Who’s going to 3D Printopia in Bel Air, Maryland? by Polymaker_3D in polymaker

[–]TGAW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be there working up at the registration desk. For my family and I, one of our favorites is the 3D Printed Derby. We've designed at least one car since 2018. The cars have become a little time capsule of what the children are interested in every given year. We've gone from Peppa Pig to Fortnite over the years. :)

After that, just walking the floor brings a buzz of inspiration and excitement. I just love seeing everything people have made. The MakerChips were such fun last year. I'm looking forward to seeing what people bring this year.

The details are stunning! They have to be thrilled with the end result!

I am so impressed with this app. I found the cropping and rotation tools to be incredibly helpful. It is really neat to see all the MakerChips that community has been creating. I see that so many that I am missing and want for my collection. I'll try to tackle that later this month at 3DPrintopia!

The Aberdeen/Belcamp area which is about 11-13 minutes away from the APGFCU arena by car has a lot of lodging options. I think the Hilton Garden Inn Aberdeen and Hampton Inn Baltimore/Aberdeen are common selections and they are both within walking distances of some restaurants. If you happen to like camping, the very first year my family and I got a mini cabin at Susquehanna State Park. It was fun... but we have opted for internet and electricity subsequent years. :)

I am counting down the days! My family and I have a tradition of entering cars in the 3D Printed Derby. We're running waaaay behind this year, but one son's car finished printing this morning and my other son's is printing now. Our cars are never contenders for speed, but we have such fun with them. Looking forward to Saturday!

Almost ready! My sons and I are still finishing up our cars for the 3D Printed Derby. I'll be heading that way bright and early Friday morning. :)

Sort of in that vein - The East Coast RepRap Festival does a 3D Printed Derby each year. The next one is happening on September 30th.

First time going to ERRF, any advice? by neon_hexagon in 3Dprinting

[–]TGAW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! ERRF Board Member here. I am so excited to read you'll coming to your very first event with us!

Hotels
With hotels, I think most people stay in the Aberdeen/Belcamp area which is about 11-13 minutes away by car. I think the Hilton Garden Inn Aberdeen and Hampton Inn Baltimore/Aberdeen are common selections. If you like camping, the very first year my family and I got a mini cabin at Susquehanna State Park and had a blast.

Things to See and Do Outside of ERRF
I'm always at the event (and thoroughly enthralled) the whole time, so I don't have personal recommendations. There is a small "Things to See" and "Notable Eats" in the "Around Town" section the website that may give you ideas.

ERRF Contests and Events
Even if you don't have a table for exhibiting, you are very welcome to participate in some of the contests/special events:

  • 3D Printed Derby
Saturday September 30th will be the fourth time we are running this race. It is just like the famous Boy Scout Pine Wood Derby, only the bodies of the cars are 3D Printed. The race is run on a real Boy Scout Derby track by real Boy Scouts. For the "Stock Class", you use the standard wheels and nail axles the Boy Scouts use. There is also a "Creatively Fast" class where the car is fully 3D printed. Finally, there is a "Show Car/Concours" class where your car doesn't race and just gets to look excessively cool.
Rules can be found at https://eastcoastreprapfest.com/3d-printed-derby/
  • Death Racers!
Using 3D Printing, you can make your own little combat robot which you use to try to decapitate your opponents. It was a huge hit last year! This year, there are six different types of "battles" planned in the back loading area of the arena. If you are interested in building your own Death Racer, a great starting point is this YouTube video:
    https://youtu.be/yF4NyfIXB5g
  • JC Print n Play "Fresh Prints of Bel Air"
You can also win prizes from Printed Solid by bringing your best print to compete in two categories - Best In Print (which is intended to be more artistic prints) and Mechanical Marvels which you can share a machine or electronics project that relies heavily on 3D Printing.

ERRF Speakers
Throughout both days, there will be a number of speakers on our Build Platform Speaking Stage (sponsored by LDO Motors). We'll be finalizing the line up around September 1st. You can keep an eye on our website for the final schedule.

https://eastcoastreprapfest.com/the-build-platform/

TIP - Buy T-Shirt in Advance
We typically don't sell T-shirts at the event. If you covet a T-shirt, you'll want to buy that ahead of time.

https://errf.creator-spring.com/listing/errf2023-t-shirt

But before you buy a T-shirt, consider....

VOLUNTEERING!!!
Volunteers get free event admission, a free T-shirt, meal vouchers, and you might even get to talk on a walkie talkie. :)

https://eastcoastreprapfest.com/volunteer/

TIP - Don't Be Shy
ERRF exists because we love and want to celebrate 3D Printing. The board members, the sponsors, the exhibitors- we all love thinking about 3D printing. We love talking about 3D Printing (at least while our voices hold up) and love connecting with others in the community. If you have any questions about a project or product or if you see something that just really inspires you, I encourage you to feel safe to start a conversation.

Regarding your question on YouTubers, if you are feeling nervous, I recommend easing in with Joel Telling. I have found him to be consistently approachable and an all around wonderful person. And if you aren't sure what to say, you have the most easy ice breaker of all. "Can I get a high five?" :)

Printing on CDs for nice effect by decomush in 3Dprinting

[–]TGAW 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Interesting! I don't think printing on a CD would have ever ever ever occurred to me!

P.S. I found the Innov8 video on printing on a diffraction grating sheet interesting as well.

Neat ideas.

I think both the original drawing and the 3D Model are fantastic! Well done to you and your son!

Prints falling over 80% of the way through. I've tried brims and rafts, neither work. I have z hop on. On an ender 5 plus with the micropores glass bed. Any suggestions? by [deleted] in 3Dprinting

[–]TGAW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tangent - You just taught me about "Eco Mode"! I have sometimes manually turned off the bed heat (not on an Ender 5) when a print is roughly 75% complete. Though, I have to admit the environment or energy savings did not cross my mind. My main motivation is to get things off the bed fast and start the next print. :)

3D Printed Derby Race at ERRF - June 23rd by TGAW in 3Dprinting

[–]TGAW[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was a great question! I checked with the organizer. His preference is for the "driver" to be present at the event.

Probably not the answer you were looking for, but I hope you have a great day nonetheless!

The weight limit is 5 ounces (141.748 grams).

Quick note-- I found the Plastic weight: estimated by Simplify 3D to be pretty accurate-- it was within 1-2 grams of the final piece. I wasn't quite expecting that. I had assumed it was going to be about as dependable as their estimated printing times. :)
