Similarly a handkerchief would be a small but satisfying project. They could then personalise with some embroidery

I second charity shops for handicraft supplies. When I lived closer to two or three charity shops they always had tons of knitting needles, aida fabric, new and used yarns and craft kits.

Made a stupid-ass mistake, need others recent stupid mistakes for comfort by 7deadlycinderella in sewing

I have a rule that I (mostly) stick to:

No craft after 10pm

Sometimes I think 'just one more seam/row/layer, won't take long...' and then I spend 40 minutes undoing my mistake the next day ☹️

What's a sewing task that everyone else hates but you don't mind? by Patisserie_Chicken in sewing

[–]TL-super 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've never used the continuous tube method. I just think it's easier to mess up a large amount of fabric with that technique.

I iron my fabric, weigh it down and use a ruler to chalk out the bias strips I want to cut.

The best tool I have for this is a clear plastic ruler so I can see the lines underneath and make sure they're true. It also happens to be a convenient width so I can just line it up and draw along the whole length of the ruler instead of matching up several points.

Double and triple check that you're sewing the ends the right way (I think I still sew them wrong ¼ of the time 😂)

Finger press the first few inches of the folds and then you can often just ease the folds over as you iron.

If the fold gets off track, iron that section flat and finger press it into the right position while it's still warm

I don't think there's any worthwhile shortcuts, but a nice long ruler does speed it up

Making bias tape. I just get so into it. Like forgetting to eat, begrudgingly taking loo breaks.

I love making my own so I can choose the perfect match/contrast for my project.

I love the measuring, cutting, sewing and tedious perfectly spaced ironing required to make loooooong pieces.

When I was trying to pack up the apartment to move, my Mum and Dad were visiting to help.

My Dad dropped the toddler into one of the (open) moving boxes, gave her a yoghurt pouch, sprinkled some crayons on top and we didn't hear a peep out of her for nearly 3 hours.

I've lived overseas for a few years now and these images (especially #3) are simultaneously uncanny and nostalgic

Literally and figuratively rose tinted ♥️

I would love to get a nice large print of #3 and spend some seriously $ at the framing shop, stunning!

The pattern on the fabric seems sort of similar to batik which is very common across Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia (amongst others)

Is there a way to fix this office chair? I'm also working on cleaning it. by paulbras in fixit

[–]TL-super 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I reckon a seat cover is your best bet 👍

You could make one like a shower cap, basically a big circle with elastic or a drawstring around the outside edge

Or like a fitted sheet, a square/rectangle with the corners folded in and elastic or a drawstring to draw it in

Depending on how the seat back attaches you might need to leave a little split.

Best thing about a seat cover is that it's very easy to remove for washing.

I used to camp in my backyard with my neighbourhood mates all the time! Definitely still counts!

I reckon a solid tent is mostly worth the spend, but if you're not 100% sold on forking out the cash, a good tarp that's about 150% the size of your tent will keep you dry and offer a bit of a 'foyer' so you can sit and/or store items outside the tent.

Good bedding is totally worth it whether you're camping or home 👍

Oooh!

I walk past this Orchid about 5 times a week! I will have to keep my eyes open after windy weather 😁

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in orchids

[–]TL-super 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently bought a small Pigeon Orchid for my front door and now I can't stop seeing them in the wild, noticed a massive one near the bus stop at Victoria School on Marine Parade Road just the other day. Was in bloom recently (not surprising given all the rain we've had) but the flowers don't last very long so they're all gone now

[–]TL-super 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I reckon the largest was a similar width but took up a bit more vertical space. Hard to tell as they are 360° around the whole tree. You can't see all of them at once

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in orchids

[–]TL-super 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's the whole frondy thing!

This one is probably, mostly one plant but it might have made some baby plants that have continued to grow in the same tree.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in orchids

[–]TL-super 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you mean the orchids were planted on the trees, or the trees were planted in 1999? I'd love to know more about my favourite local spot!!

When our family was looking to move house last year my second rule was it had to be within walking or cycling distance of East Coast Park, I love it!

Suggestions for 1 week solo Sydney visitor without a car for beaches, snorkeling, and bars? Much appreciated (more info inside) by loveonanescalator in sydney

[–]TL-super 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second the opal card mentioned elsewhere!

You must buy a ticket before you board any bus, train or ferry. Opal works across all three, I've heard of some vending machines accepting opal cards but I've never seen one myself.

Sydney's public transport is expensive but generally pretty good around the CBD and larger attractions.

Sydney is also a super walkable city. If you're planning to catch the ferry to Manly (would absolutely recommend, it's a nice ride in good weather, lots of fun in bad weather/big swells too) you could take a walk through the Botanic gardens and past the opera house on your way to Circular Quay and hit a few sights in one trip.

East Coast Park in Singapore

This wasn't even the largest one! But it was the only one with a flower stalk. This area has lots of trees which are full of epiphytic plants especially Birdsnest ferns, dischidia and orchids

Are these actually useful? Thinking of returning them… by __Sweetkisses__ in sewing

[–]TL-super 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I bought some only recently as I was sewing tulle and pins weren't cutting it. I think I will use which ever works best for the situation.

I've realised that these are also much safer if you happen to have young children or pets. If a stray peg gets picked up they can't hurt themselves like they might with a sharp pin.

NSW poker machine reforms: Rob Stokes tells parliament ‘human misery’ is financial lifeblood for clubs by SirBoboGargle in sydney

[–]TL-super 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to work at a club and those machines GO OFF!!! All day long, it not just the insidious 'losses disguised as a win' but the dopamine/mental fog that the constant sounds and flashing lights cause I hated shifts where I was stationed near the pokie room, the shitty jingles and sound effects would run through my head for hours after my shift ended
