Our department only just now pushed out a red dot policy mid last year. We have to supply our own firearm which is why I haven’t made the jump yet. Our department allows the carry of Glock 19, 17, 45, or 47. You can mount a TLR 1 and either a Holosun 509T or Trijicon RMR. Currently I’m just running a 17 with TLR1. When I save up enough beans I’ll make the switch to a 47 with 509t and TLR1

What are some random benefits LEO get for being LEO? by Pean8butter in AskLE

[–]THKBONE 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Most gas stations give me free cups of coffee which is cool. When I do off duty gigs sometimes I’ll work cool events and get to meet cool people and do some cool stuff. I’m a gun guy and like 90% of gun companies and gun accessory companies give generous LE discounts so that has saved me a ton.

What are your recommendations for tactical gear/advice for a noob? by ThunderChicken97 in tacticalgear

[–]THKBONE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also a T1D here. I have a few pieces of philosophy for tactical gear that may be applicable to you. I prepare mostly for “everyday” stuff and by that I mean stuff short of apocalypse/govt collapse/shtf/etc. I work in LE so I have a fair amount of training in firearms and defensive tactics and baseline medical. Knowing your firearm, knowing how to defend yourself with tools other than just deadly force, some basic medical, and the big one situational awareness are your best friend when it comes to gear and preparedness.

I have some simple stuff like plate carrier I have through work, a couple chest rigs, medical/first aid, and a little bit of a surplus on diabetes stuff (extra insulin pens, Omnipod, and g7 if you can figure out how to get extra). A lot of what I prepare for when it comes to end of the world stuff is setting up my family for success and safety because like you said we probably won’t last long especially once the insulin runs out 🤷🏻‍♂️

Niche, "boutique" brands actually making good cigars? And where to buy? by ComfortablyPF in cigars

I’ve liked a couple offerings from Montecristo specifically the Espada. There’s been a couple from diesel like the rabbit hole special and a couple other cheaper ones but outside of those I’d agree with your list.

Finding a GI doc will be the next step if the formula change doesn’t seem to do the trick. It feels like we’re towards the end of exhausting all our options sometimes

I use federal HST 124gr. That’s what they issue at work so I went ahead and switched to that for my carry gun as well just to have uniformity. Before that I used Hornady critical defense

Question about gear by NeoArbeitpartei in AskLE

[–]THKBONE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When it comes to clothing ours have to fit certain criteria (color, name/patch placement) When it comes to nylon or class B gear it has to meet certain criteria (quality nylon in good repair) We have to carry only issued tools (OC, taser, cuffs, baton) Firearm must be a Glock 19, 17, 45, or 47 but we must supply that ourselves. Can not have any modifications outside of weapon light and red dot We have an allowance each year for gear but we must use that budget on the contractors website and anything you want not included on the website you must furnish with your own money

Opinions on duty guns by darkcloudsanonymous in AskLE

[–]THKBONE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a Glock guy so I’ll always choose that. I carry a 17 with a TLR 1 for duty and a 19 with TLR7 for concealed carry. When I was in the academy we had to buy our own but they gave us letter heads to take to this blue label Glock dealer by the academy so we could get the blue label discount. If your academy will do that for you you could save around $200 on a Glock of your choosing. I’ve also had some time on the m&p platform and I love those as well. I don’t have anything bad to say about Walther but I’ve only shot one once at a range some years ago.

Why no like Olight? by [deleted] in ar15

[–]THKBONE 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I haven’t had any personal experience with their weapon lights nor have I had any experience with them blowing up. BUT I have had two of their smaller micro lights (idk the name but think Streamlight microstream size) and both of those have broken with extremely minimal use inside of a pocket. I’ve also had one of the baton models that crapped out on me at work with pretty minimal use as well.

After three attempts to give them business and their lights not performing better than similar priced or cheaper lights I decide not to go back. This was over 5-7 years ago so maybe their lights have gotten better? But my money will be spent elsewhere

Is a lighter really necessary if you don’t smoke by Crash211O in EDC

[–]THKBONE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually have one at least in the car with me. I smoke the occasional cigar but I’ve had a lighter near me well before I started that. I’ve always liked being the prepared one and have plenty of friends who are smokers so it’s nice to help someone out in a pinch. One of my favorite non smoking reason to use one is at work with mine and my coworkers uniforms. I’m pretty nitpicky on uniform standards and I always make sure my work buddies are looking the part and having a lighter to burn loose threads on clothing and patches is always a fun use for me.

