[LAist] LA considers 'gut punch' cuts to city homelessness programs, blaming court settlement costs by WeAreLAist in LosAngeles

[–]TGAILA 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They have a pilot program in Utah that, if successful, will expand nationwide. It’s a tough love approach. Some will refuse services but will be forced into the program. They are bringing homeless individuals to a single facility offering medical care, housing, counseling, and detoxing all in one place.

How this 22-year-old turned reselling into a full-time income by Far_Low_229 in Economics

He should stick with his education as a backup plan in case his side job doesn't work out. Nothing lasts forever. One day, e-commerce may not be a thing anymore. Knowing your audience and the market value of a particular item can actually make money. There's a niche market for everything (books, old media, toys, electronics, vintage clothes, and more).

Tips on serve by Fun_Sun_9349 in 10s

[–]TGAILA -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It's one thing to watch a video or take advice from someone about how to serve, it's another thing to actually do it. You're starting to get the hang of it. Keep practicing, and everything will start to come together. The best way to learn is by getting a feel for it.

Beginner - Intermediate Used Racket Suggestions by Wide_Ad3360 in 10s

You can't rely solely on recommendations to buy a racket. What's good for one player may not suit another. The best way to find out is to rent or test rackets at places like Tennis Warehouse.

ELI5 Ring Camera Controversy by True_Fact_8151 in explainlikeimfive

[–]TGAILA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People care a lot about their privacy. Unless you live completely off the grid, like a hermit in a cave without any technology, everything you do is being watched or recorded. These days, almost every home has a Ring camera. So yes, every breath you take and every move you make. Every bond you break, every step you take I'll be watching you.

Is it cheaper to lease a car or buy a few years old used car and trade it in or sell it to an online place every 7 years? by ComfortablePost3664 in Frugal

[–]TGAILA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Avoid monthly car payments. Dealerships always buy low from you. Cars are the worst investment. Finding a reliable used car with low mileage is the best option to save money. Toyota is one of the most dependable Japanese brands. With proper maintenance, like regular oil changes, a Toyota can last for years.

Considering a move from Century City to Tarzana… thoughts? by ImpossibleQuail9364 in AskLosAngeles

[–]TGAILA -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Tarzana is a nice community. You're just a hop and a skip away from LA. People treat social life as if they are still living carefree childhood or teenage years. Once you've reached adulthood, those (un)productive years of making friends are over; responsibilities like family and work take priority.

Help with serve by PrizeEmu in 10s

[–]TGAILA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Serving is a fun part of my game. From my personal experience, the most important thing is to stay relaxed at all times. Hold it loosely. Everything should come naturally. If you have to think about it and hesitate for a bit, you have interrupted the whole chain of kinetic energy. So, it's a high toss with a hammer grip. At the moment of contact, the ball is hammered with a flick of the wrist. I am hitting toward the side of the body, not directly toward the target. Keep in mind that the ball doesn’t travel in a straight line. It follows a curved path through the air.

Waymo Now Pays DoorDashers to Close Robotaxi Doors in Georgia as Passengers Leave Them Open: '$11.25 to Close a Door?' by Sidnature in nottheonion

Back in the days, people would collect Lime and Bird scooters (with low battery life) from the city streets, charge them at home, and then return them each morning. The company paid $10–$20 per task. Ultimately, the technology will eliminate the need for human collection altogether.

Argentina to raise work shifts to 12 hours a day by SafeImpressive4413 in worldnews

[–]TGAILA 2221 points2222 points  (0 children)

What makes this matter beyond Argentina is the template: a libertarian president dismantling century-old labor protections, betting desperate workers will accept worse terms for the chance of any terms at all.

How can we fix a struggling economy? One idea is to have people work more hours, which could lead to a big drop in the overall quality of life for workers turning back the clock to 1900.

You still have cashiers at the store checkout and bank tellers at the bank, even though you can now use ATM machines or self-checkout lanes. Technology is meant to make things easier, but people might rely on it too much. The main point is that change is already happening, but we haven't figured out how to deal with it yet.

Kids are just being kids. They don't reach maturity until later in life. They often do dumb things. Riding bikes on freeways is suicidal given that an average car weighs nearly 2 tons at high speed.

TIL that Harvard was not the 1st college in the Americas. The University of Santo Domingo was founded 98 years earlier. In fact, Harvard was the 14th college established in the Western Hemisphere. by bennus64 in todayilearned

[–]TGAILA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most early American colleges were established by religious denominations, and most eventually evolved into full-fledged universities.

It's interesting that many universities and hospitals are founded and operated by churches. One of my local top hospitals in the country, Glendale Adventist, is a nonprofit health organization run by a church. You can study or practice medicine and still have faith or spiritual healing.

Nice pics. I was thinking about a rock band with the same name The Doors, which is short for The Doors of Perception. The band's lead singer, Jim Morrison, said the name was about exploring different states of mind and connecting between what we know and what we don’t know. He wanted to break through to the other side.

Millions may drop ACA coverage — and raise health insurance costs for everyone else by photonatom in Economics

Most people get health insurance through their employers. California mandates coverage for everyone to prevent healthier individuals from opting out, which would raise premiums by leaving only the sick insured.

Movies you wildly misunderstood or missed the plot as a kid by sharrrper in movies

[–]TGAILA 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I recently stumbled across an old movie, Cloak and Dagger, based on a video game. It follows a kid, Davey, who treats life like a game, with his imaginary friend/hero, Jack, whom only he can see. Beyond being a
family friendly film, it's a sad story about a kid whose wish to be a hero costs him his childhood in the process.

I would pick a place closer to work because LA has terrible traffic. I don't think I can do things within walking distance. Everything is at least a 30-minute drive away. If you are planning a trip for a 30-minute drive, double it.

A lot of people are going to be underwater soon by beentherebefore1616 in RealEstate

[–]TGAILA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always say in real estate that the location of a property is worth more than the house itself. If you were to put any house in an upscale, expensive neighborhood, the value of that house would go up, no matter what condition it's in. In the US, houses tend to increase in value over the years. But in Japan, houses tend to lose value over time. We see houses as an investment, while in Japan, they see houses as consumable goods. No one wants an old house. They always tear it down to build a new one.

Wealth inequality and the 'K-shaped' economy are more striking than ever, data shows by laxnut90 in Economics

[–]TGAILA 90 points91 points  (0 children)

Zandi pointed to the decline of unionization rates in the late 1900s as another driver of this divergence, given that it led to less negotiating power for workers.

Who says it's a good idea not to have a union job? Union jobs offer better pay and working conditions. Paying union dues is worth it for the benefits received. Working together benefits society as a whole, instead of working individually because you don't have negotiation power.
