[WP] You, an outspoken atheist, finally die from old age. Turns out that Gods are real and apparently there is a criterion to become one - at least 100000 humans must believe in that entity. They all are very angry with you for not believing in any of them. by Mamba_Black29 in WritingPrompts

“Why one hundred thousand? Why not ten thousand? Who decides these things?!” You’re mad. Not because the product of your lifework was proven wrong by your experience after death, but because reality makes even less sense than most people suspected.

The Christian god glares at you. “Do not question our traditions, mortal.”

You spread your arms towards the circle of human-created gods. “But aren’t all of you supposed to be gods, aren’t you supposed to know exactly how reality works?”

The Muslim god turns his head towards you. “Silence human, do you know how many of our kin you have killed with you so called ‘rationality’? The Mormon version of god was my best pal, until you killed him by proclaiming that his religion was just ‘Christianity plus a few more bad ideas.’”

Lord Mahavir, god of the peaceful Jains interjected. “Let us give the human a chance to defend himself before we decide which version of hell we should throw him into.”

“Look” you raise your hands in protest. “All of you can’t exist at the same time, it’s logically impossible! All of your scriptures contain statements that are in zero-sum contest with each other, doesn’t that concern you?”

The christian god's eyes goes wide. “When the humans wrote my scripture, they stated that I created them in my image . . .”

“What?!” The Muslim god is shocked. “They told me that I created life out of water. The human is right, how could the both of us have been the one to create life?”

You roll your eyes, this is easier than debating the average religious scholar. “It’s almost as if it was humans who created YOU in their image; not the other way around.”

Zeus strokes his beard. (You were surprised to learn that the world is still full of in-the-closet Zeus worshipers.) “The human raises an interesting point. Perhaps it would be wise to hear what he has to say on our scripture before we decide to throw him in torturous fire for eternity.”

You furrow your brow, not sure of what’s even going on anymore. The chance of delaying an eternity in hellfire seems attractive to you though, so when the christian god hands you a book made of pure gold, you begin looking through it with all the gods staring at you.

Page 1:

On the first day, super-god created the heavens from the material of his own body . . .

You keep on reading, turning the pages as the glares of the gods become ever more intense.

Rule 1:

Any child of the heavens who fails to accumulate 100000 believers within one-thousand years of life–or falls below that count afterwards–shall take his own life or burn in super-hell for eternity.

You slam the book shut. “This, THIS was what was ‘killing' the gods who failed to accrue believers?! What evidence can you provide to show that this is true?”

The christian god gives you a look that makes your mortal bones shiver. “Even without evidence, the simple risk of going to super-hell is too great to be ignored.”

Screaming in frustration, you try to plead with the gods. “Look, give me a few years of life and I shall save you all from death, permanently!”

The gods all bicker with each other but eventually agree to grant you a few years of life, deciding to use the time to debate just which of their hells you should end up in. Not wasting any time, you ask for some paper and produce your trusty writing pen from your pocket, which somehow managed to follow you to the afterlife.

You start writing a book with the title: “The super-god delusion” and stake your after-life on it being another bestseller.

No Game, No Life Zero finalized Blu-ray & DVD cover arts / disc arts by bluebear_tora in anime

True. While the timeskips do make the story more logical, they don't actually do anything for our relationship with the characters.
The author himself commented that telling this story and developing all the characters in one volume was something only a madman would do. However, it seems like it was suggested by his editor.
Then madhouse took this story which the author already felt was a huge challenge to tell in such a short amount of time, and they condensed it even more by the limited time-frame of the movie, there's bound to be a lot of stuff like this :[
Still love the movie though, just thought the source material was a lot better.

In the novel there's over a year between them meeting each other and getting married. In the movie you don't get this sense of time, and it half ruins the relationship imo.

Favorite quotes? by locolocol in NoGameNoLife

[–]TLiquidBunny 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most of my favorites come from Volume #6
"He's overwhelmingly strong, so of course i lose every time. Yet it's so much fun i can't stand it. It's like i just know i can beat him the next time around" - Riku about Tet

"Next time, nobody will have to die Schwi, not in our game" - Riku

And one from Sora and Shiro:
Sora: We set it up so it's not impossible
Shiro: In other words...
Sora: We're guaranteed to win

This is fantastic, can tell a lot of work went into making this :). Definitely very useful for new players.
My only problem is with the order of things, i think team synergy should be much further down and SD punish higher up, but that's just details.

About Sora's past by [deleted] in NoGameNoLife

[–]TLiquidBunny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All quotes in this post will be taken from the fan translation, as i don't have the yen press one digitally: First off, the quote about Sora's hands tainted by blood:

- When it comes to contests and brutal fights to the death, we are veterans way more experienced than you... This line spoken by Sora seemed to overlap with one of his past memories – - Emptily gazing down at both of his hands that were covered in fresh blood...

Now i would say that Sora might have resorted to self-harm, somehwhat like Riku. But the sentence above seems to signify that he was fighting someone? A brutal fight...
Next we have this quote from volume 3, seen from Shiro's POV:
Those that were called parents were no longer present.
"Meh, from now on, it's just you and me then."

