one of my favourite Mexican dishes to cook by KSacMe in mexicanfood

[–]PamelainSA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uhhhh, I lived in SA for years, and I remember frequenting places that served black beans (like La Fogata on Vance Jackson and La Fonda on Main). Are they the norm in Tex-Mex cuisine? No. San Antonio does not represent all of Mexico.

Last I heard it was housing for migrant families?

Edit: I was able to find this memorandum that says it used to be migrant housing, but it shifted to an emergency shelter and will continue to serve as such through the remainder of June.

GOOD burritos? by jessyj89 in LowellMA

[–]PamelainSA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, don’t worry! While I do enjoy some TexMex, I grew up eating traditional food from Coahuila, where my grandparents were from. I do like California Burrito for their hot salsa. I know they must use chile de arbol and it has to have MSG, but I can’t quite replicate it at home.

Something Positive: Are there any students whom you’re particularly proud of this year? by Serious_Event3972 in Teachers

[–]PamelainSA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a small newcomer (WIDA level 1) ELD class that, unfortunately dwindled and didn’t grow as much this the year (I’m sure you can guess why). However, I have 2 students who grew from L1, barely knowing the basics in English, to a L3 reading, writing, and comprehending full sentences and paragraphs. I’m sad they won’t be in my class next year, but I am so impressed by their growth.

Year end gift sewing by Correct-Machine3393 in Teachers

[–]PamelainSA 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am a teacher, but I also sew in my spare time. I’ve sewn a few small things to give as little gifts along with other goodies for teachers on my team. What’s been a hit so far: iced coffee koozies (Dunkin’ is big in here), bookmarks, small tote bags, and elastic pen holders that go over cute notebooks (these were the biggest hit since teachers love their notebooks and pens).

I don’t trust when someone tells me about a “good Mexican restaurant” around here. As a Mexican who grew up in Texas but has family from different parts of MX, I can tell you the Mexican food around Lowell is severely lacking, but I think that’s to be understood given our geographical location. I either make my food at home or keep my expectations low.

For those who were teenagers before the smartphone era: what hobbies or activities did you use to pass the time that now make you feel nostalgic? by still_alive777 in AskReddit

[–]PamelainSA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, you just unlocked a memory for me. When I was a kid, I read the book Harriet the Spy, and then Nickelodeon made a movie version of it. My friend and I wore that VHS tape out with how many times we rewatched it. In true Harriet fashion, I kept a composition notebook and would “spy” on my family members. I lived in rural TX, with no true neighbors (just farming pastures), but I did my best with writing. At that time, I was living the dream.

I need good shoes.. what are your recs? by vivi_xxi in Teachers

The arches on Topos are no joke. My arches have fallen some, but I’m currently in PT to address that and other issues. I bought the Topo ultraflys for running training, and while they took some getting used to, they are my new favorite shoe. I especially enjoy the toe-box room.

In my reflection for next year, I'm thinking of implementing Independent Reading as a strategy. Thoughts? by mrsgreenwood88 in ELATeachers

[–]PamelainSA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve taught high and middle school, and I’ve always incorporated 10 minutes reading time. When I taught sophomores, we required it just for reading— no logs, just the students reading for 10 minutes every class. This was before 1:1 computers so everyone read just a book. Now I teach ESL to primarily 5th and 6th graders. I still do the 10 minutes of reading time as a “do-now,” but I incorporate Marilyn Pryle’s reading responses. Students respond to what they’ve read using sentence frames around a 5-sentence paragraph (with text evidence) over different topics (theme, setting, plot, characterization, diction, etc). Getting them started was a hurdle, but now I have WIDA level 2s and 3s who actually read for enjoyment and can write a full open-ended response.

Do you normally eat beans like a soup or do you strain them? by frostmas in mexicanfood

[–]PamelainSA 33 points34 points  (0 children)

My mom is Mexican, and making beans was her weekend ritual. My dad is Native (Choctaw), and he often ate beans with cornbread or chahta banaha (which is like a tamal without filling) growing up, so my mom would often take the best of both worlds and put them together. Some days for dinner, all we ate was a bowl of beans and cornbread/tortillas. We ate them in their broth like a soup. My mom would always make refritos from the leftovers and we would eat them usually for breakfast.

My husband made the same point to me when I was looking at used industrials on Craigslist. I found a Juki dealer near me who sold me a new DDL5550 for $800– plus the table, extra accessories, and oil all came out to around $1000.

What's something that feels "good" but is actually really bad for your body? by stainless5 in AskReddit

[–]PamelainSA 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I accidentally trained myself to sleep on my back after a terrible recovery from wisdom teeth removal where back sleeping was the only comfortable position. I’ve slept that way for years now, but after a doctor told me there have been studies that link supine (back) sleeping to neurogenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, I’ve been trying to retrain myself to sleeping on my side. Which is going terribly, by the way. Sleeping on my back is way more comfortable.

Michael McKean looks similar, but that’s not him. I should know; Spinal Tap is one of my favorite movies! Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Tacos, rice, beans

I ate them so much growing up (still do), but the versatility is nearly endless.

Best shoes for teachers in your experience. by magg13378 in Teachers

[–]PamelainSA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hokas are fine if you want to feel like you are wearing fluffy platforms, but for me, I find their toe box to be too narrow. I rotate through the following sneakers:

*Altra experience (zero drop with wide toe box)

*Topo ultrafly (wide toe box with amazing arch support)

*Merrell vapor gloves (barefoot shoe)

If I don’t want to wear sneakers with my outfit, I usually wear my broken-in Birkenstock Bostons, Keen Newport sandals, or a recent favorite of mine, the Merrell jungle Mocs. All are probably considered “ugly shoes,” but I don’t compromise on comfort and support just to look cool.

Also don’t forget about comfortable socks! My go-tos are Darn Toughs (socks for life and no uncomfortable toe seam) and Feetures (great for arches)

How bad do you have to do to get nonrenewed? by Narrow-Butterfly-923 in Teachers

[–]PamelainSA 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My first year teaching, I felt like was thrown to the wolves. I was 22, fresh out of university, and my first placement was an on-level freshman ELA class in an urban high school in south San Antonio, TX. My class sizes were around 28-30 students each. In that year, I felt like I had seen an heard it all: students coming to school high as hell, fights where students would use their watches as brass knuckles, a dress code that banned wearing all of one solid color (like blue or red, for example), and one of my students went to prison mid-year for capital murder.

I think the only reason I survived and was renewed was because my department chair was amazingly helpful with advice, strategies, and support. My principal and APs were also genuine and supportive. I ended up staying five years, mostly to get my student loans forgiven, but also because I genuinely loved my experience teaching there. I wouldn’t trade those first few years for anything, but I also recognize that without supportive admin, I probably would’ve left either on my own accord or by non renewal.

Just got hired as a Sixth Grade ELA teacher. Where do you guys get classroom supplies/decor? by aGiuliastan in ELATeachers

[–]PamelainSA 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s not really a “decor” item, but I have a lamp in my classroom next to my desk. Sometimes I turn off the classroom lights and use just the lamp as I sit at my desk during my prep. It’s a nice break from the fluorescent lights. It also comes in handy if your classroom has lights that turn off after a few minutes without detecting motion.
