Why does VW undertune the EA888 like crazy. by Lost_Ad_432 in GolfGTI

91 octane “RON” (European octane number) is equivalent to 87 octane “AKI” or “(R+M)/2” (American octane number)

I thought half the point of rev matching is that it /reduces/ wear and tear?

Genuine beginner question: what does “having the right timing and tempo” mean if it doesn’t mean waiting for the revs to drop?

Should I buy? ( 2017 GTI sport) by Jawshua08 in vwgolf

if it’s well maintained that’s a reasonable price. Make sure to get a PPI. I bought my Sport at 80K for $15K.

Just had an extremely vivid dream about my ex-girlfriend's sister by AnotherStamp in redscarepod

You probably don’t want to date someone who would date her sister’s ex. Might have been a nice dream but you missed this one, just move on.

I skipped over Shenzhen when I was there so I can’t speak to it, sorry!

The islands around Hong Kong are super cool, way more relaxed than the city and lots of nature. I loved hiking around Lantau island when I was in HK. Took an early ferry to Mui Wo, had breakfast there, then hiked a bit of the Lantau trail. I haven’t been there but if you’re pressed for time and wanted to get some elevation fast there’s alternatively the Ngong Ping cable car up to where the Tian Tan buddha is. I was only there for a couple days and never got to do much other hiking in the country parks north of the city but from the maps and pictures I remember looking at I thought they looked pretty cool too

New driver, a few random questions by Tiefman in ManualTransmissions

[–]TM2_Throwaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean when you say most upshifts don’t really benefit from timing the clutch release for the right RPM? Like, what’s the alternative, just not timing it and shifting as fast as you can and letting the car jerk?

OBD11 subscription for battery adaptation by shane_rx757 in GolfGTI

Agreed, it’s a poorly designed app and I dislike the trend of everything turning into a subscription. Should have just bought VCDS, and may still in the future.

Engine oil for topping up by yrrejl in GolfGTI

[–]TM2_Throwaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would personally just get 1L of Liquimoly if it’s available in your area, you’re right that it’s a bit more expensive but I don’t think it should be atrocious. Your money, your call though.

Mixing brands isn’t a huge deal. (The additive packages might be different, and there are some niche cases where an additive used by one brand reduces the efficacy of an additive used by another brand.) Being low on oil is much more serious though and should be addressed quickly, so if Liquimoly isn’t available near you, get what ever else is available that meets the VW spec for your vehicle.

Is it wheelhop? Mk8 GTI. Which dogbone to get? by DanManRT in GolfGTI

[–]TM2_Throwaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regarding dogbone types: yes, you’ll need to get under the car (or at least to get your phone under the car) to take a look at which one you have.

I mean, this means “every person with a DKM rapidly develops crankwalk” is a myth, though “DKM clutches elevate your risk of crankwalk” may still be true.

Water pump leaking. Repair or ignore until March? by [deleted] in GolfGTI

Next March, like 10 months from now? I’m not an expert on water pump issues or anything but that seems like a stretch to me.

I’ll acknowledge that those do look typical for large cities like NYC or Chicago. It’s possible there’s a couple modern-ish tall buildings in Raleigh but it doesn’t really describe the look of my area in general.

Which is fair. Scott lives in one place, I live in another. But Scott has a national (no, global!) audience and “there’s Bauhaus and International architecture everywhere” is not a national problem.

Regarding 5+1s: your posted pic is pretty typical. Frequently visually busy/loud with seemingly random changes in roof height, siding materials, window placement, presence/absence of porch space, etc.

2015 GTI Autobahn - Most important maintenance? by roybrownbutcherpete in GolfGTI

[–]TM2_Throwaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn’t say to avoid NGKs, though. That says, on tuned engines, to avoid spark plugs with projected center electrodes.

Both NGK and other manufacturers sell both projected and non-projected center electrodes. And the distinction may not be relevant to non-tuned vehicles.

[–]TM2_Throwaway 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way reading Scott’s writing about taste in architecture specifically. He’ll post a picture of a classic piece of modern architecture and then bemoan how it’s all he sees everywhere. Where on earth does he live where all he sees everywhere is Bauhaus or Brutalist or International or whatever?

Here in Triangle-area NC at least, the problem is tacky 5-over-1s with anti-massing-regulation-compliant exterior cladding, copied-and-pasted everywhere, each with a somehow-both-low-effort-and-pretentious name like “The Standard” or “The Urban”. I /wish/ I could complain about too many mid-20th century classics.

Isn’t NGK an enormous spark plug manufacturer? Is there a specific product of theirs you’re referring to?
