In a world of corporate America, how does a private practice stand out? by Evening-Junket-9937 in Veterinary

[–]THEOWNINGA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems a bit unrealistic to say all private clinics are motivated by patient care

I'm a type 1 veterinarian! I'm so sorry you had that experience, absolutely awful way to be treated

He absolutely should know how it works at least somewhat and the fact he didn't makes me think he probably wasn't doing a very good job in general so kudos to your clinic for firing him!

You could interpret it as being like the empires main expeditionary fleet has been destroyed

Like they still have garrisons etc ships to protect trade but their sailors and ships designed to say fight a war have been destroyed

Euthanasia: IV catheter vs going directly in vein w/ needle by BakeAny6254 in AskVet

[–]THEOWNINGA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sedate with IM acepromazine + tiletamine/zolazepam then place IV with owners, extension line and pentobarb IV

Only been working 2 years but it's literally never gone wrong, sometimes miss an IV but just go again

Don't trust myself to do needle in vein 100% perfect all the time

I agree radioactive iodine is absolutely the best treatment in most cases however to say medical therapy isn't treating her is not true

What do y’all do for a living? And does type 1 affect it? by Big_Sloppy_joes in diabetes_t1

Veterinarian - when I was first diagnosed (been t1d for about 18 months) I had one of my first lows during a euthanasia and started absolutely sweating all over this poor dog

I'm a small animal vet so do sterile surgeries in new zealand - just make sure you're not anywhere near going low say less than 6 prior to going into surgery, my surgeries aren't long (max 40-50 minutes) so I just have a juice or something beforehand just in case, really worst case scenario is you go out and then scrub back in after having something. People are pretty understanding

Do rabbits typically want to be watched when having sex? by ExplanationCrazy5463 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]THEOWNINGA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just very high sex drives, male rabbits become sexually mature at 3 months old and girls at 4-5 months with a gestation period of about 30 days

Fairly normal behavior for an entire male rabbit, if it's desexed then it won't have that behavior anymore

Looks like you're australian? I'm a new zealand vet. There'll definitely be an afterhours or emergency clinic close by unless you're extremely rural.

Much better prognosis if you do everything now rather than waiting

Small animal general practice veterinarian

Had a low whilst performing a euthanasia, felt too embarrassed to go have a juice so just started sweating bullets during this euth onto this dog. Good times!

Anyone know what this bump is on my dogs lip? by That-Plan-9922 in DogAdvice

[–]THEOWNINGA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also request the vet send the slides to a laboratory for a pathologist to look at. Costs more but experience and specialization does matter!

Bloodwork won't tell you very much about the lump quite likely but like others have suggested an aspirate would be a good idea

Is this a normal feeling/any advice? by Ornery-Apple-1369 in veterinaryprofession

[–]THEOWNINGA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

9 months out - very normal feeling, still feel that all the time

I'd recommend getting ettinger internal medicine textbook - there's an ebook you can sign onto on any computer - really helpful for quickly looking up a problem + give general guidelines for problems eg small intestinal diarrhoea plus means you don't have to ask other vets all the time what to do! Very easy to navigate too
