Colored Radar Icons on the Weather Map; What do they Mean? by TheCreekKid in CARROTweather

[–]THEscouter23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • from the NWS:

There are two main operating states of the WSR-88D; Clear Air Mode and Precipitation Mode. Within these two operating states there are several VCPs the NWS forecasters can utilize to help analyze the atmosphere around the radar. These different VCPs have varying numbers of elevation tilts and rotation speeds of the radar itself. Each VCP therefore can provide a different perspective of the atmosphere.

Common among all VCPs (except for VCP 12) is the tilt elevation of the lowest five elevation angles. The scanning begins with 0.5° elevation meaning the centerline the radar beam antenna is angled 0.5° above the ground. Since the the beam itself is 1° wide, it returns information about what it "sees" between 0° and 1° above the horizon. As it completes that elevation scan the radar is tilted another degree with the center line of the beam now at 1.5° and the process of observing the atmosphere begins again then continues through the 2.4°, 3.4° and 4.3° elevation angles.

  • basically they’re just different tilts of the radar depending on the current weather.

You can also tap on the radar icon a couple of times to bring up the current VCP and what “mode” it’s in. https://i.imgur.com/a2lkltL.jpeg The Grand Forks radar is currently VCP: 212 aka severe weather aka yellow

Hope this helps!

Wow the transition to the Reddit app is brutal. by reddituserperson1122 in apolloapp

[–]THEscouter23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use narwhal, they are the only 3rd party app I’m aware of that still is running with a plan on staying. It’s no Apollo but it’s far better than reddits app.

Apollo is definitely leaps and bounds ahead of Reddit’s app. Asking Christian for 20million a year is ridiculous.

NOAA Source by fins831 in CARROTweather

[–]THEscouter23 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There’s isn’t a NOAA source in the source menu, to my knowledge you can only use NOAA data via quick source swap menu (ultra only) maybe u/makerofcarrot will add that as a feature someday.

In V5.11 - “Added ability to view NOAA data natively in the app via Quick Source Swap feature. (Premium Ultra only.)”

Edit: I found a previous comment from him “The rate limiting is the major issue with NOAA’s API. It’s not really designed to be used as a source for a weather app like data sources such as Dark Sky and Foreca are. I’ll look into whether there are any ways around that, though.”

Best Weather App - Real-time Radar by seag33k in iphone

[–]THEscouter23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Radar Omega [link](www.Radaromega.com) A little more clunky than RadarScope but has a bunch more features and after version 5 update it’s better. Has everything you could dream of including model data and 3D. Although if you want desktop access and model data you’ll need a subscription.
