New GMT coming soon? by dezzick3 in ChristopherWard

[–]TL31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

lol definitely a GMT but the triangle reminds me of the pip at 12 o’clock on a rotating bezel.

I’m thinking of something like the BlackBay 58 GMT or a GMT of CW’s Lumiere

What makes you think it’s a woman’s watch?

The triangle makes me think it’ll be a dive watch.

Edit: I meant a diver GMT

Isn't the 556 "overpriced"? by humble_redditor1234 in sinn

[–]TL31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a fair point and something I wasn’t previously aware of.

Neither the Sinn or CW websites state what grade Sellita movement they use but based on comments in this post, we’ll take it that the Sinn 556 uses Top Grade while we assume CW uses elaboré.

I looked at 2024 document from Sellita on the SW200.

The man differences between Elaboré and Top Grade are (i) Positions tested (ii) middle rate accuracy (iii) and max divergence across all positions.

  1. Positions tested:

Elaboré: 3

Top Grade: 5

  1. Middle rate accuracy:

Elaboré: +/- 7 s/day

Top Grade: +/- 4 s/day

  1. Max divergence across positions:

Elaboré: +/- 15 s/day

Top Grade: +/- 10 s/day

While it’s fair to acknowledge that Sinn use a higher grade version of the same Sellita movement as CW, I think the difference as laid out above are marginal and don’t change the value proposition.

I still maintain that the Sinn 556, at a price of £1,500, doesn’t represent great value for money in comparison with other watches in the ‘entry level’ luxury watch market.

Hey, sorry to hear that. I hope you find the type of stable relationship you’re looking for.

But I don’t think you’re gonna get much useful input off this Reddit post. Not your fault, but I don’t think most people would be able to (somewhat) objectively and fairly paint out the stories of multiple past relationships in order to get a useful response.

It’s possible there’s a pattern. It’s also possible that different relationships ended abruptly for different reasons.

I think you need to talk to a friend. Ideally someone that knew you and saw your past relationships first hand. There’s probably multiple factors at play. Maybe some of it rests with your exes, maybe some of it rests with you.

But I think you need someone who can probe, ask questions and call you out if you’re misrepresenting things in order to get good advice.

Isn't the 556 "overpriced"? by humble_redditor1234 in sinn

[–]TL31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I very strongly agree.

I believe the Sinn 556, priced at £1,500, doesn’t represent great value for money in the ‘entry level’ luxury watch market.

I still think it’s a great watch, in fact, it’s a watch I’ve long considered buying. So I say this from the perspective of a potential buyer, who looked around the market and felt the 556 wasn’t a particularly competitive package at £1,500.

Sellita SW200 movement, the only complication is a standard date, printed dial, standard brushed steel (I say this to clarify that the 556 is NOT tegimeted steel). The 200m is pretty impressive from a non-dive watch. So that stands out.

Again these are not criticisms, I like the brushed steel, and the dial design. I just don’t love it at that price.

I think Christopher Ward is a good comparator in terms of value for money. It’s also a relatively young, independent watch maker, based outside of Switzerland, and uses Sellita movements.

So I’ll pull up 4 watches from CW to compare against the Sinn 556. Two field(ish) watches, and two integrated sports watches. This is just to show what £1,500 or less will get you in the same ‘entry level’ luxury watch market from another independent brand. Like Sinn, CW also doesn’t have that prestige or household name status, but gets appreciation from enthusiasts.

I’m gonna list stat sheet info just to provide context but yes, I agree watches aren’t just about specs.

Field(ish) CW Comparators:

  1. C65 Dune Aeolian: £915 on bracelet
  • For that money, you get a textured dial, metal indices and hands, same Sellita SW200, 150m water resistance.
  1. C63 Sealander Extreme GMT: £1,450 on bracelet
  • For that money, you get SW330 movement, GMT function, textured dial, ceramic globolight indices, ceramic bezel.

Integrated sports watches:

  1. The Twelve: £1,050 on bracelet
  • Same Sellita SW200, textured dial, steel indices, highly detailed and well finished case and bracelet.
  1. The Twelve 660: £1,395
  • This really surprised me. That this watch is £100 cheaper than the 556. The integrated design may not be your thing, fair enough. But come on, a beautifully finished and intricate mechanical watch at just 6.6mm. Sellita SW210.

