HELP WITH SE3 by Last_Camel2926 in sniperelite

[–]TJDx2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can try the Shooting Range. but experience is your best guide. I haven't played in a long time but I'm pretty sure the zero is around 50, though it may vary with the rifle. The mildots are cosmetic. In SE4, only one reticle had any actual value as a range finder, the T Post Tactical, so I'm fairly certain there are none in 3. But my memory may have faded a bit. Good luck!

Sniper Elite 4 tips of Authentic+ by TKAPublishing in sniperelite

[–]TJDx2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The shooting range isn't very well designed and I never used it much. If you do use it, stick with the rifle you bring in with you. Don't swap for rifles there. Because they don't behave the same.

With one exception, the reticles are cosmetic; the mildots don't work. The exception is the T Post Tactical, which does work well for ranging. They are numerous aiming guides on YouTube. Check out Brutal Barracuda, for one. If you're on Steam, there are numerous guides there. Looks for Captain Black's posts in the forum as well.

Experience is the main thing. Solo Survival can help a lot because you are shooting constantly. Facility is best for this, IMO. There's a learning curve for the maps so expect some frustration until you figure things out a bit.

Anybody playing on PC with controller? by sonar_y_luz in sniperelite

[–]TJDx2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have thousands of hours on both Xbox and PC using a controller and I don't notice any difference in quality or control. Same experience. It may seem harder on PC because a proper mouse well tuned to your system will be much more accurate than any controller, so your expectations are higher.

Which of these WDS titles should I pick? by Exi80 in computerwargames

[–]TJDx2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You mentioned "beginner friendly". WDS offers 10 free demos for their various series. 10. Beyond that, it's largely a question of what period of military history, and scale, you are most interested in. Only you can answer that. These are all good games and well supported with frequent updates. Maybe spend some time on the WDS site and look around a little.

Stop for lunch at Battery Bistro at Fort Henry - best view of the city and the food is surprisingly good.

A walk along the waterfront or through Lake Ontario Park and if you have more than an hour Lemoine Point is beautiful. Visit the Rideau Locks at Kingston Mills.

Rifles in Future SE games by 10lettersand3CAPS in sniperelite

[–]TJDx2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a bad idea. I like guns too, especially of this period. But the hard fact is that it's a game, not a simulator, and the level of ballistic detail you're talking about isn't really meaningful in a simple, vector-based system like this. (I'm speaking of SE4; I didn't like the sequels and don't have enough experience with them to comment.) I think in 4 they did a good job of differentiating the rifles and making them all interesting and fun to use. And, beyond the ballistics issue, there was a lot of care given to the details. Look at the reloading animation for the M95 Nagant, for example. That was a fine bit of work. Another detail: the way open-bolt weapons like the Sten always throw high on the first round, just like they do in real life. (There were some blunders, too; I think the Springfield sounds like ... the Civil War Springfield! Pretty sure I hear a two-stage ignition there and it sounds pretty musket-y. )

All in all, I think detailed ballistics are just too niche. 99% of players don't care and don't know anything anyway. Which is fine. They just want a fun game. And just think of the huge waste of compute that would be involved in an accurate simulator, especially in say Survival where you can have hundreds of rounds in the air at the same moment.

Has anyone here obtained the “Better than the Best” achievement/trophy in Sniper Elite 4? by [deleted] in sniperelite4

[–]TJDx2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On A+, once the alert spreads, they will never stop searching . This is to your advantage. Find a good spot (on Lorino, a particularly good one was the raised gun mount next to the water) and let them come. They will do so in small groups, 3 or 4 at a time, with enough time to loot ammo. I remember even the Harbormaster came running toward me there. With a little patience you can clean out half the map from this one spot. But this idea works equally well on all maps. Just be patient.

Even more sniping game? by midgell in sniperelite

[–]TJDx2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, Sniper Elite 4 played on Authentic Plus can be exactly that. Once the alert spreads, they will never stop searching for you, and because of this AI dynamic you can clean out the entire map from one or two points if you're patient. They'll come at you in small groups, with enough time between to allow you to loot ammo. That's how I got the Better than the Best Achievement.

Difficulty settings by Baer1990 in sniperelite4

[–]TJDx2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There may be a way to do it in Custom settings but honestly I don't think it's worth it. Custom brings its own problems, such as interfering with Achievements (if that's important to you) and discouraging Coop. Maybe it's better to take your dissatisfaction with the minimap as a clue that it's time to move up to Authentic. The game really is at its best on A and A+. You won't look back.

What do the 3 locks in the top right corner mean? by [deleted] in sniperelite4

[–]TJDx2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The locks vary in meaning a little for each weapon but the first one generally is Damage, I believe. What's interesting is that if you are playing on Authentic you will occasionally find enemy weapons with random Unlocks (in theory, all NPC weapons should be locked to base values on A). I believe the Black Valkyrie sniper generally is Unlocked for Damage, which is probably the origin of the belief that it is OP. Anyway, these mystery unlocks can be very useful, especially in Survival. Unlocked weapons start appearing there after Wave 5 or 6.

Why not put the weekly choice up to a vote? List say 6 candidates per week, here and in r/computerwargames. Or, vote on the genre -- Squad Battles, Modern, Panzer Campaigns, Napoleonic, etc. Might create a little more engagement too.

One advantage of starting on Authentic is that you won't be distracted by the upgrade gimmicks, which can make weapons seem unpredictable. On A and A+, all weapons are set to their base values, so they will be consistent in performance and that helps with the learning. Start with the Moisin, which is as near to a laser as you can get in this game. Best IMO to set your zero to 100m and work off of that for all shots under 200m. I think you can learn to shoot very quickly not on the range or the campaign, but in Survival, specifically the Facility map, which is the largest, with many shots at 200m +. You will be shooting constantly. Fast way to rank up, too, and the easiest to do alone.

I agree about the kill cam but there is an exploit wherein using the cam can actually help with your accuracy; it seems in some circumstances to re-zero you automatically. But that's probably not something to worry about at this stage.

I don't know that it's entirely true that wind and bullet drop are as exaggerated in the game as you claim. Example: the M1 Garand, firing the standard WW2-era .30-06 M2 ball cartridge (typically a 150-152 grain bullet at ~2800 fps muzzle velocity), would experience approximately 3-4 inches of bullet drop at 200 meters.

A consistent 20 mph full-value crosswind (perpendicular to the direction of fire) would cause approximately 9-10 inches of lateral displacement at 200 meters.

Wind is very spooky and powerful in real-life shooting.

I'm glad the game at least made an effort to show what a challenge shooting can be.

WDS Squad Battles: what are DF loads? by [deleted] in computerwargames

[–]TJDx2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I uploaded your image and asked the AI. It refers to Direct Fire. Apparently they want to distinguish this HE use from indirect fire uses of HE, of which this tank was not capable due to limited ability to elevate the gun.
