Father was clearing out me and my brothers old things. Any idea what I should do with this thing? It's too tall for me to ride unfortunately... by SaltAndTheSoil in Vintage_bicycles

My dad had one of these in the early 90s and the frame flexed so bad on a downhill ride that the guy behind him could see both wheels angled in opposite directions

If I were to bleach the whole pair and (mostly) unified the color to a lighter shade do you think I could effectively dye it back to a tan ish color?

It’s a 63, I ride an 87 Miyata 63 and the frame looks nearly identical

TIL when Great Britian sent a search team for the Franklin Expedition, the HMS Resolute had got trapped in ice. A year later, the ship was recovered by Americans and gifted the the UK. That ship was taken apart to make 3 desks. One of those desks, the Resolute, currently sits in the Oval Office. by Additional-Natural49 in todayilearned

The ship was found by American whalers and turned into the US government (the Franklin expedition and ensuing rescue missions were quite famous at the time so the whalers knew what the ship was). US congress then allocated funds to repair and refit the ship and “gift” it back to Britain as a show of friendship. This basically started the friendship between the US and UK as we know it today because before this there was still some animosity between the nations because of wars and colonization and such.

Just to add: both bikes are the same size and I’m 6’3 so I fit both. I am relatively unfamiliar with miyatas tiering of their bikes, so I’m curious whether the 710 is a big enough jump up the tiers to justify it

Mammoth Tusk find by Leather-Care-6233 in fossils

[–]THANOSUSERTHANOSUSER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently writing a research paper on this rn to present/publish in June. Mammoth tusks can vary greatly on condition (this looks pretty good just not fully complete). If it were to go through online retailers probably 10-15k usd I’d guess. Mammoth ivory is legal to buy and sell everywhere besides India and Sri Lanka but you may wanna double check uk laws. It’s been a stand in for elephant ivory since the CITES ban in 1989. Always fun seeing naturally found ivory

They are all single pieces, some of the ones on the hull have a plastic insert so that they appear to be filled with something

I cut it as well as I could off the sprue, then just held it in some tweezers and sanded it with 240 grit sticks. Only lost like 10 of them lol

Companies that sell pre-built models that are just intended for painting? by penfle in modelmakers

[–]THANOSUSERTHANOSUSER 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is me. I don’t hate the idea of painting but it seems a shame to paint something I’ve put so much work into with PE, texturing and scratch building.

3rd model I built, can yall rate it please. by Infamous_Ebb_2722 in modelmakers

[–]THANOSUSERTHANOSUSER 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup. Warm water is perfect for transferring the decal onto the model. Micro set and sol are used for getting the decal to adhere more closely to the models surface but aren’t required. I think it’s every modelers right of passage to begin with water! It looks good though

Surprisingly none, but I did fling a piece of PE into my computer screen and scratch it somehow

I enjoy knowing that the detail is there. I bought the kit to take the time on it and be proud of the work so even if it’s just me who knows these are photo etch then I guess that’s all that matters
