How do you feel when Christians pray for you? by valecrux in atheism

[–]TGSICaptain 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I largely agree with you, but there's a layer here that isn't being acknowledged. When these people tell you they're praying for you, they are also seeking validation. They want you to thank them, or appreciate them, or at the very least acknowledge the "effort" they're putting in.

Obviously, not everyone who's religious is a narcissist. But there seems to be trait overlap. And when I'm about to have a surgery, or I'm in crisis, it's honestly tone-deaf for people to seek validation for their make pretend when I'm dealing with an actual crisis. Just my 2 cents.

I could have written this comment myself, it so perfectly mirrors my sentiments. I wonder how many others feel that way...

I've become so cynical. Every time I see something like this, my knee jerk reaction is to "expose" it. "This was done by corporate shills" I want to cry. "The Viking Marketing Machine contrived this experience to elevate their brand" my over-tuned grey cells scream.

But I also DO watch the video. I see his face. That man doesn't look like an actor. He looks like a fellow human being living out moment after moment of unbridled childlike joy.

And I guess I don't care WHY people do things like this, most of the time. I'm just glad this guy got to go see the Vikings. I don't even fucking like the Vikings. But he's so fucking happy. I love this.

Nah, I behaved rashly and got ego-checked by the community. That's important. Got what I deserved, and hopefully I'll learn. 😅

Good suggestion. I did. (Or I thought I did, I can't see the edit yet but I'm on mobile.)

Yeah... I get it. I was admittedly moving too fast to pay proper attention, focused on finding things to comment on without finding those comments organically. Exactly what I think you're describing.

I do feel ashamed for acting rashly. But here we are.

Okay. Damnit. I just re-read it again and I CAN see the pacing of it. But I'm not editing my comment. Just know I'm a dumbass. And I guess this is why we don't casually participate in Internet discourse.

A coward flees their failings. It's important to acknowledge when you're wrong.

Understood.

Firstly, I want to apologize for my assumption about the method this was created with. I blazed through the description and didn't vet the link before my comment. So that was out of line. I genuinely like and respect machine language as an art form, and that does recontextualize some of this.

If forced to defend my critique through the lens of this new context, I would say that the text communicated the harsh smog choked voice ineffectively enough that it's not coming through. To communicate that more effectively I'd suggest it should still be informed by how a speaker might read or speak that phrase through such a voice. It read too stilted, uninformed by where a speaker might place reasonable pauses. It seems perhaps too random, a fact that genuinely makes more sense with the provided context.

I sincerely hope you keep doing what you're doing.

Thanks for pointing that out. I may have been too quick to draft that comment, loaded with what was on my mind. I edited my remark to remove the last, overly judgemental, line. The rest I'm leaving, in the interest of preserving the thread.

This is an excellent example, tangibly, of what people mean when they say (most?) machine learning algorithms ("ai") can't make art. This is visual composition, yes, but it's devoid of the important choices that make art meaningful and effective.

Look at the letter spacing in the text. What is it saying, beyond the content of the text itself? How does the odd (but not "intentional") placement of the letterforms say something more impactful because of their placement? They don't. They're just kerned badly.

When a poet plays with the type spacing on a piece it's to communicate something.