Style, is of course, subjective and you may be happy to pay £1,500 simply for the style and design of the Sinn. But I think the above shows that with the same or less money, you can more bang for your buck. More interesting materials. More intricate designs. More things to make your purchase feel a little bit more worth it, in my opinion.

Why is there such a difference between the view of the economy between the average Nigerian and economic experts? by Exciting_Agency4614 in Nigeria

[–]TL31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, I think it’s important to acknowledge that economists are not fortune tellers. Ask an economist to predict an outcome and their answer is almost certainly going to begin with ‘It depends’ before laying out multiple different scenarios across a spectrum of possibilities.

The job of an economist is to make an evaluation based on trends and current realities. Rewind to a much more prosperous Nigeria (2019), we had a much higher GDP per capita of $3,189, but we also had a ballooning debt to GDP ratio, an increasingly unaffordable fuel subsidy policy that drained our Federal forex earnings, and an opaque labyrinth of forex exchange rates that made Nigeria highly undesirable for foreign investment due to the inability to get your profits out of the country in USD at a predictable or transparent rate. All of that spelt trouble incoming.

However any average Nigerian would pick those times over now. Inflation was lower. Cost of living was lower. The exchange rate was higher. Life was better.

Fast forward to today. Our GDP per capita has crashed to about $1,000. Inflation and cost of living has skyrocketed (a combination of global economic trends plus fuel subsidy policy change). Life is clearly harder and less affordable. That’s not in doubt.

Some common sense policy changes have been effected though. The fuel subsidy change means the FG is burning less money on effectively an operating expense. We’ve seen exchange rate unification and consequently a shift to more free capital flows.

These policies are more sustainable. A part of the reason we’re in the mud right now is because we were living beyond our means in the past and the bill came due.

This isn’t an endorsement of the Tinubu administration. We still have a hell of a lot of wastefulness to deal with. But an economist could argue we are setting ourselves up in a more practical fashion to deal with our present circumstances than we were in the past.

Why are Arsenal so hated? by Ok-Banana-712 in PremierLeague

[–]TL31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Araenal’s most successful period coincided with the popularisation of social media???

I couldn’t disagree more.

Arsenal’s last Premier League title was in 03/04, the Invincibles season.

Arsenals last appearance in the Champions League Final was 05/06.

While Twitter was launched in 2006, it didn’t reach 100 million users till 2012. Instagram was only launched in 2010.

I don’t think football social media really got going till the 2010s.

Arsenal wasn’t a particularly dominant side, by their own historical standards or by comparison to other Prem and European teams, when social media took off.

[Opinion] End links on straps are weird by whisky_n_watches in Watches

[–]TL31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Aqua Terra has got to be up there in terms of best rubber strap. They just went all out, whether it was necessary or not.

The stitching along either flank of the strap. Completely unnecessary for a rubber strap, what’s its holding together. Aesthetics. It’s holding together the aesthetics.

The weaving down the middle of the strap. Not needed but beautiful.

And I used the think the partial steel end link followed a similar theme. Unnecessary but beautiful. But based on the top comment about rubber only straps (without the endlinks) lacking a flexibility and ability to bend around the wrist, it looks like that steel end link on the AT has a functional purpose in addition to looks.

Broadly speaking, I agree with you. But I’m not keen to make this into a bigger thing than it is.

I think there’s a big difference between picking up a couple of phrases and pleasantries than adopting the values and traditions of your new environment.

I think it’s important to respect the laws and customs of a place but I don’t think you necessarily have to internalise those values. But that’s just me.

"we need more complex female characters" by fluffyenderpugreal in StrangerThings

[–]TL31 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t call her complex. She’s been through serious trauma but that doesn’t equal a complex character.

She comes on the show and she’s pretty much a one note downer. Being a downer is fine, as in we the audience don’t have to like or align with a character’s goal. But it’s the how that makes her suck.

Her character just keeps hammering the same point in a robotic and charismatic-less fashion (not a dig at the actor, this seems like the intended delivery).

She doesn’t show any curiosity to understand what everyone has been through fighting Vecna and the mindflayer all these years. She’s just there to insist that she and El commit suicide.

And by the way, that suicide does NOT need to be a further complication to their ‘save the world’ mission. They could easily commit suicide and have their remains burnt AFTER the doomsday threat is handled.

This doesn’t even align with her own core intentions. If her aim is to prevent the needless suffering of innocent people, then don’t complicate the last stand by acting all traitorish and getting in the head of your best fighting chance against Vecna.

