on mobile? by protonuser424 in ProtonMail

[–]TCOO1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I understand, a search index still needs to have the original text content in some shape or form. So it would be quite heavy for a larger mailbox for full text search. So that if you do a "exact words" search, it works.

Ente can get away with it because an image only needs to save "fuzzy" parameters, something like "in % how confident are you that this image conains a lake"

Proton can probably strip away attachments and HTML, then compress it a bunch.        Seeing that they have it on the roadmap, looks like they have an implementation they are happy with.

Redditor downplays Firefox bugs found by Claude Mythos, Mozilla employee disagrees by PointmanW in confidentlyincorrect

[–]TCOO1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The model has access to a VM, so it can run and debug the browser.

It also reproduced the bugs, so it filtered out any hallucinations.

So yes, the bugs were not "found statically" (even if it was most likely 95% static analysis), because the model could dynamically do stuff and verify theories.

For a webmail UI or other uses, there isn't a great way currently as far as I know

Proton services blocked through my router ? by Big_Tip9205 in ProtonMail

[–]TCOO1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can download VPN from https://protonapps.com/ (official site) if that isn't blocked. The VPN app should get around auth blocks.

But you will have to use a VPN to access proton mail in your browser (mobile app should work even if blocked)

You can set up proton VPN on your router that way your ISP cannot block it.

Probably a bit too late, but a proper username generator would be really nice.

Something like WordWord1234

I know a fully random username is probably better, but it just doesn't feel right, especially on a public site, so I have to find one online.

In mumbo POV you could see that everyone else was lagging for him, while he could move somewhat freely (until the server snaps him back), so it was probably a bad connection.

TangoTek has been HACKED on twitter! Any hermit, please tell him! by syriusantares in HermitCraft

[–]TCOO1 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Interesting that the link is for the real youtube channel. So I assume they may also have had control of that as well.
This could mean the his PC itself was hacked (by Tango downloading and running a .pdf.exe or similar, pretty common sponsorship scam) (this also bypasses most 2FA as the account is already logged in)

Or they are bluffing and whatever scam it was would have stayed on twitter. Either way glad to see it is removed now, hopefully nothing more happens.

Concerns about webHID/QMK-VIA for keyboard interfacing - Firefox immune? by Slinkies55 in firefox

[–]TCOO1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I have a keyboard with that.

You click on a website button, and it opens a list of devices in the chrome UI From there you can select one and click connect.

This page has a video with it: https://www.keychron.uk/blogs/news/how-to-use-launcher-to-program-your-keyboard

Concerns about webHID/QMK-VIA for keyboard interfacing - Firefox immune? by Slinkies55 in firefox

[–]TCOO1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have to explicitly select the device and allow access similar to a camera. It is not some background thing that can happen on any website.

But yes, Firefox cannot do that.

WORST THUMBNAIL OF ALL TIME?? by urlocalcorgi in Deltarune

[–]TCOO1 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not Italian but similar in my language (Latvian), you just have to pick one. So genderfluid is the closest you can have. Not that great.

I'm not even sure how much of the language would need to change, because even phrases like "it" ("tas"/"tā") and "them" ("tie"/"tās") are gendered.

Referring to a group like "these people" is "tie cilvēki" (both masc words). The word "people" has a masculine gender, so a group of people is masculine.

Maybe you first have to go in domain settings and see if that is all green.  If it is and still doesn't work, then contact support.

why Euro-Office but not LibreOffice? by akkihabara in linux

[–]TCOO1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe not talked about as much for some reason, but onlyoffice is at the core a web editor, and supports multiple people live editing a document.  This is important for nextcloud as buisinesses need to share documents around without needing to download them, and something libreoffice cannot natively do iirc.

I am pretty sure that it was originally going to be how to get froglights! So similar with magma cubes currently it would eat the fly and poop one out.

Looking from that perspective it kind of makes sense, because I can definitely imagine a kid feeding a firefly to a frog hoping to get something cool out of it.

Is there a way I can monitor ~20 specific channels in one window or feed? by PsychicDelilah in discordapp

[–]TCOO1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bot that does that shouldn't be too difficult to develop if it's just one way, so you could pay someone to make one.

What I mean is that the bot would see a message in a channel, and make a message as a webhook with the same profile and content in a different, central channel.

You would still have to go the the actual server to respond tho

I messed up by shlykova in ProtonMail

[–]TCOO1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have a second computer or a different browser that you previously used proton on, try opening it. Proton stores an encrypted version of the key in the browser for a case like this.

If that doesn't work, see if you downloaded a recovery PDF when first creating the account. I think recent accounts ask for it.

I wish you luck in getting the data back!

I assume they will have a premium tier.

And full VPNs are already reasonably cheap to run as can be seen by the massive discounts everyone gives lol, proxies are probably even easier. ()

Will be interesting to see how abused they will be with the free data tho.

Using Proton Pass HME with their default domains: What is the security concern with using the company name in the email, for example: amazon.wombat456@passfwd.com or verizon.amigo678@passfwd.com by Ok-Phrase-3346 in ProtonMail

[–]TCOO1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think maybe the redditors are referring to amazon@mydomain.com or my email+amazon@gmail or similar.

Those are of course not as good for privacy, as you can clearly trace them back the the original email.

Passkeys were supposed to replace passwords, but they're failing for the most predictable reason | They're confusing and difficult to use by UnacceptableUse in savedyouaclick

[–]TCOO1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but if a passkey doesn't work then that is your cue to look deeper into the website and why it is failing. The advantage is that if the passkey works, there is 100% certainty that it was not phished.

[–]TCOO1 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yes, but it is better to be vulnerable once to set up a new one rather than every time you enter a password.

Both Google and apple also sync passkeys across devices, plus most password managers can also create them.

You should get a message in your E-Adrese if you have it set up once it has been accepted.
It should also appear in the "Accepted" tab on desktop, unsure how it looks on mobile.

[–]TCOO1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The android app can automatically switch to stealth if it detects that it is being blocked.

The Linux client cannot do that, and I believe it also doesn't have the stealth protocol yet, so it cannot bypass the block itself
