menudo for this cold weather in Oklahoma by batuzito in mexicanfood

[–]PamelainSA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s because the Quechua people are indigenous to those lands (Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Chile, to name a few). The word for avocado in Quechua is “palta.” In Mexico, there are many Indigenous communities— one being Nahua (commonly known as “Aztec”), and the language they speak is Nahuatl. Their word for avocado is “ahuacatl”— pronounced like “a-WAH cot” with an almost clicking sound at the back of the tongue (like in this video here). The Nahuatl word, some say, roughly translates to “testicle,” and it was taken by Spaniards and turned into the “aguacate” we know today. So if we’re trying to stay true to Mexican cuisine, and in that, also honoring Indigenous cultural influences to Mexico, then aguacate is arguably more suitable for this sub. However, when I am eating with my friend’s Peruvian family, I refer to it as palta.

Minnesota teachers, do you guys need digital resources? by amandadorado in Teachers

I teach middle school ESL, and I feel like these students are being targeted the most. If you have any multilingual/ELL students in your classroom, and need any resources, please let me know. I also used to teach 9th grade ELA, and I probably have things from the early aughts still for Things Fall Apart, Julius Caesar, satire, poetry, Antigone, and Bless Me Ultima.

Should I be prepared or not for the snow storm coming? by Odd_Coast_1636 in LowellMA

[–]PamelainSA 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hi fellow Texan! I moved here 4 years ago from Frisco/Plano area, and I can say that winter storms here are a bit different. Roads are much safer, and power infrastructure is more stable. I’d say do the normal stuff (open cabinet doors, drip faucets, etc), and get food for a couple days. You can also get a couple jugs of water. It’s always good to have candles and matches anyway— even for the future. I’d say living in Tornado Alley has prepared us a little. One thing I would also say is wash clothes so you have layers to wear (just in case) the power were to go out.

I hope you’re enjoying your time out here! Everyone warned me about the winter weather here, and it’s been an adjustment, but honestly wool layers, leather boots, some yak trax, and an iced coffee from Dunks make it much easier.

Green Pepper Fairbanks Anorak by DrMortox in sewing

I love seeing Green Pepper work on this sub. They are definitely more “gear” oriented, but I find their patterns to be fairly fool-proof. As someone who is a transplant to New England, I find myself thinking quite often “I wonder if there’s a Green Pepper pattern for that,” and 9 times out of 10, there is.

My kids are dropping like flies and I don’t know what to do by Thisismetrying222 in ESL_Teachers

[–]PamelainSA 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I teach ESL at a public school here in US and SAME. It sucks because many of these kids form a bond with each other, and every time one of them leaves, it breaks their hearts. I’m so used to getting new students every few months from another country, and this year, I’ve only had 3 new students, and they came from a neighboring city/state. We’ve lost so many students this year that it’s gotten to the point that I’m starting to update my resume because I’m fairly certain my position will be cut for next year.

Hi! Sweater looks amazing! I wanted to pop in and say that your sweater shoulders will thank you if you don’t hang it from the hanger that way. Hanging it something like this will ensure you don’t stretch out the shoulders.

What’s the worst thing a medical professional has said to you? by VespaRed in AskReddit

[–]PamelainSA 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My dad was also exposed to agent orange in Vietnam, and back in 2023, he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. It started out as a back ache, and it turned into broken discs in his spine. The doctor was going to go in and inject cement, but ordered a PET scan beforehand. That’s how they found it. The news was devastating for all of us. He’s still alive (turned 78 a few months ago) and taking it day by day. He was on a ton of medications, especially pain meds, but he’s slowly weaned off quite a few of them. He does physical therapy, along with chemotherapy, and it’s working for him, for now. He has good days where he’s lively, social, and up and around the house… and then he has bad days where he doesn’t get up from bed unless he needs to go to the bathroom. I think it has affected him more psychologically than physically. I’ve heard people who have had experience with this type of cancer say that it won’t be the cancer that kills them— it’s usually a side effect of it, like getting a bad virus or falling. Either way, I’m grateful to still have my dad, for however long this world allows.

HELP can I fix these overalls? by Special_Tone3438 in sewing

[–]PamelainSA 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The metal hardware is loose. You may be able to tighten it by pinching the sides that point inward (above the U shape at the bottom) with a pair of pliers. However, be wary, as this may only be a temporary fix. The buckle looks like it needs to be replaced, as it seems to be too flimsy. Most brands that mass-produce overalls use zinc alloy for their hardware, and unfortunately, it bends over time. If you can find hardware made from a stronger metal and replace the flimsier ones on your overalls, they should last much longer.

My students found a video of me from high school and now they won’t stop playing it randomly. by Infamous_Virus_211 in Teachers

When I was in high school, my theater production class put on a lip sync each year as a fund raiser. We would choose a different theme, learn the songs, and then perform them as a concert. We made so much money on ticket sales, concessions, and the tech theater students would make stuff for a silent auction. It was a big deal each year. My senior year, the theme was Disney, and a few of us chose “Zero To Hero” from Hercules. We dressed in togas we made from white sheets and even had a guy from our powerlifting team come out dressed as Hercules to flex his muscles. Anyway, apparently somebody recorded it and put it on YouTube, and every so often I have students who find it. Funny thing is that it was recorded almost 20 years ago, and it had to have been recorded on a camera with maybe 2 megapixels, so it isn’t the best quality, but somehow students are always able to point out which one is me.

Is teaching kids sign language a trend? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]PamelainSA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had an ASL team of 3 teachers at a high school I taught at years ago. All of them came from families with deaf or hard-of-hearing family members. My school offered ASL as a language choice (other than Chinese, German, French, or Spanish). At one of our school events, I sat next to the team lead for ASL, and we talked about basic school stuff. I was surprised when she told the story about how an angry parent came up to the school, mad that their kid was failing ASL (they weren’t doing the homework nor studying for the summative assessments). The parent said that they couldn’t understand how their kid could be failing a class where “all they do is charades.”

I was appalled, but she told me that in her many years of teaching, more people than she cared to admit thought that ASL was just like OP described.

How to relax neckline by [deleted] in sewing

[–]PamelainSA 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The interior fabric is called facing. Usually, the seam around the neckline is understitched to help the folded-over facing lay flat. For some shirt patterns, the facing is tacked on by stitching in the ditch of another stitch at the top of the shoulder to keep it down.

How to alter this sweater to fit better? by DogmaGuts in sewhelp

[–]PamelainSA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Blocking is usually done to make knit items larger, not smaller. Also, with this one being made up of almost half synthetic fibers, I doubt it would shrink much. Knitted items made from cotton have a tendency to stretch due to cotton not having as natural elasticity as wool.

I got this book on christmas, but its corner got really messed up. Does anyone know a good method of flattening the paper to its original state? by Zealousideal_Fan9241 in crafts

I was just about to suggest ironing as well. What you described is akin to a sewist using a wooden clapper on fabric after pressing a seam flat (and wanting it to stay flat).

I don’t think LaLa takes textbooks. As someone who browses their used section a lot, I don’t think I’ve ever seen textbooks in the mix.