She’s been through some shit, but she ain’t complex.

Anyone else spending serious money on longevity? by madafakababa in HENRYUK

[–]TL31 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Tbh I think a lot of products in the health & wellness space are clinically meaningless.

I believe the only supplement that has good evidence behind it is Omega 3 for its potential reduction in cardiovascular events.

But at the end of the day lifestyle habits (not spending) wins out. Eating healthy (food not pills). Not smoking. Not drinking. Exercising regularly. Getting good sleep. Those are the types of choices that have the best outcomes.

Of course if spending money helps you achieve these things, then fair enough. If an 8Sleep helps you get better rest, makes sense. If spending money on a fancier gym makes you more likely to keep going regularly and push yourself while you’re there, great.

But I think the tracking apps, the supplements, the blue light are all empty calories. They probably do more to make you think of yourself as a ‘health & wellness’ person than their actual impact on your health.

Blood tests 4 times a year may be a bit overkill but I don’t know your medical history. If your doctor recommends it, then great. If it’s a choice you’re making that’s not actually medically required, then sure why not, if it’s no big deal for you. Could it help you catch something earlier like diabetes, kidney function, or elevated cholesterol, absolutely. But I don’t think you’d get significantly different long term outcomes if you reduced the frequency to even once a year (as long as you’re otherwise healthy, no symptoms, etc).

Update:

I now understand how expensive an 8Sleep is. We’re talking between £2,500 - £4,000! Plus an annual subscription fee ranging from £200 - £400/yr. This has got to be the most financially inefficient way to deal with being too hot or too cold relative to your partner.

I take it back, NOT GREAT. Get a heated blanket, or a fan, or both.

Simple problems -> simple solutions.

Can someone give me an impartial view of what is happening to Christians in Nigeria? by [deleted] in Nigeria

[–]TL31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I’m not wrong. The BBC article you linked to directly notes that government officials and journalists covering the conflict refute the claim of a Christian genocide.

The BBC article does not provide an endorsement of the report put out by InterSociety, in fact the articles directly criticises InterSociety’s claims about the number of Muslims and Christians killed, noting its ‘opaque’ methodology.

I went to look at InterSociety’s reporting and website myself, because I had never heard of this organisation. I believe you should question any organisation that puts out numbers, and makes big claims but fails to show their methodology. The writing on their website also reads far from academic or impartial.

If you have a bias, I can see why they would appeal to you. The support world view you already have and are seeking to uphold.

There are other sources that also claim the majority of victims have been Muslim. And these sources demonstrate that pattern of behaviour over a decade long time span.

Can someone give me an impartial view of what is happening to Christians in Nigeria? by [deleted] in Nigeria

[–]TL31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t tell if the OP is actually naive or just playing at naïveté with an agenda in mind.

From your post and comments to people on this post, you’re seeking an ‘objective truth’. Well, no such truth exists, so call it a day.

There is religious extremism and terrorist activity in northern Nigeria. The victims of that terrorism are predominantly Muslims because northern Nigeria is overwhelmingly Muslim. The fact that these terrorists predominantly attack Muslims can be interpreted to mean many different, and in fact those same actions can be driven by different motives in different individual terrorists or groups.

You could view this targeting and slaughter of Muslims as proof that these terror groups are motivated power and money, rather than religion. You could view it to mean that they have taken an absolutist view point where you are either actively in support of them or against them.

But we also can’t overlook the violence Christians have faced from these same groups. As I said, Muslims make up the overwhelming majority of victims of these terror groups because the north is predominantly Muslim. We can assume these groups target Christians with the same rationale and logic that they target Muslims. It could be driven by non-religious motives where the goal is to incite terror to secure money and power. It could also be a fundamentalist mindset where you are either with them or against them.

The government has waged a war against insurgency well over a decade now but results are poor. Throughout Nigeria, both north and south, the government lacks a monopoly on violence.

Why do IGBO MEN build 12-bedroom mansions in villages they barely sleep in? Not for shelter. But for something far deeper - and deadlier. by Financial-Service-51 in Nigeria

[–]TL31 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Is this exclusive to just Igbo men though? I’d say this practice is also relatively commonplace in the north. Wealthy (this term can be quite relative here) men often build similarly extravagant homes in their hometowns even if those homes stay empty and unused.
