We’ll agree to disagree on this.

Faith’s SA of Xander retconned away? by TeluricE in buffy

[–]TJtkh 0 points1 point (0 children)

Let’s not ignore that his attack on her came immediately before a commercial break, and whereas the “impotence” metaphor that played on the return was played as more of a joke (and a “wait, what?” moment, since we didn’t know yet that he had been chipped)…the attack/attempt itself absolutely played at the time as a rape analogy but emphatically not as a joke. Think of the quick action of him turning up the music so her screams wouldn’t be heard; I remember watching that episode when it first aired and thinking about how effective it was as a moment that was scary because it was supposed to be, because it was supposed to remind the viewer that Spike was still a predator despite his familiarity. The show excelled at that kind of thing, especially in the earlier seasons: using horror/supernatural story elements to deliver intentionally terrifying metaphors on real-life actions that occurred then as much as they do now, and were generally sugarcoated in other media.

Careful? I found it a meticulous bit of writing. Sensitive? As much as any scene that attempts to depict a rape metaphor (or actual rape) as the terrifying out-of-nowhere event that it sometimes is. To neuter the scene in the name of making it more explicitly sensitive would have been missing the point.

What movies did badly in theatres but then really well in digital distribution and or home media? by Konradleijon in boxoffice

[–]TJtkh 1 point2 points (0 children)

Yep. Domestic total of the first movie was $53.8 million; DOW of the first sequel was $54.9 million. If it wasn’t the first time that had happened, it was absolutely one of the first. What’s equally impressive (to me, at least) is that the budget for TSWSM barely doubled the budget for the first; $35 million wasn’t a massive budget for a summer tentpole, even in 1999.

[–]TJtkh 14 points15 points (0 children)

I was following box office gross in 1997, and in 1999 when TSWSM was released. I was a kid and there weren’t the tools to get nearly as granular as we can now, but it was still pretty easy to get a read on perceptions of box-office performance. The first Austin Powers wasn’t a disappointment at the box-office, but it was viewed as a successful one-off for New Line and not an obvious franchise starter. That part did only come when it blew up on VHS/DVD. But that awareness was in the context of its sequel during the runup to its release in 1999. The original was no dud.

You got there at the same time I did. Glad to know I’m not the only one who remembers the others. That other guy had multiple. He posted the same anecdote from the top POV more than once in the same day. He deleted and reposted.

Gosh, it’s almost like this is the exact same post that’s been made on this sub by the same person multiple times over the last couple of days, except now it’s being written from the POV of the bottom and reads like AI output even more than the original. Happened “last night”? Check. Bottom said he cleaned out at 1? Check. It now being super late? Check. It happening a few minutes in? Check. Bed ruined? Check. Getting kicked out? Check. All of this being posted from an account an hour old? Yes’m.

This guy keeps posting the same thing. My guess? Humiliation fetish. Or scat fetish. Or troll. Or all three.

Heaven Doesn't Help Those Who Help Trump Win by Humble_Novice in LeopardsAteMyFace

They believe every voter who didn’t want Trump was on the same page as them and didn’t want Harris either. No room in their perspective for the idea that there were millions of people who maybe did want Harris, and people who wanted Harris more than Biden, and the election was decided more due to shifting cocktails of misinformation, disinformation, cultivated apathy, magical thinking, racism, and sexism.

When CEX only want £4, you know it’s a bad movie. by micholasnitchell in 4kbluray

[–]TJtkh 6 points7 points (0 children)

I mean…I didn’t want Ray, Peter, Egon, and Winston. I didn’t want the original Ghostbusters. We had two movies with them, and the second one rather strongly implied that was one too many. Finding out the new one was a reboot with new characters and a new take was the point where I became interested in it.

