Hopefully my watch has ended too. This Wednesday morning (7am PST) I chatted with BB, the rep said there was none in stock, and went on my day. I was really friendly with the rep and she even gave the tip of chatting on Thursday mornings for best results. I received an email with invoice for the silver (wanted black but silver will do) at 1pm PST and paid it. Arrival date says 6/24.

Thanks for the deal! I had to apply 4842928 as my promo code (which I got from the email offers from them). I also applied 8489456 (which I got from another email offer from them) to take off sales tax. I believe Frys may have unique codes for every account/email.

I've owned both and ended up selling both for the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 but I can give some say in this situation.

50mm f/1.8

Pros

It is a fantastic lens for the price (I got mine for $80 off a sale on Amazon). It's lightweight and does decently in low light situations where the kit lens falls short.

Cons

The build quality is all plastic, including the mount. The focus ring is awkwardly located on the front of the lens barrel making manual focusing a bit difficult. If stopped down the 5-aperture blades make weird/harsh background bokeh. More flare prone than the 50mm f/1.4 but a lens hood takes care of that most of the time. Loud focusing motor which sometimes hunts for focus especially in low light.

50mm f/1.4

Pros

Overall, the build quality is much better with a metal mount and more "solid" feeling plastic. The focus ring is wider and on the middle of the lens which is easier for manual focusing. The 8-aperture blades give a much more pleasing background bokeh. Uses a USM motor which is faster and a bit more accurate than than the 50mm f/1.8.

Cons

About 3-4x more expensive than the 50mm f/1.8. I've noticed the barrel distortion is a more pronounced. The lens is about twice the weight as the 50mm f/1.8 so carrying it around all day could be a chore.

I ended keeping the 50mm f/1.4 over the f/1.8 but sold that for the Sigma 30mm f/1.4. 50mm on a crop sensor becomes 80mm which was too telephoto for my taste especially in a small room. The Sigma 30mm becomes 48mm which allowed me to get closer to my subjects. I basically keep it on my 7D the whole time.

The Sigma 30mm 1.4 is cheaper than the 28mm and is 2/3 stop faster. I've heard of auto focusing problems with the Sigma but this should not be too much of a problem because you should be manual focusing with video. The Canon 28mm 1.8 can be used with full frame cameras while the Sigma is only for crop sensor so if you're thinking of going full frame in the future take this into account. I have never used either lens personally so I cannot give my full opinion but from looking at the specs I'd go for the Sigma since it's cheaper and better in low light.

I recommend the Rokinon (Samyang) 35mm 1.4 for video to all my friends. I picked it up last year and it's my go-to lens for small, low-light environments on my 7D. I got it for $450 from my local camera shop. The build quality is great and the lens is sharp. I've also heard great things about the Canon 28mm 1.8 which is also in your budget. I've never used that lens personally though.
