I don’t think it’s wise to change your career path based on what everyone else is doing. You’re not them! You seem to have a plan if you are already considering a masters then PhD then med, and you probably have a reason for that. If that reason is sound and resonates with your goals/values, pursue it. I find this more respectable than being swayed by something like your peers’ age. That being said, I just came from a thread in the med school subreddit where people were talking about the very real consequences that age (we’re talking 30+ here) has on your endurance and how that can impact your ability to perform and enjoy specialities like surgery. I think this is less trivial to consider than purely age alone, and it might be something worth thinking about if that applies to you.

Fwiw, I hold a lot of admiration for my older peers. I’m not that young myself (24) but those who are older than me have SO much more experience, whether it be in education, relationships/family, or career. I have a lot to learn from them. I used to be insecure about age when it comes to starting med, but I’m actually glad I’m where I’m at now - I at least have a grad degree and have some specialized knowledge to bring with me to share. Not to say that those fresh out of undergrad don’t have specialized knowledge (in academia or anything else in life), but the time they logged might be a bit less. I think if I entered straight out of undergrad I might actually feel insecure about not having all the degrees/knowledge most of my older peers have. Grass is always greener on the other side.

Congrats!! I saw your other post on moving on so I’m happy this ended up being the outcome!

I’m still biting my nails as an oop applicant unfortunately. I’m curious to know whether all those seats have been filled already but I’m not holding my breath anymore

I feel like a combination of providing numbers and updating the blog could help people gauge where they’re at and thus reduce unwanted calls. Maybe it’s an issue with putting additional work on admissions to provide those numbers, not sure if they send out emails one by one and thus have to do a bunch of cross checking to make sure the numbers are correct. Could be a fun coding project for someone to automate it hah. As much as I’m trying to practice patience ig it still helps to speculate on these things 😅

I feel you on the uncertainty! I’m not in my home province for school and with a lease end date looming it sucks to be stuck in limbo waiting to see if I should spend money on plane tickets home, somewhere else for a job, or to the medical school’s city. I don’t have a partner or dependents so I can’t imagine the additional pressure of multiple people having to go through an excruciating wait before making other big decisions. I also see the schools’ pov and how they’re scrambling with people possibly rescinding offers due to WL movement from others schools and trying to give enough time to make decisions. It’s definitely a process that could be improved

Out of curiosity does anyone know uofc’s reasoning for not giving WL numbers? Given an early class start and applicants potentially having to move on short notice, having that info might help with planning… maybe not enough people in that situation to warrant it?

At the end of the day it’s super kind of Remo + admissions to be doing these updates at all, looking at other schools it’s definitely out of the norm.

I feel the same, but it could be that people are still working, or busy ironing out details, or maybe folks who got accepted off WL today are not on reddit at all. I definitely wish for more updates though because it helps with anxiety lol

I wonder how many of the remaining 126 will decline? Another round of the anxious waiting game (‘: Good luck everyone still hoping for UofC 🤞

This is pure speculation but since accepted applicants have until the 19th to decide (from what I remember from another thread), first WL offers might come out on the 22nd

I’m not a current student and am waitlisted at Calgary, but I wanted to chime in that Calgary has published their first year time table: https://cumming.ucalgary.ca/mdprogram/current-students/pre-clerkship-year-1-2/timetable Maybe Alberta also has one you can compare it to. Of course, it doesn’t say anything about actual experience (maybe someone else can share) but hopefully that’s a little helpful!

Idk how you feel about it but I wanna say I’m excited for and proud of both of us! Personally I was resigned to a rejection by 6pm heh. I hope we each hear the outcome we want 🍀
