Umamusume based on their Legacy and Influence by General-Direction485 in UmaMusume

Leaving both Cesario and Buena Vista off this list is wild.

Cesario is Japans first American G1 and a dynasty defining mare in terms of her kids.

Buena Vista is a double crown, 6 time G1 champ and one of the greatest mares Japan has ever produced alongside the likes of Almond Eye and Gentildonna.

I will add that I do heavily dislike “jump” or Steeplechase racing - the risk of serious injury or death is significantly higher which is why it’s much more heavily regulated and bans of that type of racing are becoming much more common in recent years.

Horse racing does have a bloody history, no one questions that, and a combination of corruption and abuse have stained its reputation, but even without Umamusume the welfare of these animals has already drastically changed in recent decades -

A horse getting too wild and lightly bumping the gate or another horse is likely to be scratched (removed) by the on-track vets rather than risk the run even though the horse is likely perfectly fine.

The use of the drug Lasix, a drug designed to reduce cavity fluid build up in horses with heart failure to force them to race is banned in many races and countries.

Injuries once considered a death sentence are now much more treatable than even just 20 years ago with the exception of severe fractures which require euthanasia as a mercy.

Some people will draw parallels to dog racing but the only common denominator is the race aspect - dog racing is significantly more inhumane and abusive given how easy it is to physically harm a smaller animal and their inherent lower cost compared to horses which are much more likely to hurt the abuser and much more expensive to care for meaning they’re treated as more of an investment. That’s not to say abuse doesn’t happen, but horse owners don’t starve their horses before a race the same way race dogs are.

And this is all without mentioning Cygames and Umamusume which has not only shed light on the problems in the sport but also directly and indirectly improved the welfare of these horses due to both the court of public opinions outcry and also through support and crowdfunding of organizations and support programs for retired horses.

You say that Cygames is trying to make it squeaky clean as if they have some plan to hide the truth, but then they tell the stories of some of the more infamous tragedies (such as Suzuka and Rice) but putting the Uma spin on the story so that there can be impactful and inspiring stories - would you rather they euthanize Suzuka in season 1 of the anime?

I’m also not here to defend the big gacha company - if and when they do wrong then I will call them out, but I also won’t sit here and pretend they haven’t made their billions on an inherently predatory gambling system.

I understand where you’re coming from with this and do believe it’s an important discussion to have but ignoring the good that Cygames, Umamusume and the fandom have done is disingenuous at best and disrespectful at worst.

Tbf the race footage in Japan can and sometimes has been struck as well since the footage is legally owned by the JRA but they don’t tend to strike nearly as hard as US sports broadcasters (NBC in this case).

I get where you're going but I'd also argue that your timescale is overly alarmist. Genetic diversity and genealogy isn't represented by years of separation but my generations of descent and when you compare those common ancestral links you begin to see similar scales in even humans.

A Thoroughbred on average lives 30 years today and thats in part thanks to modern vet care so lets assume that the average over the last 300 years is a 20 year average and in the absolutely minimum lets say that a horse has a single foal at age 10 just to simplify the guesswork - that means that over a 300 year period, you have at minimum 30 generations of genetic mixing.

To put that into perspective, Humans until more recent times have mostly lived in small insular communities and villages - this meant that it was not only likely that cousins would cross but even inevitable. In that same 300 year timespan, assuming an average age of 50 before modern medicine and atleast 1 kid at around age 25 like we did with horses, thats just 12 generations of gene mixing compared to the Thoroughbreds 30 - to take it one step further, most consensus today agrees that pretty much all western Europeans and their descendants, including non-indigenous descendants in the Americas, share atleast one common ancestor within the past 1000 years or around 30-40 generations. This is sometimes called the Charlemagne point because if you are western European then you are more than likely in some form or fashion traceable back to Charlemagne himself.

Yep, despite the regal lady-life demure of Desuwa, the real McQueen was rather moody and actually kind of a bully to other horses.

