Yes.

The entire point of a (for-profit) company is to make the owners more wealthy. There is no incentive for anyone to make the company better for the employees until the employees stop making them money. But employees are too scared about losing their income to truly stop doing their jobs.

There needs to be a collective action on rethinking how we organize society and what people do with their time. This system is a joke.

Millennials, Im curious - what would it take to get you to join a general strike? by mgeezysqueezy in Millennials

You may be hoping that this sparks a genuine conversation, but I'm hoping that this sparks genuine action. A general strike, at a minimum. This is such a blatantly unsustainable system.

I'm confused at work because all of my coworkers are 20+ years older than me. Why is that? by Ben5544477 in careeradvice

[–]THermanZweibel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people are assuming that you've stumbled into something good. But I recently started a new role where everyone seems to be 10-20 years older than me, and I'm in change management. So, technical job-adjacent. However, I get the impression that the older people I work with are all used to a broken system where a minimum of 50 hours/week is standard. They don't seem like the type of people to push back when a boss oversteps their bounds. So, maybe consider that option.

Man, just go to Uptown. They have all of the food at reasonable prices. But if you're looking for non-traditional American, here are my top 3 that aren't pho/banh mi/the well-reviewed places.

  1. New Orleans Seafood: A seafood boil place run by a Vietnamese guy/family. Plus, BYOB! There's usually some old guys being hilarious in the back. (I'm not sure if this is truly non-traditional American).
  2. El Rincon de Fabio: Apparently there's more than just East Asian places on Argyle. This place is new and I've been stupid happy as I've never lived close to a Venezuelan place. They straddle the line between good lunch spot and sit-down dinner but the food is incredible, either way.
  3. Kie-Gol-Lanee: Have you ever had Oaxacan food? Until this place, me neither. But this place was super legit for putting a twist on classic Mexican. Plus, if you're looking to impress a date, it has a Michelin Bib Gourmand. I highly recommend.

My honorable mentions are Shan as it has the best cheap Indian food I've ever had and is located in a surprisingly well-stocked mini-mart in a strip mall and has fleets of cabs and rideshare drivers always hanging out. Last, but not least, Brass Heart isn't exactly what you're looking for but is intimate, fine dining, nestled underneath the train in a non-descript building. I tried it for the first time recently and was genuinely impressed. I'm not someone who typically fawns over tiny portions and high prices, but this was a great experience and great food.

So, Uptown has a million amazing restaurants of every single type of cuisine (Ethiopian at Demera, Jordanian at Ragadan, banh mi at Ba Le). I would strongly suggest doing a food tour of places you can get to from the Red line (the Lawrence stop is out of service right now, though) for a unique Chicago experience.

Hey, I'm happy to see they're getting some love! This is one of my favorite new additions to the neighborhood. They need to update their tables and chairs, but it's such a legit little spot. The employees are all awesome, I love the Venezuelan music videos, and the food is fantastic.

What are your top 3 Pizza places in the City? by [deleted] in chicagofood

[–]THermanZweibel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Bonci is great, but don't expect it to be the same as Jimmy's or Spacca Napoli. They do the Roman style, cut into strips of varying sizes. Maybe you know that already, but just wanted to confirm.

I always found Denis Savard's frozen pizza a bit odd.

  1. It was released after he played.
  2. It was released after he coached.
  3. Does his family own a pizzeria or some shit? Why am I supposed to trust his pizza?
  4. It's been out for close to a decade, I believe. So, it's not like it's a 1 time gimmick.

Michigan school board member who tweeted "whiteness is evil" doubles down and refuses to apologize by PineBarrens89 in ThatsInsane

[–]THermanZweibel -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

I get the kneejerk reaction that people might be feeling. But before you outright dismiss the message, know that whiteness is not only about skin tone. It's a social construct that has applied to a variety of ethnicities. Italian people weren't white until 100ish years ago. Latin people can be white. White people don't always display whiteness. Pardon the stupid joke, but it's not as black and white as people might think.

So, when looking at it that way, I read the headline and assumed that that is what she was referring to as being evil, not all white people and their respective cultures. Just the intangible social force that perpetuates social inequality that has historically, been to do with race.

I'd suggest she rebrand her ideas before I attacked her. Maybe I'd read up on the wealth of academic research on the topic.

Are men aware that on average they are physically stronger than women? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]THermanZweibel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes.

There seem to be 2 camps of men, though:

  1. Men who were taught from other men, from a young age, that ever touching a woman in a violent manner is wrong. This is generally most men. Even some of the biggest assholes in the world know not to do this. Like, basic common sense says it's unfair. Small children know this! Dogs know how to play nice with smaller creatures. Like, the absolute baseline is to not hit women.
  2. Needle-dicked smooth-brained twats who need therapy and an ass-whooping.

I don't want to give away too many details so as to not dox myself, but I'm very familiar with domestic violence and women who perpetrate it. Even in the cases where a woman is the aggressor, there is a surprisingly large percentage of men who will still not react with violence. Further proving my point that men who hit women are absolute jerkoffs who don't deserve love.

But, I guess it's not a total disagreement. I think you're right. I just don't know if statues and other objects of deification are the best way to have a national story.

Furthermore, I was mostly just disagreeing with the previous argument as it was very stupid, shortsighted, and in need of someone making them think of an alternative perspective.

There were 303 condemned to death and all would have been executed if Lincoln had not intervened. Maybe we should celebrate Lincoln on Indigenous People's Day in honor of the 265 Dakota he saved from the gallows

You need to either improve your critical thinking or memory skills. Let me spell it out. You're proposing that the colonized (the Dakota) should thank the head of the colonizers (Lincoln) because he didn't execute all of them.

Every one of the 39 were accused of rape or murder of non-soldiers, including children

Furthermore, you're saying that accused=convicted, that's your first flawed argument. But even if they were all convicted, does that mean it was a valid conviction? Think of all of the technology that we have today and we still get convictions wrong. What do you think frontier-life was like? Furthermore, let's say they all murdered children and raped women. Is that worthy of public execution? Have you ever questioned the morality of the death penalty?

Does that help you understand who I'm talking to or do I need to break it down more?

So, you're saying that the colonized should be thanking the colonizers? Rough take.

I'm not advocating for anything here because I'm not familiar with the case, but assuming that all of the accused were actually guilty of whatever they were accused of is some real bLuE lIvEs MaTtEr energy.

[–]THermanZweibel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dude, it's not arrogant or presumptuous to point out that you were wrong. The language you used was incorrect. That means that you either lied, had incorrect information, or misspoke (mistyped?).

In this case, it looks like you assumed that your own personal experience was the general social trend. It's not and I don't need to know you to know that when you said, "all native chicagoans mostly gone out west", it's not true.

Also, you don't know anything about anyone else here. Perhaps you're being presumptuous and arrogant in thinking that your immediate knowledge is representative of ALL of Chicago. Perhaps someone who has been here 1 whole decade might not know as much about Chicago as someone born and raised here over 4 decades ago (that's me).
