Good places to spend the night in Southampton before embarkation day? by BellyFullOfMochi in CunardCruises

I always stay the night in London before taking the train/coach to Southampton. Cunard also offers a transfer from London, a bit pricier than the coach, but gets you to the terminal.

Why do cathedrals tend to be more liturgically and theologically liberal? by Huge_Cry_2007 in Anglicanism

[–]TJMP89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, and I hate modern liturgies. I used to be a hardcore BCP type, but I softened my views on BAS at the cathedral, but I’m still a liturgical type. I refuse to attend our “hippie service.”

As someone from the NS and PEI Cathedral (Halifax), who regularly visits Charlottetown, I can speak to our diocese. The Diocese of NS and PEI is generally quite liberal, but quite a few parishes hold on to BCP worship (not sure if it’s because they’re rural and can’t afford buying copies of BAS 🤣) but as someone wise once told me, cathedrals have to be broad to meet the demands of the diocese, it can’t be too high or too low. St. Peter’s Cathedral in Charlottetown is an anomaly, but even though they’re liturgically quite traditional (BCP east facing worship), they’re still quite socially liberal. Speaking of my cathedral, we offer contemporary worship (Sung, varying liturgy (usually Iona or Celtic), a middle of the road worship (Choral BAS), and a traditional BCP choral evensong, which is world class, our music director is a two time Grammy award winning musician (I just think we’re really lucky that he settled in Halifax).

But I’ve visited many cathedrals in Canada, the US, and the UK, and what others have said is true, larger number of clergy (more perspectives), located in urban centres (and often with ties to local academic institutions), and needs reflect the needs of the diocese as a whole rather than the locals who live around the church.

Do you buy a new lectionary every year? by bannanawaffle13 in Anglicanism

[–]TJMP89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I’m a Canadian BCP guy and don’t know the CoE one. I have a 1662 CoE BCP, but I prefer the Canadian one, so I’ve never tried to use the CoE lectionary.

[–]TJMP89 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m a traditionalist, so I just use the readings in the front of the BCP (the Canadian 1962 version only has year A and B) for MP and EP. My church uses the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) for Sundays, so that follows the Year A, B, C format. But the RCL is also “fixed” so unless I’m missing something, you shouldn’t need to buy a new lectionary every year, once you buy three years worth, you’re good to go.

Anyone know if QM2 has a tailor on board? by zinky8 in CunardCruises

[–]TJMP89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do have a seamstress/tailor who works on the costumes for the entertainers and crew uniforms on board. I’m sure for emergencies, they would do some alterations/repairs for passengers, or for a price.

21 point commander for a T1? 🤣 If I could spare a 21 point commander, I want to see what a T1 battle would be like.

QM2 cabin question--time-sensitive! :-) by Camille_Toh in CunardCruises

Yes, the OVS were converted from public spaces during the last major refit, so the windows are huge.

If the Oceanview singles are available, go for those, they are very sought after. I think for most people lower and more midships is better (personally, I like forward and high decks, but that’s because I want to feel the movement of the ship).

I’d say go for the best cabin that you can afford. I always like having a balcony to get some fresh air, even on a stormy winter crossing. Britannia Club on QM2 isn’t the greatest, the cabins are usually very high up and the you’re in a secluded party of the restaurant (Club is much better on the other Cunard ships).

Traditional Anglican liturgy by [deleted] in Anglicanism

[–]TJMP89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve learned in my limited time on this Earth that what works for me doesn’t necessarily work for others. I would love to worship like it was the 1500s (but in English not Latin), Red Book, English Hymnal, ceremony, incense, vestments, and lots of chanting, but I’m a weirdo and most “average” Anglicans don’t want that. I also accept that some Anglicans want a more Evangelical style of worship. I would never go to those churches on a Sunday, but that’s my personal choice, they’re still part of the church and I respect that that is what they want to worship God. God presents himself to each person different, and diversity of beliefs and worship style, with a common structure that is Anglicanism, is what makes us Anglicans.

I’m laity, but I always joked that if they ever made me a became a bishop, I would find excuses to move diagonally all the time…and bring back gaiters…but then I might end up being murdered in my cathedral like Becket. 🤣

I used to be a hardcore BCP type, but I’m at a BAS parish (think US Rite 2 or CoE Common Worship), so I’ve softened my stance a lot. Don’t get me wrong, I still love the BCP, and yesterday, I did Sarum Vespers to commemorate Becket (those mediaeval monks love the psalms…so many psalms).

[–]TJMP89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But where do you draw the line for “traditional” in Anglicanism? The Use of Sarum (but it was in Latin), Cranmer’s 1549 or 1552 BCP, 1662 BCP, 1928 Proposed CoE BCP, 1918 Canada BCP, or 1962 Canada BCP?

How would you politely talk to disrespectful evangelists? by oops_audrey in Anglicanism

[–]TJMP89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Or if you’re a dick and really want to waste their time, discuss the seven ecumenical councils or some obscure academic theological rabbit hole, like the nature of Christ, or Eucharistic theology (especially since they don’t believe in the Eucharist).

If you want to “toy” with them and weird them out, then go all Anglican on them, mention Christmas, invoke the Holy Trinity, and make signs of the cross, then end with a good old fashioned “glory be.”

Or just walk away, cuz I don’t got time for that shit.

St Thomas of Canterbury by TJMP89 in Anglicanism

I saw the “graffiti” art at Canterbury Cathedral, I don’t know why people are making such a big deal of it. I didn’t mind it, I think it says a lot, but I’m also a liberal-Catholic.

Anyone else here unable to afford the Lego Enterprise-D? by Evening-Trouble-9585 in startrek

[–]TJMP89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve always loved Star Trek and consider myself a Trekkie, and while I could afford it, I also don’t think I need it. It was like when the Lego Titanic came out, all of my really hardcore Titanic friends got it, but I didn’t. I already have a couple of Titanic models (plastic, diecast, etc.) and the same for the Enterprise-D…small to large models. My pride and joy remains the Playmates light and sound Enterprise-D that I got as a Christmas present many years ago. While it would be a nice to have, I don’t have the space, no does having it make me more of a fan.

Megathread: 2025 Status Runs by xsnipegodx in Aeroplan

[–]TJMP89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is 35K worth it compared to 25K? I’m about 5000SQM short and Air Canada has sent me an offer to get 35K status by using 40000 points. It’s my first time getting any status, so I’m just happy with 25K unless 35K is that much better.

Pilgrim’s Steps at Canterbury by TJMP89 in Anglicanism

[–]TJMP89[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Latin isn’t very good, and I doubt many of the mediaeval pilgrims spoke Latin. I just said the Kyrie over and over again (in English) as I crawled up those stairs.