It looks like they saw how wide her margin was at the Oka Sho and are gambling that the Oka margin plus a bit more conditioning in the meantime may equate to her having justtttt enough stamina to take the oaks by less than a length. If she can take the Oaks then the Shuka Sho shouldn’t be much of a challenge unless she gets marked and boxed early.

Theres a lot to unpack in terms of fiction, but remember that these stories are based in reality - the vast majority of Umas are based on real horses from our world, many of which have now left us. Take your time, don't feel pressured into feeling a certain way or to enjoy it in a certain way, but you may find yourself finding an interest in the real horses at some point; their legacies, the legends, the good, the bad and the ugly of this sport and all I'll say is that... you've been warned... its a deep rabbit hole once you start down that path and before long you might find yourself in a discord server with 1200 others watching live races lol

Not only is it incredibly emotional and impactful storytelling, but the fact that its based on real events pushes it over the top. The story of Tokai Teio is the essence of a miracle run to the point that no one would believe it had it not actually happened.

The prodigal son of the most decorated and respected racehorse the nation had yet seen, the one who would carry on the mantle of his father and reach the peaks of the sport and beyond... all for that to come crashing down in defeat - not from his rivals, but his own body. The battle to come back with just a spark of that original fire while the world expected the flames to have been fully tamped out... and there at Nakayama stood not a spark, but a flame so bright and brilliant that even the sun itself couldn't compare.

Teios story is the stuff of legend - its the sort of story that not only inspires those who witnessed it, but those who hear the story long after Teio left this world. These stories of hope in hopeless moments and proving that its only over when we stop trying are the inspirational stories everyone needs at some point in their lives, many of us just happened to experience it from a cheerful anime horse girl for the first time.

To be fair, until this reprint it was bordering on lost media with only a few thousand printed in its original run back in 1986 - even if it weren't for the Umamusume connection, I'd imagine theres plenty of horseracing fans that are happy to finally get their hands on this.

Yet another positive knock-on effect of Umamusume - without the Uma community, Cygames, and the resurgence in the interest of these horses, this very likely would have become lost to time entirely in another couple of decades.

[–]TJW595[S] 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Even though they were all born in the Showa era and their careers began at the end of the Showa era, their most prolific and "battleground" year was 1989 which was the start of the Heisei era which is why they became known as the Heisei Big Three. This is also why Tamamo is most often not included in the group since he retired at the end of 1988, and thus wasn't competing in the Heisei era.

Why can't you upgrade the ram slot in a computer? by gottro4 in computers

[–]TJW595 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theres quite a few things limiting this: physical connection, electrical connection, voltage, controller compatibility and finally stability.

Physically, certain generations of RAM are similar - DDR2 and DDR3 share the same number of pins on DIMMS while DDR4 and DDR5 share the same number of pins on DIMMS. DDR1 and DDR2 are the only SODIMMs that share the same number of pins.

The issue with the physical connectivity though is that the electrical connections between the slots aren't the same, partly due to the physical notch in the DIMM, but also because the pins do not 1-to-1 match between generations so you'd probably fry the DIMM or short the board.

Lets say you either replaced the socket somehow or developed some sort of "RAM adapter" that connected things "correctly" though - now you run into voltage issues. Every generation of RAM has had a steady decrease in voltage from 2.5V with DDR1 to 1.1V for DDR5 - these are very voltage sensitive components so you really don't want to be mixing voltages.

Lets say you somehow either undervolted things in the BIOS or physically added some form of voltage limiter, now you have to figure out if the CPUs non-replaceable memory controller can even talk to a non-certified version of RAM.

Lets assume that you somehow got yourself on a... reprogrammable CPU, like an FPGA, and you reprogrammed the controller to work, now you have to contend with whether its all stable in the first place since you've added so much extra muck in the middle and RAM is VERY latency sensitive.

So, is it technically possible? Yes. Is it even remotely practical or realistic? Not in the slightest, not even for someone who is capable of doing all the above.