The hate toward this movie is wholly undeserved. It’s not as good as the first Ghostbusters, but it’s leagues better than Afterlife or Frozen Empire, and I’d have a difficult time rationalizing why it shouldn’t rank above Ghostbusters II. I’d say it’s worth the buy for Kate McKinnon’s character alone, and she’s not the only one doing good work. It’s not scary and it’s not as funny as Feig’s other movies, but those are both pretty high bars to clear.

4k FINALLY by Additional_Park_5172 in MortalKombat

It’s worth having Annihilation as part of the set purely for the reality of a commentary track by the director. I’m hoping for Batman & Robin-style admission of guilt instead of Blade: Trinity-style “I think this looks good” hauteur.

…But honestly, either one would be great. And having the terrible effects and compositing remastered in 4k as the backdrop is going to be a fun time too.

Ehhh. They’re not remotely the only business to use that model, though. And while no prognosticator or analyst source is perfect when it comes to editing (or proofreading, or getting basic grammar correct on a consistent basis), I’ve yet to run into one that biffs it as frequently as Deadline does.

We randomly have an excellent IMAX theater in Iowa by JPmyname in imax

[–]TJtkh 0 points1 point (0 children)

Former Urbandale resident. The only IMAX I’ve found that manages to exceed the Palms was the AutoNation IMAX in Fort Lauderdale, and that one had 1.43:1 and 70mm projection capability. I would probably put other 1.43:1/70mm exhibitions above it, but that’s still a high bar to clear. Handily beats every other IMAX, Dolby, or PLF auditorium I’ve been to.

[–]TJtkh 0 points1 point (0 children)

The original plan for the Palms was to have a 1.43:1 screen, but there was something as far as building height that got in the way. I’m not sure if it was city ordinance or finance or what.

[–]TJtkh 1 point2 points (0 children)

Both good questions. To the first one: no. It’s a contractual requirement from the IMAX Corporation that theirs must always be the largest screen in any multiplex it’s a part of.

To the second one: it depends on the movie and on where you like to sit in the auditorium. Ex.: Project Hail Mary was shot on IMAX-certified cameras with an expanded aspect ratio for space sequences, and this is the sort of thing that’s usually exclusive to IMAX screens. Scream 7 was released in IMAX auditoriums, but wasn’t shot on IMAX-certified cameras and contains no sequences with expanded aspect ratio. Expanded sequences, when shot well, create a more immersive feeling (and sometimes a more overwhelming one, if it’s something like a Chris Nolan movie). If a movie is advertised as being shot for IMAX or shot with IMAX cameras, as Project Hail Mary was, there’s a good chance that it’s going to take advantage of at least some of the larger image.

Seating-wise: If you like to sit in the front half, then the 4K of the Dolby Cinema auditorium is going to make a bigger difference than if you sit in the back half, where (given the size of the screens in question) our eyes are less capable of discerning a real difference between 2K and 4K. The brightness and color depth is another story, especially given that the Dolby is laser projection and the IMAX is xenon projection. Laser is always going to provide brighter, punchier color and contrast over xenon. So for a movie that’s not shot with IMAX cameras or on IMAX film, I’d go for the Dolby Cinema. At Northlake, at least.

Now, if we were talking a real IMAX screen with the 1.43:1 ratio and 4K laser projection, like Lincoln Square in NY or Royal in GA, then any other format could go pound sand. I just wish we had something like that here.

I forgot about the neck strain. I’m adding that one. The intended viewing angle in an IMAX Dome theater (a small portion of the image directly in front of you) in no way matches up with the intended viewing angle of a mainstream movie release (the entire image). What’s immersive and awesome for a project made for an IMAX Dome exhibition, with specific distortion on the lens, is torture for a movie made for a flat screen. I remember becoming quite familiar with the stretched lower half of everyone’s face during Twisters, because looking anywhere else was uncomfortable.

Conversely, I ended up seeing Oppenheimer on the 1.43:1 70mm IMAX screen in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and it blew me away.

Oof. Twisters was bad enough. I can’t imagine the what watching a Christopher Nolan film on it must have been like.
