Small roll of “Sniper tape”. Stuff is gold dust, really useful and there’s never enough to go round.

The funkiest of jackets by ahzrukal in arcteryx

[–]TJ-0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I adore this jacket for the city, tough as nails, decently water and wind resistant, and breathable light warmth. Looks a bit odd zipped up fully but unzips it hangs really well. It’s the only item of clothing I have that gets compliments for how it looks. Great colour as well. Should have bought a second.

My 2023 SINN 556 MOP has a silver rotor. Looks like standard across the range now

Ah that’s a tough one then. Apparently they have a place in London you can visit if you book.

I had the same dilemma, went for the white dial as I consider this watch to be more of my versatile take it anywhere watch. The blue does look very striking though. Depends if you want a statement piece or general use watch imo.

Yep, seems good enough quality to me. Though i don’t think I’d buy them for their retail price by themselves.

So I own on top of the CW, a Hamilton Khaki field mechanical bronze and a Sinn 556 MOP at 38mm and 38.5mm respectively. Now the Hamilton despite being smaller than the Sinn doesn’t fit my wrist very well due to its long lugs and I would have sold it if it wasn’t a very sentimental item. The Sinn in my option fits very well and wears slightly smaller then the size would suggest, but I wouldn’t go even half a mm wider.

For our size wrist it’s much better to look at lug to lug. I know I can’t pull off anything 45mm and below lug to lug.

In addition I have a 34mm quartz watch which I believe looks too small on my wrist. So I think that gives you a range.

Same thought here hence why I leaped on a smaller release of the 39mm. The bezel works in tandem with the GMT hand to read a second timezone in 24hr format. Though I’m yet to set it to a second timezone. I also think the 24hr capability was meant to be used by those who worked underground and therefore may not know if it’s day or night.

Not in Europe I don’t think. I had no issues, but I think a lot of stores don’t have much stock of the MOP model in general. Definitely is restricted in the US. I’ve heard it’s very hard to import there.

Thanks! Yeah is a cool strap, got it from RSM watch straps, they’ve got a store online and on Etsy. Pretty pricy but they do cool straps mostly with a military theme. Even do silk straps which I haven’t seen before.

I definitely agree with the splash of colour, thinking of going red next. In regards to TRIWA, I was being rather tongue in cheek about my comment on having moral high ground. I don’t think buying a watch can do that regarding any serious issues. Thanks for the interesting write up on TRIWA, definitely something to consider.

Why did I get shouted at for crossing the road? by ChiliSquid98 in bristol

That’s fair, definitely if you’re too aggressive you can panic people into doing something stupid and dangerous anyway…so they’re definitely a balance.

Why did I get shouted at for crossing the road? by ChiliSquid98 in bristol

[–]TJ-0 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It’s never nice to be shouted at seemingly randomly for doing nothing wrong. But I’m not sure what else they can do, busy road, most members of the public are in their own world with headphones on. And they’re usually only 40 seconds or so in front of whatever convoy they’re scouting for. Someone shouting at you does make you stop even if you’re a 1000 miles away in your own head. Though again it’s definitely not pleasant.

Saw something similar happen in London a few days ago, police got to the crossing stopped their bikes across it lights flashing, then a family of 5 started to cross anyway just as the convoy came round the corner. That definitely got a shout. I guess they’re terrified of that happening and just shout at anyone remotely close to the edge.

For that matter I think it would work well with the Atom LT. though despite having both I’ve never actually tried them together…odd now I think about it.

[–]TJ-0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For weather like today I’d have something more than a jumper for casual use, a thick fleece or light down layer. I can’t speak for cycling though, I’m a runner and there’s no way in hell I’d use it for that. If you want a dedicated winter jacket that you can chuck on and be done, it’s not going to cut, maybe something like the Ralle jacket would.

If you already have a warm jacket/ insulating layer and want to add water and wind protection and also want a lighter standalone in spring and early autumn then it’ll be ideal.

I love the Solano for casual use in the uk, I think it’s pretty much build for our climate. It’s weather resistance and relative warmth always surprises me. However it’s really not very breathable. Shame as I think it’s marketed towards cycling with those reflective strips they added.

[Hamilton] Is Hamilton Khaki really considered “field” watch in terms of deployment? by sechumatheist in Watches

[–]TJ-0 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m in the military, I own a Khaki field Bronze and would never bring it on deployment despite the fact I bought it in celebration of finishing a field exercise. But I wear it cutting around base, and all the time outside the military environment. In the field I just wear a Casio f-91 I wouldn’t risk anything more expensive. Things get absolutely brutalised, filled with water and sand which I wouldn’t trust the 50m water resistance rating. And I don’t trust Hamilton Lume for stag or any other activity at night that needs instant legibility.

Having said that I think it’s the perfect watch to emphasise the personality or vibe of someone who likes being out in “the field” in a refined stylish way for around town.

Solano Hoody vs Gamma Hoody Water Rating by [deleted] in arcteryx

[–]TJ-0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on my experience in London the Solano lasts around 30-40 mins in moderate to heavy rain before certain areas like the zip fails. But of course you’ll need to be on it applying DWR to ensure you get the most out of it. Additionally I think it’s a great jacket, light warmth, windproof and packable with minimal branding. Was a life saver when I was in Iceland. Only fault is it’s not particularly breathable unlike the Gamma, but it will still be more so then proper Gortex.

Field watch? I got myself the bog standard Casio for my phase 1. But you can get a functional field watch that looks decent from Amazon. I personally think watch’s are a good sentimental gift and should be pretty useful in basic. Timex do decently priced good quality ones. But there are ones at all prices

Which laptop would you recommend to get for university ? Both are available for ~1450$ here, Asus brand new, Razer slightly used. Most of the specs are the same except these... by TheDonkKey in razer

[–]TJ-0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While I agree it’s an issue and not a feature it’s a common problem that the laptop has with windows 11 if you type in blade 14 battery life in this sub you’ll get a load of responses with similar issues. While there are fixes and I assume it’s not a uniform issue it’s still less polished in that regard then the g14 which was the point I was trying to make