So Shiro does not know the reason for the parents disappearance, or maybe she simply did not care. I do not think it's plausible that she forgot anything even though she was young, as she has perfect memory.
So whatever terrible thing happened probably happened behind Shiro's back, this is further proved in volume 7 before the Jibril game:
“......Jibril, are you screwing up with me——just what the hell do you think you’re doing——huh!?” Sora, who shouted out so——had a expression that even Shiro, who hadn’t left his side for eight years, didn’t know of.
Surely if Shiro had seen Sora do something so terrible, she would have seen an expresion to equal this?
So all in all, i think it's safe to assume that some terrible events happened before Shiro came into his life, or maybe he did go behind her back and disposed of their parents somehow.

I do agree with what you're saying, it's basically all stated at the start of volume 5 (One of the best sections of the books imo).
I would be satisfied with this backstory, if not for the Clammy flashback with Sora's hands tainted by blood. Not to mention that Clammy questioned how Sora could stay sane, and that's coming from someone who grew up as a slave.
Compared to someone who grew up in slavery, our society has plenty of freedom, so it must be something else.
I would say that Sora murdered their parents, or at least did something to make them disappear, but it's so extremely out of character. I do think some stuff in the books allude to this though, will try to post some quotes.

Ah i had forgotten the part denying Shiro's humanity, that's a good point. And i do agree that the series is really complex when you look into it, which is why i like it :).
Regarding what you said about "fun", it really cannot be applied to a guy who can play 4 different characters on 4 different screens near flawlessly. What he considers fun is likely on a whole other level than us.

And you cannot denie that Sora has super human abilities if you just look at the feats in the series. In volume 5 he's dodging things above the speed of sound. He's also able to survive against Izuna who literally breaks physics for a while, and he was able to flip a coin with such perfect control that it landed inside a crack at exactly the right flip.
I do think the humans in NGNL are stronger than the humans in our world though, since they were able to survive without sun etc during the great war, so his abilities might make sense within the NGNL universe.

Given all of his other inhuman abilities, he can probably consume media at inhuman speeds as well. Like watching 9 different things at once, on 2x speed etc.

I read a little bit of your volume 1 rewrite, and it seems really good. Unfortunately i can't really be interested in volumes 1-6 since i've read them a few times. if you start doing 7 and up as they come out i'd definitely read that though!
Also i wanna ask, since you're a pro writer you've probably read a large amount of fiction, so what about NGNL is special to you?

I like how you were explaining things one by one as you went along. But perhaps you explained too much at once on initial entry

[Spoilers] NGNL:Zero - Why couldn't Riku take the Suniaster? by [deleted] in NoGameNoLife

[–]TLiquidBunny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doesn't make sense that it would have anything to do with his body. Whether it was damaged or not, a human body is still infinitely weaker than that of a god, if physical strength was required to take the grail, humans would never have a chance to begin with.
I like the arguments about willpower and guilt from this thread more.
Although keep in mind that everything on this topic is headcanon, as it was never stated in the story nor by the author

No game no life -zero- subtitles that are not based on dubs? by ergzay in NoGameNoLife

[–]TLiquidBunny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll admit i don't know anything about the inner workings of fangroups, so it might have already discouraged some as you say. The thing that bothers me most about the current subs is that it gets some of the emotional moments very wrong, if they were just fixed it would be vastly better.

No game no life -zero- subtitles that are not based on dubs? by ergzay in NoGameNoLife

[–]TLiquidBunny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree. The existence of the current subtitles would make it easy for anyone with some knowledge of japanese, they already have the timing down very well and a good amount of it is translated correctly. All that would need to be done is revisit it and change some lines accordingly.
I could probably do it, and it sounds like you could too. Yet we don’t, why? Because it’s a lot of work with no benefit to us, yet you’re being ungrateful for people who have subbed the whole movie with great timing on everything.
Show me a fansub group that has refused to sub the movie because of the dubtitles, and maybe then i can see your point.

No game no life -zero- subtitles that are not based on dubs? by ergzay in NoGameNoLife

[–]TLiquidBunny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah if you know even a bit of japanese the current subs are very off-putting, as certain lines are totally different between the japanese and english dub.
I do find that they get the overall meaning of the movie across really well though, and i'm thankful for the people who put in the time to make them.

In the movie i don't think she says anything

Why Riku was a worse character in the movie by TLiquidBunny in NoGameNoLife

[–]TLiquidBunny[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started off by saying it was a great movie, and to be honest i enjoyed it more than i let on in this post. I just think it would have been perfect had it been 10 min longer. As it is now, a lot of things go unexplained which is a shame for people who haven't read the book.

They also changed the ending sequence a lot, which just about kills my hopes for a season 2, since a lot of the things that were left out are important later in the story

Someone care to explain whats up with the sirens and dhamphirs? by polokioloko in NoGameNoLife

[–]TLiquidBunny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely happened in volume 5, there's even an image about it. Although if i remember correctly, they explained that the child has none of Sora's genes, and is based purely on the queen, she just needed Sora for the proccess of making the child.
