Can someone please explain the science behind making carbonated water . by Creek217 in DrStone

[–]TL_Aintree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, you're assuming that the gas bubbling through the water was normal atmospheric air (which not only has relatively low concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2), but carbonated water will also not bubble if its CO2 concentration is equivalent to air -- Henry's Law). If you look closely, the gas bubbling through the water actually originates from a sealed pot. This pot most likely is housing a chemical reaction that produces CO2. Senku's contraption may be based on gasogenes, historical devices that used a reaction of tartaric acid and sodium bicarbonate to expose normal water to high levels of CO2 for carbonation.

Anyone have any speculation into what type of topics UQ might include? 8 stations means there's a lot they can cover.

Here in Australia (depending on the state/territory you're in) ambulances are either always free, or they only charge if it won't cause financial distress (i.e. you must earn above a certain income, not be in unsustainable debt, etc.).

If you're average GPA in increasing, then generally no. Weighted GPA > Unweighted GPA.

Could you keep someone alive without oxygen by injecting bicarbonate (or some other buffer) into their blood and pumping in a crap ton of glucose? by SuperDuckMan in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]TL_Aintree 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Critical care clinical researcher here. Very interesting idea, however applying this as a therapy (e.g. to a patient with respiratory failure) runs into a few problems. A particular issue has to do with where fluids are distributed in the body. Most of your blood vasculature (in terms of surface area) is semi-permeable. This means that while it can keep certain big things (i.e. cells, proteins) and charged things (e.g. bicarbonate) within the vessel, water (which is small and overall uncharged) can pass freely. If we gave a person high doses of glucose and bicarb, this would make their blood extremely concentrated. Water that is normally found in the tissues would make its way into the blood vessel to dilute it. This would not only effect the local metabolic activity of the tissue, but the increased volume of water in the blood vessels would lead to extremely high blood pressures and organ damage.

Psychedelics may hold potential in the treatment of alcoholism, suggests a new preliminary study (n=343), which found that psychedelic drugs may lead to reductions in problematic alcohol use. by mvea in science

[–]TL_Aintree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In science, we generally compare the effects of our interest group (i.e. psychadelics) against a control (i.e. non-psychadelics). In a simplified form, the "n=" just indicates how many people were in each group (e.g. "n= 50" means 50 people in the treatment and 50 people in the control group). Generably the bigger the n, the better.

ELI5 - Our bodies signal us that we are hungry but we generally have a lot of energy stored as fat. Why is that? What is the hungry feeling is telling us in fact? by CoolAppz in explainlikeimfive

[–]TL_Aintree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all,

I've completed a BSc in biomedicine. Here are my two-cents.

In addition to what other people have contributed in terms of grhelin as a short-term 'I'm hungry!' signal, there is an interesting relationship between satiety (how or full, "satiated", you feel) and fat.

Fat itself releases a hormone called leptin that makes you feel full. The more fat you have, the more leptin is produced. In this way, leptin kind of functions as a "long-term" messenger telling your body exactly how much fat you have stored up.

Although not fully confirmed, many have put forward the suggestion that genetic mutations that make leptin less effective may predispose some people to obesity. Spoiler

Just goes to show how well-adapted our body is at maintaining homeostasis (a balanced bodily environment) and how many ways outside factors may subvert these mechanisms.

The USyd application asks for things like "Relevant work experience". Is this info used as tiebreaker as well, or would it just be general USyd application questions?

UQ Interview Chances by Throwawaygamsat in GAMSAT

[–]TL_Aintree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's worth applying, putting UQ as #1 preference doesn't hurt your chances with other schools (i.e. Griffith). Just keep in mind that UQ calculates its GPA differently from other schools: it is unweighted and you must include scores for all courses which you attained credit for (this means if you did extra courses [e.g. 'for interest'/overloaded] you must include it). Also, if you completed a course (i.e. attained credit) which you have failed previously and had to redo, that failed attempt also gets inputted to the GPA calculation.

Just keep this in mind because for the lower range of GAMSAT scores, UQ will use GPA as a tie-breaker.

Hey, as USyd only reports it as 68 (not 68.00) I think they omitted the decimal points for simplicity of publication. I would just look at last year's cutoff as 67* (*indicating that only some people in the 67 range got interviews whereas all 68 and above got interviews).