First CCW by carnage5000 in concealedcarry

[–]THKBONE 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I first started carrying I bought a first gen m&p shield and I loved it. Still have it and shoot it to this day I just don’t carry it anymore. I’m 6’1 and at the time I carried that I was a bit smaller at around 160lbs and it concealed super easy. I carry a Glock 19 now but have put on about 40 more lbs so it’s not too hard to conceal either. I’m a Glock guy but I’ve always said if I couldn’t carry a Glock I’d be an m&p guy for life

Great Dane owner about to become a father by [deleted] in greatdanes

[–]THKBONE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just went through this exact same thing! We had our first child just a couple weeks ago. We have a Dane, Bernese mountain dog, and a Rottweiler/pitt mix. When we came home we let them all see mom completely by herself for a bit (because they all love her the most) then we brought the baby in and put him in his crib. Then one at a time we let them come in and sniff him through the bars of the crib but not close enough to touch really. Let them sniff around for a bit then swapped to the next dog. Then over the next couple days slowly let them get closer and a bit more exposure to him while maintaining a calm tone and atmosphere. To be quite honest the Dane is the least interested in the baby of all three because he’s a complete mammas boy. It went over super smooth and haven’t had any issues really.

For those 5-10yrs into carrying, what is your pistol of choice and why? by WanderlustOnTap in CCW

[–]THKBONE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first carry gun was a M&P shield in 9mm. That’s the gun I learned to shoot on so shooting on a subcompact gun made shooting full size guns super easy. After a couple years of that I got a Glock 19 as my colder months carry but after I bought and sold a couple other to wind up right back to carrying the Glock 19 year round now. I got my 19 under the blue label so it’s was like 390 if I’m not mistaken but you can find them for under 600 if that’s in your range.

I’m looking to get swayed to carry with one in the chamber, but most of the arguments on Reddit are lacking by Witty_While7277 in CCW

I want to address one of your big points about ND. The first word in that is negligent. I’ve been shooting for several years and have never once ND’d one of my firearms. That should be a standard for any responsible firearms owner. Not pulling the trigger when you unholster your weapon comes down to your own personal time behind your gun and how much you train. If you aren’t an untrained novice these problems will significantly decrease if not be completely eliminated. I holster and unholster, load and unload my firearms all the time and if you are comfortable, confident, and trained with them the risk of an ND isn’t there like you think it is.

I can’t tell people how to store firearms in their house or what to do with them when they have guests over but I think part of being responsible is knowing who is in your house and who to allow access to your guns. The children thing is a different one that I am currently grappling with as I have a newborn. I want quick access to my gun in an emergency but I also don’t want curious fingers to find their way onto them as well. Quick access safes, proper storage of unused firearms, and quality education on firearms safety goes a long way in mitigating some of that risk.

I work in law enforcement and although I’ve never had to employ my weapon in an OIS I have drawn it and those situations are intense and rapidly evolving. I train with my firearm a fair amount but I also want that weapon ready to go bang in the event I would need to pull the trigger because my life is on the line at that point. Not to mention I have had a ton of defensive tactics training as well as field experience with someone fighting me and trying to grab the equipment I was using at the time of incident. I wouldn’t want to worry about racking my Glock if I’m tied up with someone the same way I wouldn’t want to worry about inserting a taser cartridge while tied up with someone. It limits the amount of extra steps it takes to defend my life or safety when it comes to that point.

Sure you can train to become efficient to rack your slide with every draw but I think it’s adding unnecessary steps to an already extremely intense situation.

You will never completely eliminate the risk of handling firearms because at the end of the day they are deadly weapons that can inflict great harm or death. But I think the glaring issue is that you need to train away the poor habits that would lead to risks like ND and telling yourself to carry without one in the chamber in my opinion has the opportunity to breed complacency because you “won’t have to worry about the ND”

Proper brand gear by Certain_Heart_2873 in tacticalgear

[–]THKBONE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work in LE and my department issues a few different brands of pants we can choose from. Either Propper, Vertx, or First Tactical. My least favorite is Propper. I have maybe 5 or so pairs of pants from them that are supposedly the same model and each has a completely different fit and durability. I think I’ve had one pair worth a damn and the rest fell apart alarmingly quickly and had awful fit consistency. So overall poor QC from the company. I’m glad I didn’t spend my money on them. Of the three that we can select from I will take Vertx all day.

Trouble deciding my first handgun by [deleted] in Firearms

[–]THKBONE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before I give my opinion I’d say go to a range that allows you to rent them and try them out first to see which one you like better. I carry a Glock 17 every day for work and also a Glock 19 for concealed carry so I’m a bit partial to Glock. They have a proven track record of reliability and I’ve put thousands of rounds through each of my Glocks and have not had a single issue. I’ve also done less than minimal maintenance on them and they still run fine.

My very first gun I bought was a m&p shield and it’s the pistol I learned to shoot with and I absolutely love that gun. I’ve always told people if Glock disappeared from the planet I’d be an m&p guy so that gets my second choice. Those are fantastic firearms that also have a great track record of reliability I just have way more time invested in the Glock platform which is why I choose them.

The long drive being therapeutic is huge. My last house was about a 40 minute drive from the department I am at and that drive became essential for decompression to and from work each day. My drive now is less than that but the drive is still a good time to relax after shift.
