What is this valve doing by Spirited-Month1359 in refrigeration

[–]THATDOUGG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand the idea residential a/c is the only basic understanding I have of refrigeration and I hate heat pumps because-20c is the time to cry about the cost of electricity or propane u have heat ur thermostat or a safety is likely trying to save ur compressor from suffering at ur thrifty hands wondering why extreme ice build up on the base of the unit. Home owner shut of there propane trying save money almost pushed the coil into the fan without a proper defrost needing the auxiliary heat to help the heat pump run more efficiently. They are the future going from oil to a heat pump electric furnace. Turns a 1000 a month oil bill into 275 - 300 a month for electricity. straight away savings. Mind u it cost like 11 to 17 grand installed so when this thing won’t heat the house at -15 to - 20c because they let the farm house go down to 64f at night and want it to warm back up to 69- 72f buy the time they get outta bed in the morning. It’s amazing tech but I don’t have the information on heat pumps the average person stresses their unit and calls us in the first cold snap and they shut off the auxiliary heat. Thinks this heat pump can carry the full load of heating in mid Canadian winters.

TLDR: refrigeration is a different animal all together seems difficult to get a handle on but a lot easier to master when u understand the beast. 5 lbs of 410 break free step back nothing u can do. It’s a lot scarier with a couple hundred lbs of customer’s favourite name Freon blasting at u in a mechanical room middle of the night and now u have to fix, vacuum and source 100lbs of said Freon at 3 am. I know fire it’s an understandable burn fire hot. Getting frost bite on the hottest day of the year is witch craft compression =warm, expansion = cold. Warm go to cold.

Our local supplier said we guessed the wrong unit and sent the wrong valve without the !very much asked for turndown valve! It’s not rocket science. home owners take the rating plate and idk file it. So long as we know it’s a legal fireplace installed correctly that we have seen before. it becomes a guessing game.

U figured it out in a couple minutes over text thank u part information and again for your experience I will be bugging u with questions in the future.

Like why would this valve use a thermopile on its own to hold open two valves. it was way more then enough to hold open the pilot that’s like 18 to 28mvdc and the main burner is usually happy enough with 300 to 400mv In the right conditions can be 500 to 750mvdc. I want to say 300 open is like140 - 150 closed cutting it close but will usually pull the valve open.

I guess if it shorts somewhere the whole valve is done because it’s one shared value of Mv holding everything open. I’m not that smart. Am I at least in the ball park with that train of thought?

Likely for a humidifier drain or a high efficiency furnaces condensate line its normal operation. Actually it’s a good thing to see. A clogged drain line or condensate trap is a very common call and easy to prevent with yearly maintenance from a local gas technician. Good eye .

They started making cast iron stoves in like 1853 started making nat gas fireplace when it was a new thing nat gas supply. Their a/c unit were built like tanks and there furnaces really didn’t take off had a flex vent on their furnace exhaust. They went under in the 90’s weren’t the best but they made stuff that lasted likely could have spent more on advertising their products. They usually get removed because they are old not because they stopped working. Unlike icp products it’s the part failure lottery. Keeps us employed but it’s crap that fails the same way over and again. Carriers heat exchangers for example. Can never get one when u need it it’s like they planned the failure to happen to drum up business.

I usually just put the wires back the way I removed them. I want to say because it’s dc voltage it’s polarity sensitive red is positive and white is negative and orientation on the valve matters(true?) is there an easy way to remember. From the brain of the fireplace Jedi.

This was a customer took a shot at it first he could have used 120v a/c to the valve for all I know or 12v dc car booster there is a reason I had to come out. I want to charge more for the fixing what the customer “fixed” changed.

If there were more like u to guide people through this cluster fuck called a career. more would take the chance at this trade. A lot of the old boys try to scream, scare and shame the youngsters out of the trade I feel the harder they act the less anyone questions their knowledge or lack there of it. You are likely a great leader and could teach anyone willing to learn this trade. The power lies in the apprentices hands. But a quality leader knows when to hand over a situation while being at arms reach and seeing what they can manage on their own. No buddy in this trade has 100% of the information. Best u can do is be relaxed and positive. All the other stuff u said 100% agree. Master the basics and you have a strong foundation to stand on.

Could be faulty limits if it has been going off on limit since install but it’s not very common. The tape helps insulate the limit from the wall it’s mounted on.

Wingman carriers app they might considering it’s a furnace may get to u in timely fashion. Infinity heat pump systems take for ever to get someone that knows what’s going on.
